    This open access book promotes the idea that all media types are multimodal and that comparing media types, through an intermedial lens, necessarily involves analysing these multimodal traits. The collection includes a series of interconnected articles that illustrate and clarify how the concepts developed in Elleström’s influential article The Modalities of Media: A Model for Understanding Intermedial Relations (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010) can be used for methodical investigation and interpretation of media traits and media interrelations. The authors work with a wide range of old and new media types that are traditionally investigated through limited, media-specific concepts. The publication is a significant contribution to interdisciplinary research, advancing the frontiers of conceptual as well as practical understanding of media interrelations. This is the second of two volumes. It contains a concluding article by Elleström and seven contributions concentrated on the issue of media transformations: how media characteristics are transferred and transfigured among various media products and media types.

    This open access book promotes the idea that all media types are multimodal and that comparing media types, through an intermedial lens, necessarily involves analysing these multimodal traits. The collection includes a series of interconnected articles that illustrate and clarify how the concepts developed in Elleström’s influential article The Modalities of Media: A Model for Understanding Intermedial Relations (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010) can be used for methodical investigation and interpretation of media traits and media interrelations. The authors work with a wide range of old and new media types that are traditionally investigated through limited, media-specific concepts. The publication is a significant contribution to interdisciplinary research, advancing the frontiers of conceptual as well as practical understanding of media interrelations. This is the first of two volumes. It contains Elleström’s revised article and six other contributions focusing especially on media integration: how media products and media types are combined and merged in various ways.

Little attention has been paid to investigating them in multimodal language use. Do gestures exhibit different types of repetitive sequences? Do they build complex units based on these types and if so, how is the pattern building to be described? How is the interrelation of gestural and spoken units in such complex units? Is it possible to identify repetitive patterns that are comparable to spoken and signed languages and/or patterns specific to the gestural modality? Based on a corpus-analysis of multimodal usage-events, 7 chapters explore gestural repetitions with regard to their structure, semantic and syntactic relevance for multimodal utterances, and cognitive saliency. Fine-grained cognitive-linguistic analyses of multimodal usage events reveal that gestural repetitions are not only a basic principle of building patterns in spoken and signed languages, but also in gestures. By addressing questions of mediality and multimodality of language-in-use, the book contributes to the investigation of repetition as a fundamental means of sign and meaning construction (crosscutting modalities) and enhances the understanding of the multimodal character of language in use

    This volume advances the data-based study of multimodal artefacts and performances by showcasing methods and results from the latest endeavors in empirical multimodal research, representing a vibrant international and interdisciplinary research community. The collated chapters identify and seek to inspire novel, mixed-method approaches to investigate meaning-making mechanisms in current communicative artifacts, designs, and contexts; while attending to their immersive, aesthetic, and ideological dimensions. Each contribution details innovative aspects of empirical multimodality research, offering insights into challenges evolving from quantitative approaches, particular corpus work, results from eye-tracking and psychological experiments, and analyses of dynamic interactive experiences. The approaches and results presented foreground the inherent multidisciplinary nature and implications of multimodality, renegotiating concepts across linguistics, media studies, (social) semiotics, game studies, and design. With this, the volume will inform both current and future developments in theory, methods, and transdisciplinary contexts and become a landmark reference for anyone interested in the empirical study of multimodality

    In several scientific fields, like bioinformatics, financial and macro-economics, important theoretical and practical issues exist that involve multimodal data distributions. We propose a Bayesian approach using mixtures distributions to approximate accurately such data distributions. Shape and other features of the mixture approximations are estimated including their uncertainty. For discrete data, we introduce a novel mixture of shifted Poisson distributions with an unknown number of components, which overcomes the equidispersion restriction in the standard Poisson which accomodates a wide range of shapes such as multimodality and long tails. Our simulation-based Bayesian inference treats the density features as random variables and highest credibility regions around features are easily obtained. For discrete data we develop an adapted version of the Reversible Jump Markov Chain Monte Carlo (RJMCMC) method, which allows for an unknown number of components instead of the more restrictive approach of choosing a particular number of mixture components using information criteria. Using simulated data, we show that our approach works successfully for three issues that one encounters during the estimation of mixtures: label switching; mixture complexity and prior information and mode membership versus component membership. The proposed method is applied to three empirical data sets: The count data method yields a novel perspective of the data on DNA tandem repeats in Schaap et al. (2013); the bimodal distribution of payment details of clients obtaining a loan from a financial institution in Spain in 1990 gives insight into the repayment ability of individual clients; and the distribution of the modes of real GDP growth data from the PennWorld Tables and their evolution over time explores possible world-wide economic convergence as well as group convergence between the US and European countries. The results of our descriptive analysis may be used as input for forecasting and policy analysis.

    This study examines the multilingual and multimodal practices employed by conductors and musicians to communicate and interact with each other during rehearsals of French and Italian symphony orchestras. It examines how using different languages and instructive and multimodal actions can contribute to the creation of a social order and reality within the institutional context of the orchestra rehearsal Wie vermittelt der/die Dirigent:in den Musiker:innen in einer Orchesterprobe, was er/sie hören möchte? Diese einfache Frage veranschaulicht grob das, was in der vorliegenden Studie untersucht wird: Die Praktiken, mit denen in einer Orchesterprobe kommuniziert und interagiert wird. Der Fokus der Arbeit liegt auf multimodal realisierten Handlungstypen in Besprechungsphasen in Proben. Es wird danach gefragt, wie Korrekturen und Instruktionen in Orchesterproben gegeben werden, welche Modalitäten dabei zum Einsatz kommen und wie die Musiker:innen musikalisch - aber nicht nur - darauf reagieren. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt der Studie liegt auf dem mehrsprachigen Charakter von Orchesterproben: Es wird erörtert, wann welche Sprache(n) wofür in der Interaktion zwischen Dirigent:in und Musiker:innen eingesetzt wird/werden. Für die Untersuchung von korrektiven, instruktiven und mehrsprachigen Praktiken wird mit einem multimodalen Corpus, d. h. mit Videoaufnahmen von Proben in Frankreich und Italien angesiedelter Symphonieorchester, gearbeitet. Die vorliegende Arbeit zeigt, wie der Einsatz unterschiedlicher Sprachen und instruktiv-multimodaler Handlungen zur Herstellung einer sozialen Ordnung und Realität im institutionellen Kontext der Orchesterprobe beiträgt, d. h. wie ein doing rehearsal zwischen Dirigent:in und Musiker:innen zustande kommt
