    Gypsies and the British Imagination, 1807-1930, is the first book to explore fully the British obsession with Gypsies throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth. Deborah Epstein Nord traces various representations of Gypsies in the works of such well-known British authors John Clare, Walter Scott, William Wordsworth, George Eliot, Arthur Conan Doyle, and D. H. Lawrence. Nord also exhumes lesser-known literary, ethnographic, and historical texts, exploring the fascinating histories of nomadic writer George Borrow, the Gypsy Lore Society, Dora Yates, and other rarely examined figures and institutions.Gypsies were both idealized and reviled by Victorian and early-twentieth-century Britons. Associated with primitive desires, lawlessness, cunning, and sexual excess, Gypsies were also objects of antiquarian, literary, and anthropological interest. As Nord demonstrates, British writers and artists drew on Gypsy characters and plots to redefine and reconstruct cultural and racial difference, national and personal identity, and the individual's relationship to social and sexual orthodoxies. Gypsies were long associated with pastoral conventions and, in the nineteenth century, came to stand in for the ancient British past. Using myths of switched babies, Gypsy kidnappings, and the Gypsies' murky origins, authors projected onto Gypsies their own desires to escape convention and their anxieties about the ambiguities of identity. The literary representations that Nord examines have their roots in the interplay between the notion of Gypsies as a separate, often despised race and the psychic or aesthetic desire to dissolve the

    Examining tales of notorious figures in Renaissance England, including the mercenary Thomas Stukeley, the Barbary corsair John Ward, and the wandering adventurers the Sherley brothers, Laurie Ellinghausen sheds new light on the construction of the early modern renegade and its depiction in English prose, poetry, and drama during a period of capitalist expansion. Unlike previous scholarship which has focused heavily on positioning rogue behaviour within the dialogue of race, gender, religion, and nationalism, Pirates, Traitors, and Apostates: Renegade Identities in Early Modern England shows how domestic issues of class and occupation exerted a major influence on representations of renegades, and heightened their appeal to the diverse audiences of early modern England. By looking at renegade tales from this perspective, Ellinghausen reveals a renegade, who, despite being stigmatized as an outsider, becomes a major profiteer during the period of early expansion, and ultimately a key figure in the creation of a national English identity

Nord also exhumes lesser-known literary, ethnographic, and historical texts, exploring the fascinating histories of nomadic writer George Borrow, the Gypsy Lore Society, Dora Yates, and other rarely examined figures and institutions.Gypsies were both idealized and reviled by Victorian and early-twentieth-century Britons. Associated with primitive desires, lawlessness, cunning, and sexual excess, Gypsies were also objects of antiquarian, literary, and anthropological interest. As Nord demonstrates, British writers and artists drew on Gypsy characters and plots to redefine and reconstruct cultural and racial difference, national and personal identity, and the individual's relationship to social and sexual orthodoxies. Gypsies were long associated with pastoral conventions and, in the nineteenth century, came to stand in for the ancient British past. Using myths of switched babies, Gypsy kidnappings, and the Gypsies' murky origins, authors projected onto Gypsies their own desires to escape convention and their anxieties about the ambiguities of identity.     At stake throughout the fictional writings of Marie NDiaye (1967–) is the issue of the stranger’s welcome. NDiaye’s fascination with a spectrum of outsider figures and with the multiple, often subtle practices which create and sustain social groups as bounded entities, gives rise to detailed and disquieting portrayals not of hospitality but of the mechanisms and rituals of repulsion. Engaging with critical theory on hospitality across the disciplines, Shirley Jordan’s closely argued analysis of NDiaye’s novels, theater and short stories probes the tropes of inhospitality around which the writer’s work coalesces, exploring the ethical significance of a corpus in which communities, environments and spaces are persistently tainted by unwelcoming. NDiaye is seen to elaborate a fantastic anthropology: one which, through sustained attentiveness to non-observance of the rules of hospitality, provides a focus for debate about belonging in a postcolonial world.

    Standing outside elite or even middling circles, outsiders who were marginalized by limitations on their freedom and their need to labor for a living had a unique grasp on the profoundly social nature of print and its power to influence public opinion. In Empowering Words, Karen A. Weyler explores how outsiders used ephemeral formats such as broadsides, pamphlets, and newspapers to publish poetry, captivity narratives, formal addresses, and other genres with wide appeal in early America. To gain access to print, outsiders collaborated with amanuenses and editors, inserted their stories into popular genres and cheap media, tapped into existing social and religious networks, and sought sponsors and patrons. They wrote individually, collaboratively, and even corporately, but writing for them was almost always an act of connection. Disparate levels of literacy did not necessarily entail subordination on the part of the lessliterate collaborator. Even the minimally literate and the illiterate understood the potential for print to be life changing, and outsiders shrewdly employed strategies to assert themselves within collaborative dynamics. Empowering Words covers an array of outsiders including artisans; the minimally literate; the poor, indentured, or enslaved; and racial minorities. By focusing not only on New England, the traditional stronghold of early American literacy, but also on southern towns such as Williamsburg and Charleston, Weyler limns a more expansive map of early American authorship.     Verführer, Schurken, Magier: Die Trias des Titels steht prototypisch für historische Personen und fiktive Figuren, die durch Normverletzungen, Regelverstöße, Sittendelikte, Wertemissachtungen, Verhaltensübertretungen oder Moralvergehen aus der gesellschaftlichen Mitte verbannt worden waren, oder die sich selbst von der Gesellschaft abgewandt haben und diese von außerhalb in Frage stellen. Als soziale Außenseiter und Widersacher der Gesellschaft werden diese Personen und Figuren überwiegend negativ dargestellt. Das heißt aber nicht immer, dass sie unter negativen Vorzeichen rezipiert wurden: Denn in ihren Eigenschaften und Verhaltensweisen spiegelt sich oft das Fragwürdige gängiger Normen, Sitten und Bräuche, aber auch die Suche nach Rechtfertigung alter sowie die Begründung neuer ethischer Normen und Werte. Kunst und Literatur haben sich ihrer bedient, um die gesellschaftlicher Praxis zugrunde liegenden verbindlichen sittlichen Normen der jeweils herrschenden Moral und die Begründung von Formen und Prinzipien rechten Handelns zu beweisen oder auch zu verwerfen. Unterschiedliche Zeiten fassen sie durchaus unterschiedlich, ja widersprüchlich auf, und viele von ihnen sind bis heute in Literatur und Kunst, auf der Bühne und im Film lebendig geblieben. Der dritte Band der Reihe "Mittelaltermythen" stellt populäre Leitbilder und Feindbilder, Warnfiguren und Identifikationsfiguren vor, die aus einem mittelalterlichen Verständnis Grenzen überschreiten, Normen in Frage stellen oder neue Werte stiften. So unterschiedliche Verführer wie der Rattenfänger von Hameln oder Don Juan, Verführerinnen wie Dalila oder Dido, Schurken wie Reineke Fuchs oder François Villon, Schälke wie Eulenspiegel oder Markolf, Magier wie Virgilius oder Merlin zeigen Chancen wie Gefährdungen menschlichen Seins und gesellschaftlichen Lebens, machen Eigenschaften und Verhalten, Positionen und Mentalitäten auf prägnante Weise sichtbar und sind vielfach bis heute in Literatur und Kunst, auf der Bühne und im Film lebendig geblieben.

    In The Giant Hero in Medieval Literature Tina Boyer counters the monstrous status of giants by arguing that they are more broadly legible than traditionally believed. Building on an initial analysis of St. Augustine’s City of God , Bernard of Clairvaux’s deliberations on monsters and marvels, and readings in Tomasin von Zerclaere’s Welsche Gast provide insights into the spectrum of antagonistic and heroic roles that giants play in the courtly realm. This approach places the figure of the giant within the cultural and religious confines of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and allows an in-depth analysis of epics and romances through political, social, religious, and gender identities tied to the figure of the giant.
