    A boldly innovative study of nonverbal communication in the poetry and prose of Hellenic antiquityWhen a Gesture Was Expected encourages a deeper appreciation of ancient Greek poetry and prose by showing where a nod of the head or a wave of the hand can complete meaning in epic poetry and in tragedy, comedy, oratory, and in works of history and philosophy. All these works anticipated performing readers, and, as a result, they included prompts, places where a gesture could complete a sentence or amplify or comment on the written words. In this radical and highly accessible book, Alan Boegehold urges all readers to supplement the traditional avenues of classical philology with an awareness of the uses of nonverbal communication in Hellenic antiquity. This additional resource helps to explain some persistently confusing syntaxes and to make translations more accurate. It also imparts a living breath to these immortal texts.Where part of a work appears to be missing, or the syntax is irregular, or the words seem contradictory or perverse—without evidence of copyists' errors or physical damage—an ancient author may have been assuming that a performing reader would make the necessary clarifying gesture. Boegehold offers analyses of many such instances in selected passages ranging from Homer to Aeschylus to Plato. He also presents a review of sources of information about such gestures in antiquity as well as thirty illustrations, some documenting millennia-long continuities in nonverbal communication

    Gesture is integral to human language. Its function within human communication is as much goal-directed, and subsequently as communicative, as is speech. Indeed, gesture and speech share the same cognitive, psychological and physiological roots. Although the study of gesture has reached maturity as a branch of scholarship which endorses a multidisciplinary approach to communication, and is now integral to many of the sciences (psychology, psycholinguistics and ethnology, among others), little attention has been paid in recent years to the phenomena involved - the communicative function of gesture in particular - from a strictly linguistic point of view.This book exploits a number of methodological instruments from the study of linguistics to restore gesture to its original position of importance within the field. The data presented here are analyzed as pieces of information that describe behavior, but which are also an integral part of the more complex phenomenon of human communication. Evidence is provided by means of experiments on hearing and deaf subjects, in addition to a review of the major findings about the use and function of gesture in situations of handicap, such as aphasia and blindness. The ideas proposed here are a result of the author's long study and speculation on the role of gesture, both in communicative acts and with respect to language.     Gestenforscher Krüger geht Geschichte, Bedeutung und heutiger Verwendung des Mittelfingergestus von der griechisch-römischen Antike bis heute nach. Rezension: Yanis Varoufakis, "Effe" Effenberg, Ronald Reagan, Madonna oder Peer Steinbrück: Sie alle hielten schon den ausgestreckten Mittelfinger, vulgo: Stinkefinger in die Kamera. Einer zwischen offener Aggression (Abneigung, Beleidigung) und ironischem Verstoss gegen die üblichen Benimmregeln angesiedelten Geste, die ebenso alt ist wie unsere Kultur. Grund genug für Gestenforscher Krüger, ihre Lexik und Semantik wissenschaftlich dingfest zu machen. Krüger hat den Ursprung des körpersprachlichen Zeichens bereits in der griechisch-römischen Antike ausgemacht; hier galt der "digitus impudicus" (der "schamlose Finger") als obszön-herausfordernde Gebärde von Abwehr, Spott und Hohn, als Indiz für die "Sublimation von atavistischem Primatenverhalten". Der Autor verfolgt akribisch die Geschichte des Mittelfingergestus und besonders seine "Kollektivierung" und "Globalisierung" in der neuesten Zeit durch Leitfiguren aus Musik, Film und Politik sowie Internetkommunikation; auch herabsetzende Gestenvarianten weltweit und juristische Konsequenzen des Stinkefinger-Gestus sind Thema dieses kulturgeschichtlichen Unikats.     Humans produce utterances intentionally. Visible bodily action, or gesture, has long been acknowledged as part of the broader activity of speaking, but it is only recently that the role of gesture during utterance production and comprehension has been the focus of investigation. If we are to understand the role of gesture in communication, we must answer the following questions: Do gestures communicate? Do people produce gestures with an intention to communicate? This Element argues that the answer to both these questions is yes. Gestures are (or can be) communicative in all the ways language is. This Element arrives at this conclusion on the basis that communication involves prediction. Communicators predict the behaviours of themselves and others, and such predictions guide the production and comprehension of utterance. This Element uses evidence from experimental and neuroscientific studies to argue that people produce gestures because doing so improves such predictions.

    Metaphor has recently been reconceptualised as a fundamental part of the human conceptual system. It can hence be expressed in language but also in other modalities and media of communication, including gesture and body language, sound and music, and film and visuals. In spite of this theoretical landslide, however, the wide range of nonverbal metaphor and its processing has neither been empirically investigated on the same scale nor with the same rigour as metaphor in language. The overarching goal of this book is to report on the findings of a research program aimed at exploiting the vast cognitive linguistic and psycholinguistic expertise on metaphor in language for a new, behaviourally founded approach to the structure and processes of metaphor in one of these nonverbal manifestations, namely static visuals. The book presents concepts and methods for the identification and analysis of metaphor in document structure as well as new approaches to the study of visual metaphor processing. Its results are intended to further the development of an encompassing and robust cognitive-scientific theory of metaphor by including visual metaphor while also enriching our understanding of the communicative possibilities and effects of visual metaphor in multimodal discourse
