    Die Popularität der Idee vom kostenlosen und freien Zugang zu wissenschaftlichen Informationen bringt nicht nur das traditionelle System wissenschaftlichen Publizierens in Fachzeitschriften in Bedrängnis. Open Access lässt sich auch kaum mit den traditionellen Rechtfertigungsansätzen zum urheberrechtlichen Schutz vereinbaren. Es verzichtet bewusst auf Teile der durch das Urheberrecht gewährten und der verwertungsrechtlichen Kontrolle dienenden Verbietungsrechte. Sebastian Krujatz untersucht Herkunft sowie Inhalt der Open Access-Idee und geht der Frage nach, welche ökonomische Bedeutung das Urheberrecht für die wissenschaftliche Informationsversorgung hat. Darüber hinaus setzt er sich kritisch mit jüngsten Reformvorschlägen auseinander, welche zum Ziel haben, das Open Access-Prinzip im Urheberrecht zu verankern. (Verlagswerbung)

    Wissenschaftliche Forschung ist auf den Zugang zu bereits existierenden Informationen angewiesen. In der digitalen Welt wird der durch das Urheberrecht gewährte Schutz von Werken mehr und mehr als Hindernis für das wissenschaftliche Arbeiten wahrgenommen. Alexander Lutz untersucht daher die Eignung des geltenden Urheberrechts für Zwecke der Wissenschaft und Forschung. Zunächst analysiert er die Schranken des Urheberrechts und kommt dabei zu dem Ergebnis, dass diese erhebliche Schwächen aufweisen, die sich in der Praxis nachteilig auswirken. Der Autor unterbreitet daher umfassende Reformvorschläge. Darüber hinaus beschäftigt er sich ausführlich mit der Frage, welche Ansatzpunkte das Urheberrecht dafür bietet, die infolge der "Zeitschriftenkrise" faktisch beeinträchtigte Zugänglichkeit von wissenschaftlichen Informationen zu verbessern. Zur Etablierung des "Open-Access" Modells als Lösungsweg plädiert der Verfasser für die Normierung eines zwingenden Zweitveröffentlichungsrechts für den Autor wissenschaftlicher Beiträge.     This Open Access book provides a comprehensive review of the rapidly developing esport phenomenon by examining one of its contemporary flagship titles, Overwatch (Blizzard Entertainment 2016), through three central themes and from a rich variety of research methods and perspectives. As a game with more than 40 million individual players, an annual international World Cup, and a franchised professional league with teams from Canada, China, Europe, South Korea, and the US, Overwatch provides a multifaceted perspective to the cultural, social, and economic topics associated with the development of esports, which has begun to attract attention from both commercial and academic audiences. The book starts with an introduction chapter to Overwatch and esports engagement in general, co-authored by the editors. This is followed by 15 unique chapters from scholars within the field of game cultures and esports, representing ten different nationalities.     In the continuous search for sustainability, the exchange of diverse perspectives, assumptions, and values is indispensable to environmental protection. Through anthropological and ethnographic analyses, this collection addresses how interests, values, and ideologies affect dialogue and sustainability work. Drawing on studies from three continents – Europe, North America, and South America – the paradoxes and the plurality of meanings associated with the creation of sustainable futures are explored. The book focuses on how communication practices collide with organizational frameworks, customary practices, livelihoods, and landscape. In so doing, the authors explore the meanings of environmental communication, pushing beyond environmental advocacy rhetoric to emphasize stronger anthropological engagement within communities to achieve more impactful environmental communication practice. Empirically the book’s chapters explore a diverse set of issues, ranging from coastal management in the European north to Native American place naming in Alaska.     This open access book addresses communicative aspects of the current COVID-19 pandemic as well as the epidemic of misinformation from the perspective of argumentation theory. Argumentation theory is uniquely placed to understand and account for the challenges of public reason as expressed through argumentative discourse. The book thus focuses on the extent to which the forms, norms and functions of public argumentation have changed in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. This question is investigated along the three main research lines of the COST Action project CA 17132: European network for Argumentation and Public PoLicY analysis (APPLY): descriptive, normative, and prescriptive. The volume offers a broad range of contributions which treat argumentative phenomena that are directly related to the changes in public discourse in the wake of the outburst of COVID-19. The volume additionally places particular emphasis on expert argumentation, given (i) the importance expert discourse has had over the last two years, and (ii) the challenges that expert argumentation has faced in the public sphere as a result of scientific uncertainty and widespread misinformation. Contributions are divided into three groups, which (i) examine various features and aspects of public and institutional discourse about the COVID-19 pandemic, (ii) scrutinize the way health policies have been discussed, debated, attacked and defended in the public sphere, and (iii) consider a range of proposals meant to improve the quality of public discourse, and public deliberation in particular, in such a way that concrete proposals for argumentative literacy will be brought to light. Overall, this volume constitutes a timely inquiry into all things argumentative in pandemic discourse. This volume is of interest to a broad readership including philosophers, linguists, communication and legal scholars, and members of the wider public who seek to better understand the discourse surrounding communicative phenomena in times of crisis.     This open access book provides a multi-perspective approach to the caravan trade in the Sahara during the 19th century. Based on travelogues from European travelers, recently found Arab sources, historical maps and results from several expeditions, the book gives an overview of the historical periods of the caravan trade as well as detailed information about the infrastructure which was necessary to establish those trade networks. Included are a variety of unique historical and recent maps as well as remote sensing images of the important trade routes and the corresponding historic oases. To give a deeper understanding of how those trading networks work, aspects such as culturally influenced concepts of spatial orientation are discussed. The book aims to be a useful reference for the caravan trade in the Sahara, that can be recommended both to students and to specialists and researchers in the field of Geography, History and African Studies.

    This open access Pivot book is a comparative study of six early colonial public libraries in nineteenth-century Australia, South Africa, and Southeast Asia. Drawing on networked conceptualisations of empire, transnational frameworks, and ‘new imperial history’ paradigms that privilege imbricated colonial and metropolitan ‘intercultures’, it looks at the neglected role of public libraries in shaping a programme of Anglophone civic education, scientific knowledge creation, and modernisation in the British southern hemisphere. The book’s six chapters analyse institutional models and precedents, reading publics and types, book holdings and catalogues, and regional scientific networks in order to demonstrate the significance of these libraries for the construction of colonial identity, citizenship, and national self-government as well as charting their influence in shaping perceptions of social class, gender, and race. Using primary source material from the recently completed ‘Book Catalogues of the Colonial Southern Hemisphere’ digital archive, the book argues that public libraries played a formative role in colonial public discourse, contributing to broader debates on imperial citizenship and nation-statehood across different geographic, cultural, and linguistic borders.

    This open access book is about exploring interesting borderline cases of art. It discusses the cases of gustatory and olfactory artworks (focusing on food), proprioceptive artworks (dance, martial arts, and rock climbing qua proprioceptive experiences), intellectual artworks (philosophical and scientific theories), as well as the vague limits between painting and photography. The book focuses on the author’s research about what counts as art and what does not, as well as on the nature of these limits. Overall, the author defends a very inclusive view, 'extending' the limits of art, and he argues for its virtues. Some of the limits discussed concern our senses (our different perceptual modalities), some concern vagueness and fuzzy boundaries between different types of works of art, some concern the amount of human intention and intervention in the process of creation of an artwork, and some concern the border between art and science. In these various ways, by understanding better such borderline cases, Benovsky suggests that we get a better grip on an understanding of the nature of art.

    Fifty years of feminist thought have made the idea that women stay at home while men dominate the streets seem outdated; nevertheless, Ceuterick argues that theoretical considerations of gender, space, and power in film theory remain limited by binary models. Looking instead to more fluid models of spatial relations inspired by Sara Ahmed, Rosi Braidotti, and Doreen Massey, this book discovers wilful, affirmative, and imaginative activations of gender on screen. Through close, micro-analysis of historic European Messidor (Alain Tanner, 1979) and contemporary world cinema: Vendredi Soir (Claire Denis, 2002), Wadjda (Haifaa Al-Mansour, 2012), and Head-On (Fatih Akin, 2004), this book identifies affirmative aesthetics: light, texture, rhythm, movement and sound, all of which that participate in a rewriting of bodies and spaces. Ultimately, Ceuterick argues, affirmative aesthetics can challenge the gender categories and power structures that have been thought to determine our habitation of cars, homes, and city streets. Wilful women drive this book forward, through their movement and stillness, imagination and desire, performance and abjection.

    Dieses Open-Access-Buch geht der Zeitreflexion im Feld der Novellistik nach und ergründet Erzählstrategien und -logiken der literarischen Vertextung von ‚Zeit‘, ihre funktionale Einbindung wie auch ihre selbstreflexive und poetologische Gestaltung in Texten. Die Grundlage bildet ein fundiertes, semiotisches Analyseinstrumentarium. Berücksichtigt wird eine breite Textauswahl mit Werken unter anderem von Büchner, Eichendorff, Gutzkow, Hauff, Hebbel, Mundt, Stifter und Tieck. Den historischen Abschnitt zwischen Goethezeit und Realismus kennzeichnet ein Selbstverständnis als Zwischenphase, in der merklich etwas zu Ende geht, ohne dass bereits etwas Neues begonnen hätte. Verankert ist dieser Problemkomplex in einer epocheneigenen Reflexion von Zeit, deren Spezifik in der Verbreiterung des Zukunftshorizontes und dem Auseinanderklaffen von Zukunftsvorstellung und -realisierung liegt. Dabei stellt sich heraus: Die Zukunft als epistemischer Dreh- und Angelpunkt der Zwischenphase ist hochgradig relevant, flexibel und imponderabel.     Uncanny computer-generated animations of splashing waves, billowing smoke clouds, and characters’ flowing hair have become a ubiquitous presence on screens of all types since the 1980s. This Open Access book charts the history of these digital moving images and the software tools that make them. Unpredictable Visual Effects uncovers an institutional and industrial history that saw media industries conducting more private R&D as Cold War federal funding began to wane in the late 1980s. In this context studios and media software companies took concepts used for studying and managing unpredictable systems like markets, weather, and fluids and turned them into tools for animation. Unpredictable Visual Effects theorizes how these animations are part of a paradigm of control evident across society, while at the same time exploring what they can teach us about the relationship between making and knowing.

    In this Open Access book, film scholar Rasmus Greiner develops a theoretical model for the concept of the histosphere to refer to the “sphere” of a cinematically modelled, physically experienceable historical world. His analysis of practices of modelling and perceiving, immersion and empathy, experience and remembering, appropriation and refiguration, combine approaches from film studies, such as Vivian Sobchack’s phenomenology of film experience, with historiographic theories, such as Frank R. Ankersmit’s concept of historical experience. Building on this analysis, Greiner examines the spatial and temporal organization of historical films and presents discussions of mood and atmosphere, body and memory, and genre and historical consciousness. The analysis is based around three historical films, spanning six decades, that depict 1950s Germany: Helmut Käutner’s Sky Without Stars (1955), Jutta Brückner’s Years of Hunger (1980), and Sven Bohse’s three-part TV series Ku’damm 56 (2016).
