    Ein Sohn, der seinen Vater erschlägt, das Rätsel der Sphinx löst, seine Mutter heiratet, seine wahre Identität entdeckt und folglich Selbstblendung vollzieht: Das ist der Kern des Ödipus-Mythos, der schon in der Antike weitverbreitet war und bis in die Moderne fortlebt. Die vorliegende Arbeit leistet eine umfangreiche und gattungsübergreifende Bestandserhebung zu den literarischen Bearbeitungen des Ödipus-Stoffes. Den Schwerpunkt bilden dessen tragische Bearbeitungen bei Aischylos, Sophokles und vor allem Euripides im Spannungsfeld zwischen nachgewiesenen Abhängigkeiten und ausgeprägtem Innovationscharakter. Im Zuge dieser komparatistischen Untersuchung von einzelnen fragmentarisch oder vollständig erhaltenen Texten wird ein Bogen zu den römischen Dichtern Accius und Seneca geschlagen, um aufzuzeigen, in welchem Umfang und in welcher Weise sie auf die genannten griechischen Vorgänger rekurrieren. Insgesamt gelingt es dieser Untersuchung, nicht nur die gattungsinternen Abhängigkeiten der vielfältigen Ödipus-Verarbeitungen, sondern auch den Innovationsanspruch in einer breit angelegten Studie schärfer und systematischer als zuvor zu präsentieren This volume undertakes a comprehensive study of ancient dramatic renditions of the Oedipus theme, from the plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides (the fragments of which are addressed in particular detail) through those of Seneca. In a sharper and more systematic way than ever before, it aims to highlight not only the generic connections between the many versions of the Oedipus story, but also their claims to originality

    Vulnerability is not often associated with virtue. Yet to be vulnerable is central to human experience. In this book, McCoy examines ways in which Greek epic, tragedy, and philosophy have important insights to offer about the nature of human vulnerability and how human beings might better come to terms with their own vulnerability. While studies of Greek heroism and virtue often focus on strength of character, prowess in war, or the achievement of honor for oneself or one’s society, McCoy examines another side to Greek thought that extols the recognition and proper acceptance of vulnerability. McCoy begins with the literary works of Homer’s Iliad, Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colonus and Philoctetes before expanding her analysis to philosophical works. There, she analyzes imagery of wounding in Plato’s Gorgias and Symposium as well as Aristotle’s work on the vulnerability inherent in friendship and an innovative interpretation of tragic catharsis in the Poetics. As much a work of philosophy as of classical textual analysis, McCoy’s work aims at a deeper understanding of the virtues of vulnerability for individuals and societies alike.

    The ancient scholia to Sophocles’ Oedipus at Colonus shed light on Alexandrian ways of engaging with this play, and are richer than those to the other Sophoclean plays. The last editor, Vittorio de Marco (1952), established a better text of these scholia than his predecessors, in as much as he had a fuller knowledge of their manuscript tradition and a better understanding of their stratified nature. Still, his work is marred by a number of inaccuracies, omissions and methodological shortcomings. The new edition by Georgios Xenis improves on de Marco’s work by a careful examination of all the sources of the text and the conjectures proposed by scholars, and by relying on a clearly defined methodological framework. In this edition the scholia to the Oedipus at Colonus are restored in a textual state that is arguably the earliest we can recover, and is free of contradictions, unacceptable repetitions, and hybridisation or blending of elements from different versions. The critical text is accompanied by a detailed apparatus criticus, and is contextualised in its ancient scholarly tradition by means of a rich array of passages drawn from comparable sources. Extensive indices are provided at the end of the volume. The edition will be an invaluable resource for those engaged in the interpretation of Sophocles’ tragedies and, in particular, of the Oedipus at Colonus, and will be of interest to classicists working on ancient literary criticism and ancient scholarship

    Based entirely on archival research, Poets in the Public Sphere traces the emergence of the "New Woman" by examining poetry published by American women in newspapers and magazines between 1800 and 1900. Using sources like the Kentucky Reporter, the Cherokee Phoenix, the Cincinnati Israelite, and the Atlantic Monthly, Bennett is able to track how U.S. women from every race, class, caste, region, and religion exploited the freedom offered by the nation's periodical press, especially the poetry columns, to engage in heated debate with each other and with men over matters of mutual concern. Far from restricting their poems to the domestic and personal, these women addressed a significant array of political issues--abolition, Indian removals, economic and racial injustice, the Civil War, and, not least, their own changing status as civil subjects. Overflowing with a wealth of heretofore untapped information, their poems demonstrate conclusively that "ordinary" nineteenth-century women were far more influenced by the women's rights movement than historians have allowed. In showing how these women turned the sentimental and ideologically saturated conventions of the period's verse to their own ends, Bennett argues passionately and persuasively for poetry's power as cultural and political discourse. As much women's history as literary history, this book invites readers to rethink not only the role that nineteenth-century women played in their own emancipation but the role that poetry plays in cultural life

With two questions--"Who am I?" and "Who is my father?"--on his mind (and on his lips), the obsessed Oedipus arrives at the oracle of Delphi. Unlike the majority of modern and postmodern readings of Oedipus Tyrannus, Efimia Karakantza's text focuses on the question of identity. Identity, however, is not found only in our genealogy; it also encompasses the ways we move in the public space, command respect or fail to do so, and relate to our interlocutors in life. But overwhelmingly, in the Greek polis, one's primary identity is as a citizen, and defining the self in the polis is the kernel of this story. Surveying a wide range of postmodern critical theories, Karakantza follows the steps of the protagonist in the four "cycles of questions" constructed by Sophocles.     "Oedipus, king of Thebes, is one of the giant figures of ancient mythology. Through the centuries, his story has inspired works of epic poetry, lyric poetry, tragedy, opera, a gospel musical and more. The myth has been famously deployed in psychology by Sigmund Freud. It may not be too bold to claim that Oedipus is the name from Greco-Roman mythology best known beyond the academy at the present time, thanks to Freud's famous phrase 'the Oedipus complex'. The most famous version of the Oedipus myth from antiquity is the Greek play by Sophocles. But there is another version, the Latin drama by the Roman philosopher and politician Seneca.Seneca's version is an entirely different treatment from that of Sophocles and reflects concerns special to the author and his Roman audience in the first century AD. Moreover, the play actually exercised a much greater influence on European literature and thought than has usually been suspected. This book offers a compact and incisive study of the multi-faceted Oedipus myth, of Seneca as dramatist, of the distinctive characteristics of Seneca's play and of the most important aspects of the reception of the play in European drama and culture. The scope of the book ranges chronologically from Homer's treatment of Oedipus myth in the Odyssey down to a twenty-first century Senecan treatment by a Lebanese Canadian dramatist.     Riddles played a prominent role in Ancient Greek life in applications such as literature, general education, and cult activities. Examining this diverse genre in all its aspects, this study analyses how and why riddles are told. It also carefully considers the identity and characteristics of riddle tellers as well as their subjects Rätsel gehören seit jeher zum Grundinventar menschlicher Kultur. Ihrer zeitlosen und kulturübergreifenden Omnipräsenz sowie ihrer interdisziplinären Relevanz zum Trotz hat man Rätsel bislang nicht mit dem gebührenden Ernst untersucht. Der antike griechische Kulturkreis, der einen exzeptionellen Reichtum an Gelegenheiten, Funktionen und Spielarten des Rätsels aufweist, ist von diesem Desiderat in besonderer Weise betroffen. Die vorliegende Arbeit erschließt durch die erstmalige Sammlung, inhaltliche Kommentierung und Übersetzung der disparat überlieferten griechischen Rätseltexte eine bisher verkannte literarische Kleinform, deren Erforschung zugleich Einsichten in die verschiedensten kulturellen Bereiche wie Orakelwesen, Magie, Philosophie und Politik mit sich bringt. Die Untersuchung stilistischer, inhaltlicher und formaler Rätselaspekte wird dabei flankiert von Erläuterungen ihrer Verrätselungsmechanismen, sozialen Dimension und unterschiedlichen literarischen und kulturellen Funktionen. Die einzelnen Rätselinterpretationen liefern wegweisende neue Erkenntnisse zu z.T. prominenten Texten des Faches, während der abstraktere Blick auf das Rätsel als solches eine eigene Literaturform und zentrale kulturelle Aspekte neu erschließt
