"Urban Horror offers a theory of neoliberal post-socialism through an examination of Chinese cinema. According to Erin Huang, neoliberal post-socialism is the economic order that succeeded the end of the Cold War, and describes the attempted articulation of geopolitical and economic relations between formerly socialist and non-socialist countries in what Huang terms the era of the 'post' or 'post-X.' Rather than describing the definitive end of an era, 'post-X' proffers a regressive temporal logic that sutures the present to the past and continuously differs the future. Huang sees the proliferation of terms to describe Chinese economics after the 1978 economic reform policies as the symptoms of a geopolitical order that doesn't yet have a properly articulated name. For Huang, this unarticulated political order is nevertheless felt affectively through what she calls 'urban horror,' and it is best accessed through the cinema of the time period, in which hypermediality-when the meaning of the image no longer depends on an externally existing reality-became popular. Drawing on a definition of horror as a historical mode of perception that occurs when a perceived external reality exceeds one's internal frame of comprehension, Huang argues that the excess of feeling that marks horror's presence allows for an 'elusive sensory communicative channel' in which alternative and dissenting political feelings can emerge. Chapter 1 offers a historical study of the factory in cinema, positioning the images of factory ruins in Chinese cinema as an attempt to reinvent a past that never fully existed. Chapter 2 examines urban horror from a post-socialist feminist perspective by examining the films of Shaohong Li. Chapter 3 focuses on urban horror's development as a product of time in post-socialist Chinese documentary films. Chapter 4 focuses on post-1997 Hong Kong cinema that circulates public sentiments about Hong Kong as a place of political and economic exception. Chapter 5 examines the films of Ming-liang Tsai-and the subject of precarity in Tsai's films-in relation to their display in art museums and performance art spaces. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of Sinophone and East Asian studies, film studies, studies of globalization and neoliberalism, political and social theory, affect studies, feminist studies, and Marxist studies"-

"In September 1941, a handful of isolationist senators set out to tarnish Hollywood for warmongering. The United States was largely divided on the possibility of entering the European War, yet the immigrant moguls in Hollywood were acutely aware of the conditions in Europe. After Kristallnacht (the Night of Broken Glass), the gloves came off. Warner Bros. released the first directly anti-Nazi film in 1939 with Confessions of a Nazi Spy. Other studios followed with such films as The Mortal Storm (MGM), Man Hunt (Fox), The Man I Married (Fox), and The Great Dictator (United Artists). While these films represented a small percentage of Hollywood's output, senators took aim at the Jews in Hollywood who were supposedly "agitating us for war" and launched an investigation that resulted in Senate Resolution 152. The resolution was aimed at both radio and movies that "have been extensively used for propaganda purposes designed to influence the public mind in the direction of participation in the European war." When the Senate approved a subcommittee to investigate the intentions of these films, studio bosses were ready and willing to stand up against the government to defend their beloved industry. What followed was a complete embarrassment of the United States Senate and a large victory for Hollywood as well as freedom of speech. Many works of American film history only skim the surface of the 1941 investigation of Hollywood. In Hollywood Hates Hitler! Jew-Baiting, Anti-Nazism, and the Senate Investigation into Warmongering in Motion Pictures, author Chris Yogerst examines the years leading up to and through the Senate Investigation into Motion Picture War Propaganda, detailing the isolationist senators' relationship with the America First movement. Through his use of primary documents and lengthy congressional records, Yogerst paints a picture of the investigation's daily events both on Capitol Hill and in the national press"--

The concept of "un-Americanism," so vital to the HUAC crusade of the 1940s and 1950s, was resoundingly revived in the emotional rhetoric that followed the September 11th terrorist attacks. Today's political and cultural climate makes it more crucial than ever to come to terms with the consequences of this earlier period of repression and with the contested claims of Americanism that it generated. "Un-American" Hollywood reopens the intense critical debate on the blacklist era and on the aesthetic and political work of the Hollywood Left. In a series of fresh case studies focusing on contexts of production and reception, the contributors offer exciting and original perspectives on the role of progressive politics within a capitalist media industry. Original essays scrutinize the work of individual practitioners, such as Robert Rossen, Joseph Losey, Jules Dassin, and Edward Dmytryk, and examine key films, including The Robe, Christ in Concrete, The House I Live In, The Lawless, The Naked City, The Prowler, Body and Soul, and FTA.

This book tells the story of a generation of writers who were passionately engaged with politics and with cinema, exploring the rise and fall of a distinct tradition of cinematic literature. Dismayed by the rise of fascism in Europe and by the widening gulf separating the classes at home, these writers turned to cinema as a popular and hard-hitting art form. Lara Feigel crosses boundaries between high modernism and social realism and between 'high' and 'popular' culture, bringing together Virginia Woolf with W.H. Auden, Elizabeth Bowen with John Sommerfield, Sergei Eisenstein with Gracie Field

Traces the changing dynamics of criticism and censorship in late socialist Cuba through a focus on cinema. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Cuban state strategically relaxed censorship, attempting to contain dissent by giving it an outlet in the arts. Along with this shift, foreign funding and digital technologies gave filmmakers more freedom to criticize the state than ever before, yet these openings also exacerbated the political paranoia that has long shaped the Cuban public sphere. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, textual analysis, and archival research, Humphreys shows how Cuban filmmakers have historically turned to allegory to communicate an ambivalent relationship to the Revolution, and how such efforts came up against new forms of suspicion in the 1990s and the twenty-first century. Offering insights that extend beyond Cuba, Humphreys reveals what happens to public debate when freedom of expression can no longer be distinguished from complicity while demonstrating the ways in which combining anthropology with film studies can shed light on cinema's broader social and political import.

How have cinema and popular religion shaped each other? Is the display of devotion in the cinema hall the same as devotion in a temple? If cinema has a power to persuade people to believe in the image, to mesmerize or even possess them, how do we understand that compelling power? 0Through engaging with these questions, this book presents a genealogical study of the intersections between cinema, religion and politics in South India. Through a study of Telugu mythological and devotional films, this book combines a history of these genres with an anthropology of film making and viewership practices. In the decades from the 1940s to the 2000s, it examines film texts, as well as methods of film making and publicity, modes of film criticism as well as practices of viewership.0The book draws on film and media theory to foreground the specificity of new technologies and the new kind of publics they create. Anthropological theories of religion, secularism, embodiment and affect are combined with political theories of citizenship to complicate our understanding of the overlapping formations of film spectators, citizens and devotees. It argues that the cinema offers a unique opportunity to explore the affective dimensions of citizenship and the formation of citizen-devotees

"This book provides a long-awaited account of how Marxism has shaped both the medium of film and the study of film. It covers key concepts that anyone studying film needs to engage with, as well as key theorists (both within and beyond film studies) and provides an historical perspective on the development of Marxism and film. Author Mike Wayne argues the need to de-reify how we look at film, link text to context, consciousness to social being, industrial strategies to cultural struggle and assesses new technological, cultural and political trends historically"
