    Landscape has become an important theme for David Hockney, especially since he returned to his homeland, the Yorkshire Wolds, in the 1990s. The landscapes in this catalgoue show a series of in-depth observations of the changing seasons and the way in which light, space and nature are constantly in motion. They are reminiscent of the landscapes of Vincent van Gogh, including his monumental Wheatfield with Crows and The Harvest. This book pays particular attention to these beautiful landscapes alongside Van Gogh's depiction of nature, with a special focus on technique, perspective and colour, and the way Van Gogh and Hockney use these "formal" elements to create their particular view on the world surrounding them.     The green mantle of the earth! This metaphor conceives of the vegetation of the earth as a green cloth that drapes the barren earth. Long popular in patristic literature Il mantello verde della terra is a poetical image that ponders the providential greening of the earth on the third day of the Creation. Borrowing from the vocabulary of weaving it epitomizes the Renaissance interest in "fashioning green worlds" in art and poetry. Rachel Carson invoked the phrase to draw attention to environmental damage done to earth's "brilliant robe." Here it serves as a motto for a cultural poetics that made "living nature" an object of renewed interest. The essays gathered in this volume explore the expanding technologies and cultural dimensions of verzure and verdancy in the Italian Renaissance, and the role of painting in shaping the poetics and expression of greenery in the visual arts of the 16th-century and after

    Award-winning artist, writer, and naturalist James Prosek (b. 1975) has gained a worldwide following for his deep connection with the natural world, which serves as the basis for his art and numerous popular books. In this cross-disciplinary catalogue, Prosek poses the question, What is art and what is artifact-and to what extent do these distinctions matter? Drawing on the collections of the Yale University Art Gallery and the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, Prosek places man- and nature-made objects on equal footing aesthetically, suggesting that the distinction between them is not as vast as we may believe. In more than 150 full-color plates, objects such as a bird's nest, dinosaur head, and cuneiform tablet are juxtaposed with Asian handscrolls, an African headdress, modern masterpieces, and more. Artists featured include Albrecht Durer, Helen Frankenthaler, Vincent van Gogh, Barbara Hepworth, Pablo Picasso, and Jackson Pollack, as well as Prosek himself, whose works depict fish, birds, and endangered wildlife. Thinking about and relating to the environment – what the Germans call Umwelt , id est, the world that surrounds us – in the way that we do today has a long tradition within modern German culture. German scientists were among the many European explorers that left Europe in the late eighteenth century on voyages of discovery to then unknown parts of the world. For some explorers, discovery meant the fundamental confirmation of their own superiority vis-à-vis primitive peoples and primitive natures; for others it resulted in a shake-up of their belief in the superiority of European civilization in the face of the achievements of other civilizations, or in the face of spectacular nature scenes that outperformed the temperate European landscapes in terms of scale, sublimity, and grandeur. The documents that contain these stories of discovery left an important impression not only on German culture, but on European civilization at large, defining it vis-à-vis other civilizations and other natures. Europe today is the product of these encounters, including the way we conceive of our Umwelt , the environment that surrounds us. The story told in this book is the story of the rise of the modern German environmental imagination with particular emphasis on its narrative and visual components, complementing and expanding Barbara Stafford’s important work in her seminal study of the illustrated travel account from 1984. Chapters on Georg Forster, Alexander von Humboldt, Albert Bierstadt, Leni Riefenstahl, and Werner Herzog unfold the key stages in a process that constitutes the unfolding of the modern German environmental imagination

    Veranstalterinfo: To commemorate the post-renovation reopening of the National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo, we offer an exhibition that traces the development of modern art born out of the dialogue between nature and humankind. The event has been realized in collaboration with the Museum Folkwang in Essen, Germany. Both institutions were founded on private collections: that of Karl Ernst Osthaus [1874-1921] in the one case and Matsukata Kōjirō [1866-1950] in the other. As we can see, these two men were near contemporaries. Earlier in the year, modern artworks from the Matsukata Collection and the Osthaus Collection were brought together for another showing in Germany, Renoir, Monet, Gauguin: Images of a Floating World (6 February-15 May 2022, Museum Folkwang). The present exhibition, In Dialogue with Nature, comprises works collected from the museums' earliest beginnings down to the present day: paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs, spanning from German Romanticism to the art of the twentieth century (with Impressionism and Post-Impressionism at the core). It sets out to explore how sensibility to nature has contributed to the development of artistic expression in the modern era. The transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth centuries was accompanied by rapid modernization in many fields: industry, society, science. Artists, looking at nature with new knowledge and an altered gaze, created a diverse range of works in response to this always fertile source of inspiration. Some leapt from the studio into the light of the open air, attempting to grasp the ephemeral moment; others, in the pursuit of an eternal vision of nature, relied on their own insights or experimented with innovative forms. Certain works chose cycles of nature on which to project human endeavors. Please enjoy the reverberations of these manifold images, hewn out of the infinite expanse of nature, the fruits of two combined collections: everything from the smallest roadside flowers to the vast universe and all humanity contained therein. At a time when the relationship between nature and humankind is undergoing profound reassessment, we sincerely hope the artworks on display may lead visitors to a creative and heartfelt dialogue with the natural world.

    "Across a variegated set of curatorial and editorial instantiations developed by Christine Shaw in 2018/19, the Beaufort Scale of Wind Force becomes a diagram of prediction and premonition in the context of accelerating planetary extinction. The Work of Wind: Air, Land, Sea appropriates the Beaufort Scale of Wind Force as a readymade index for curating a site specific exhibition in the Southdown industrial area of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, and a publication divided into three conjoining volumes. The project is extended by the Society of the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, a public program and broadcast series. While the title might suggest a weather project, it is not about wind but of wind, of the forces of composition and decomposition predicated on the complex entanglements of ecologies of excess, environmental legacies of colonialism, the financialization of nature, contemporary catastrophism, politics of sustainability, climate justice, and resilience."-- Page v
