"Brighton, 1862. A day in the life of Sarah, an African girl, adopted by Queen Victoria and raised in the Queen's circles. Today is the eve of her having to return to Africa, but will she go? The Present. A day in the life of Sarah, a black middle-class woman living in a Cheshire village with her husband and small child. They are paid a visit by well-meaning neighbours who have something to confess. The two Sarahs meet Queen Victoria for tea. This won't be your regular tea party... An outrageous play about imperialism, cross-racial adoption, cultural appropriation - and tea - Janice Okoh's The Gift premiered at the Belgrade Theatre Coventry in January 2020, followed by a UK tour, including a run at the Theatre Royal Stratford East in London. It was a co-production between Eclipse Theatre Company and the Belgrade Theatre, and directed by Dawn Walton."

"''We stand on the edge On the threshold of On the entrance to Stepping out from On the cusp...' Set in and around a swimming pool, Chris Bush's play The hanging Room follows a group of teenagers full of excitement, impatience and uncertainty. They know change is coming, but not what it'll look like. Written specifically for young people, The Changing Room was part of the 2018 National Theatre Connections Festival and was premiered by youth theatres across the UK. It offers opportunities for a large, flexible cast of any size or mix of genders, and incorporates chorus work and music. No swimming pool required. This edition of The Changing Room includes the words and music to Chris Bush's original songs, arranged by Matt Winkworth"

"A shocking crime divides the nation. Fingers are pointed, sides are drawn, facts are hard to come by. Why did this happen? How do we move on? What must we remember? It's easy to have an opinion online, safe behind the anonymity of a keyboard, just like, share and subscribe. But as the digital mob polish their pitchforks, the world starts to question just how free should free speech be? A smart, satirical musical by Chris Bush and Matt Winkworth about truth, celebrity and public outrage, The Assassination of Katie Hopkins premiered at Theatr Clwyd, Mold, in April 2018, directed by James Grieve. It went on to win Best Musical Production at the 2018 UK Theatre Awards"

"Dramatism and Musical Theater: Experiments in Rhetorical Performance is an innovative workbook for both students and teachers in advanced communication performance. Meeting at the nexus of English composition, advanced rhetoric, theater, music, and drama, this book utilizes Kenneth Burke's method of dramatism to discover the motives inherent in performances practices, whether they be in the classroom or on the stage. In this book, we take the five corners of the dramatistic pentad: act, scene, agent, agency, and purpose and demonstrate their utilization in performance analysis. We then correlate those performance practices with the production of five contemporary musicals: Little Women, Aida, Street Scene, Into the Woods, and Children of Eden in order to emphasize their use in character, scene, and staging direction. By doing so, we highlight dramatism as a performance practice necessary for effective participation in artistic communities. Dramatism and Musical Theater: Experiments in Rhetorical Performance is also an indispensable guide for teachers and directors to successfully navigate the challenges of collegiate theatrical production"--

"Rhetoric, Politics, and Hamilton: An American Musical approaches Lin-Manuel Miranda's groundbreaking cultural production as a rhetorical text with implications for contemporary U.S. politics. The contributors to this volume utilize training in rhetorical criticism and performance studies to analyze the musical in relation to three broad themes: national public memory, social and cultural identity, and democracy and social change. Each chapter offers unique insights on its own accord while the volume as a whole explores multiple facets of the musical, from the theater performance and the soundtrack to the musical's circulation in public discourse and the Chicago exhibition. The diversity of topics and methods means that the volume is suitable for students of rhetoric and U.S. politics at the same time even the "HamilFans" will learn something new"--

As the first comprehensive academic survey of British musical theatre from its origins to its current state, this volume is a detailed guide to understanding a vibrant form of entertainment 'made in Britain'. It provides both a historical account of musical theatre from 1728 to the present day and a range of in-depth critical analyses of key works and productions that illustrate the aesthetic values and sociocultural meanings of the genre. The twenty-eight essays offer new perspectives on the British musical, conceiving it as a cultural form complementary to the American musical rather than its poor relation, and questioning the cultural bias that views shows initiated in the West End of London as second-rate imitations of classic Broadway models.

When Louise Wolfe's boyfriend mocks and disrespects Native people in front of her, she breaks things off and dumps him over e-mail. She'd rather spend her senior year with her family and friends and working on the school newspaper. The editors pair her up with Joey Kairouz, an ambitious new photojournalist, and in no time the paper's staff find themselves with a major story to cover: the school musical director's inclusive approach to casting The Wizard of Oz has been provoking backlash in their mostly white, middle-class Kansas town. As tensions mount at school, so does a romance between Lou and Joey. But 'dating while Native' can be difficult. In trying to protect her own heart, will Lou break Joey's? -- adapted from jacket "Lou just dumped her first boyfriend for mocking native people. Now the editors of the school newpaper have paired her with Joey, a new photo/video staffer who's had some relationship woes of his own. They soon find themselves tackling Story of the Year: the school musical's director faces parental blacklash over her inclusive approach to casting The Wizard of Oz. Anonymous threats, blackmail, and bullying affects teachers, parents, students, and most of all, cast members--including Lou's little brother. As the conflict heats up, so does a romance between Lou and Joey. But she's Native and he's Lebanese-American, and in their mostly white, middle-class suburb, being the Other can get complicated fast."--Back cover

""Victorians on Broadway" is a wide-ranging interdisciplinary study of live stage musicals from the mid- to late twentieth century adapted from British literature written between 1837 and 1886. Investigating musical dramatizations of works by Charles Dickens, Charlotte Brontë, Christina Rossetti, Robert Louis Stevenson, and others, Weltman considers what cultural and interpretive work adaptations such as "The King and I" (1951), "Oliver!" (1960), "Sweeney Todd" (1979), and "Jekyll and Hyde" (1997) accomplish when they are adapted for the Broadway stage. In addition, Weltman examines what these musicals teach us about the Victorian books from which they derive. "Victorians on Broadway" also provides us with a great deal of background theater history, making sure that we can understand how "the American musical" developed its own generic specificity. The book moves chronologically, reflecting the major developments in American musical theater, and Victorian-sourced Broadway musical adaptations have been produced at each stage: the Golden Age of Broadway, the musical theater experiments of the 1970s and 1980s that focus as much on concept as story (exemplified by Stephen Sondheim), and the era of pop megamusicals, revealing the Broadway musical's debt to melodrama. Organizing these chapters chronologically situates the adaptations within the history of musical theater and focuses attention on how they fit into aesthetic and intellectual movements"--
