    Drawing from literary history, social theory, and political critique, this far-reaching study explores the utopian narrative as a medium for understanding the social space of the modern nation-state. Considering the narrative utopia from its earliest manifestation in Thomas More's sixteenth-century work Utopia to some of the most influential utopias of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, this book is an astute study of a literary genre as well as a nuanced dialectical meditation on the history of utopian thinking as a quintessential history of modernity.As he unravels the dialectics at work in the utopian narrative, Wegner gives an ambitious synthetic discussion of theories of modernity, considering and evaluating the ideas of writers such as Ernst Bloch, Louis Marin, Gilles Deleuze, Walter Benjamin, Martin Heidegger, Henri Lefebvre, Paul de Man, Karl Mannheim, Mikhail Bakhtin, Jürgen Habermas, Slavoj Zizek, and Homi Bhabha

    "Worrying the Nation is a critical fretting about the possibility of a national literature in Canada at a time when the very idea of the nation as a viable conceptual/literary category has been called into question." "Jonathan Kertzer stakes out the theoretical ground where three competing discourses (national + literary + history) intersect. He shows how the legacy of Herder and Hegel's romantic historicism both inspired and baffled literary historians in English Canada, who found their fragmentary country unsuited to the romantic model. Kertzer illustrates this difficulty in an analysis of three flawed attempts at poetic nation-buildingOliver Goldsmith's The Rising Village, E.J. Pratt's Towards the Last Spike, and Dennis Lee's Civil Elegies - then shows how disillusionment among more recent critics and writers has led to new models of sociability, as reflected in the novels of Joy Kogawa and Daphne Marlatt. Finally, Kertzer argues that while the nation remains an inevitable category of both political and literary thought, it must be used subtly and self-critically to articulate the 'motley space' of a national life."--Jacket

However, although translation and subjectivity has been thoroughly considered in terms of post-colonialism and post-structuralism, there are few discussions which focus specifically on the construction of "Englishness" through vernacular translation. Using a range of theoretical approaches the five essays in this volume aim to realise such an understanding of translation by critically analyzing the cultural and political implications of translation and the construction of English subjectivities at particular historical moments

"Jonathan Kertzer stakes out the theoretical ground where three competing discourses (national + literary + history) intersect. He shows how the legacy of Herder and Hegel's romantic historicism both inspired and baffled literary historians in English Canada, who found their fragmentary country unsuited to the romantic model. Kertzer illustrates this difficulty in an analysis of three flawed attempts at poetic nation-buildingOliver Goldsmith's The Rising Village, E.J. Pratt's Towards the Last Spike, and Dennis Lee's Civil Elegies - then shows how disillusionment among more recent critics and writers has led to new models of sociability, as reflected in the novels of Joy Kogawa and Daphne Marlatt.     "Nationalism and irony are two of the most significant developments of the Romantic period, yet they have not been linked in depth before now. This study shows how Romantic nationalism in Britain explored irony's potential as a powerful source of civic cohesion. The period's leading conservative voices, self-consciously non-English figures such as Edmund Burke, Walter Scott, and Thomas Carlyle, accentuated rather than disguised the anomalous character of Britain's identity, structure, and history. Their irony publicly fractured while upholding sentimental fictions of national wholeness. Britain's politics of deference, its reverence for tradition, and its celebration of productivity all became not only targets of irony but occasions for its development as a patriotic institution. This study offers a different view of both Romantic irony and Romantic nationalism: irony is examined as an outgrowth of commercial society and as a force that holds together center and periphery, superiors and subordinates, in the culture of nationalism."--BOOK JACKET.

    In recent years the marginal position which has defined translators and their texts has come under increasing and sustained challenge. However, although translation and subjectivity has been thoroughly considered in terms of post-colonialism and post-structuralism, there are few discussions which focus specifically on the construction of "Englishness" through vernacular translation. Using a range of theoretical approaches the five essays in this volume aim to realise such an understanding of translation by critically analyzing the cultural and political implications of translation and the construction of English subjectivities at particular historical moments
