Seine komparatistisch angelegte Studie macht deutlich, welche Bedeutung dem Buchstaben in hermeneutischen und psychoanalytischen Deutungsprozessen, Gedichten und Übersetzungen sowie dem modernen Roman zukommt. Dies zeigt sich nicht nur in der Hermeneutik von Friedrich Schleiermacher bis zu Sigmund Freud, sondern vor allem in der Literatur der Moderne, so bei Friedrich Hölderlin und Paul Celan, aber auch bei Vladimir Nabokov und Thomas Pynchon. Der Raum zwischen Buchstabe und Geist erweist sich hier als ein Ort der Interaktion, an dem das Leben des Geistes nur zum Ausdruck kommt, wenn es den Buchstaben anerkennt und an seinem eigenen Leben partizipieren lässt

    Ausgehend von Henri Lefebvre und Paul Ricoeur entwickelt Julia Kröger eine Raumtheorie, die eine Neubewertung der (Re)Konstruktionen von Paris im Naturalismus Émile Zolas erlaubt. Um den Prozess von der Dokumentation hin zur literarischen Fiktion in seinen unterschiedlichen Stufen nachvollziehen zu können, untersucht sie neben ausgewählten Romanen auch die Arbeitsbücher des Schriftstellers und Journalisten. Dabei wird deutlich, inwiefern in Zolas Darstellungen des Stadtraums schon zahlreiche Aspekte jener urbanen Moderne vorweggenommen wurden, die bisher vor allem Texten und Theorien des 20. This volume relates the current trend of abbreviation to its antecedents, showing that the use of brevity existed long before the digital age. The career of the short form is closely connected to the cultural achievements of the 17th century, and skyrocketed in the run up to the formation of professional media networks in the 19th century. Since then, anecdotes, case studies, brief messages, the 'miscellaneous', headlines, and tidbits from 'around the world' have formed essential elements of the organization and communication of modern forms of knowledge.

Wie Björn Hayer zeigt, ist eine neue Lesart der poetischen Werke von Friedrich Hölderlin, Rainer Maria Rilke und Paul Celan, denen man bislang nicht unbedingt eine optimistische Sicht auf die Moderne bescheinigt hat, im Lichte der Zukunftsgerichtetheit lohnenswert: Zum einen werden darin politische und kulturelle Visionen ersichtlich, die vom Traum einer egalitären Gesellschaft bis hin zu einer die Grenze des Jenseits überschreitenden Erinnerungskultur reichen.     Illustrierte Zeitschriften entwickeln sich ab der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts zu den ersten Massenmedien der Moderne. Willi Wolfgang Barthold erforscht die Wechselwirkung der Literatur des Realismus mit diesem neuen medialen Kommunikationssystem und verbindet dabei Ansätze der Journalliteraturforschung und der Visual Culture Studies. Mit Hilfe einer Untersuchung sowohl kanonisierter als auch bisher kaum berücksichtigter Texte (von Wilhelm Raabe, Theodor Fontane, Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach und Balduin Möllhausen) zeigt er, wie sich der Realismus im intermedialen Spannungsfeld seiner Zeit positioniert und durch ein permanentes Hinterfragen der eigenen Wirklichkeitskonstruktionen ein Reflexionswissen produziert, das zur kritischen Beobachtung der entstehenden Massenmedien beiträgt

Doch wie verhielt sich die deutschsprachige Literatur zum lebensreformerischen Diskurs und zu der in ihm angelegten Vorstellung eines neuen Menschen? Die Beiträger_innen diskutieren die theoretisch-inhaltliche Verarbeitung von Ernährungsreform, Naturheilkunde, Freikörperkultur etc. durch die Autor_innen der Jahrhundertwende. Dabei werden nicht nur bekannte Namen (Rilke, Kafka und Hesse), sondern auch weitgehend unerforschte Schriftsteller wie Heinrich Pudor, Wilhelm Speyer und Wilhelm Schwaner untersucht.     Edmond Jabès was one of the most intriguing Jewish thinkers of the 20th century – a poet for the public and a Kabbalist for those who read his work more closely. This book turns his writings into a ground-breaking philosophical achievement: thinking which is manifestly indebted to the Kabbalah, but in the post-religious and post-Shoah world. Loss, exile, negativity, God’s absence, writing and Jewishness are the main signposts of the negative ontology which this book offers as an interpretation of Jabès’ work. On the basis of it, the book examines the nature of the miraculous encounter between Judaism and philosophy which occurred in the 20th century. Modern Jewish philosophy is a re-constructed tradition which adapts the intellectual and spiritual legacy of Judaism to answer purely modern questions.

    This book shows how vernacular communities commemorate their traumatic experiences of the Second World War. Despite having access to many diverse memory frameworks typical of late modernity, these communities primarily function within religious memory frameworks. The book also traces how they reacted when their local histories were incorporated into the remembrance practices of the state. The authors draw on case studies of four vernacular communities, notably Kałków-Godów, Michniów, Jedwabne and Markowa, to argue that it is still possible in the Polish countryside to discover milieux de mémoire. At the same time, they show that the state not only uses local histories to bolster its moral capital in the international arena, but also in matters of domestic policy.

Jahrhunderts im Bewusstsein der Vielgestaltigkeit aufklärerischer Diskurse zwischen zwei Welten, Europa und Amerika, zu fragen. Gab es eine Aufklärung oder gab es deren viele?     This book examines the transformation of the figure of the stranger in the literature of the modern age in terms of liminality. As a ‘spectral monster’ that has a paradoxical and liminal relationship to both the sacred and the secular, the figure of the modern stranger has played a role in both adapting and shaping a culturally determined understanding of the self and the other. With the advent of modernity, the stranger, the monster, and the spectre became interconnected. Haunting the edges of reason while also being absorbed into ‘normal’ society, all three, together with the cyborg, manifest the vulnerability of an age that is fearful of the return of the repressed. Yet these figures can also become re-appropriated as positive symbols, able to navigate between the dangerous and chaotic elements that threaten society while serving as precarious and ironic symbols of hope or sustainability. The book shows the explanatory potential of focusing on the resacralizing – in a paradoxical and liminal manner – of traditionally sacred concepts such as ‘messianic’ time and the ‘utopian,’ and the conflicts that emerged as a result of secularized modernity’s denial of its own hybridization. This approach to modern literature shows how the modern stranger, a figure that is both paradoxically immersed and removed from society, deals with the dangers of failing to be re-assimilated into mainstream society and is caught in a fixed or permanent state of liminality, a state that can ultimately lead to boredom, alienation, nihilism, and failure. These ‘monstrous’ aspects of liminality can also be rewarding in that traversing difficult and paradoxical avenues they confront both traditional and contemporary viewpoints, enabling new and fresh perspectives suspended between imagination and reality, past and future, nature and artificial. In many ways, the modern stranger as a figure of literature and the cultural imagination has become more complicated and challenging in the (post)modern contemporary age, both clashing with and encompassing people who go beyond simply the psychological or even spiritual inability to blend in and out of society. However, while the stranger may be altering once again the defining or essentializing the figure could result in the creation of other sets of binaries, and thereby dissolve the purpose and productiveness of both strangeness and liminality. The intention of “Monstrous Liminality” is to trace the liminal sphere located between the secular and sacred that has characterized modernity itself. This space has consequently altered the makeup of the stranger from something external, into a figure far more liminal, which is forced to traverse this uncanny space in an attempt to find new meanings for an age that is struggling to maintain any.

    MIXTEC EVANGELICALS is a comparative ethnography of four Mixtec communities in Oaxaca, detailing the process by which economic migration and religious conversion combine to change the social and cultural makeup of predominantly folk-Catholic communities. The book describes the effects on the home communities of the Mixtecs who travel to northern Mexico and the United States in search of wage labor and return having converted from their rural Catholic roots to Evangelical Protestant religions. O’Connor demonstrates the ways that neoliberal policies have forced Mixtecs to migrate and how migration provides the contexts for conversion. Converts challenge the set of customs governing their Mixtec villages by refusing to participate in the Catholic ceremonies and social gatherings that are at the center of traditional village life. Home communities have responded in a number of ways—ranging from expulsion of converts to partial acceptance and adjustments within the village.

    The rise of literary theory spawned the rise of anti-aestheticism, so that even for cultural theorists, discussions concerning aesthetics were often carried out in a critical shorthand that failed to engage with the particularity of the work of art, much less the specificities of aesthetic experience. This book introduces the notion of a new aestheticism - 'new' insofar as it identifies a turn taken by a number of important contemporary thinkers towards the idea that focussing on the specifically aesthetic impact of a work of art or literature has the potential to open radically different ways of thinking about identity, politics and culture. The appearance of a new aestheticism at a moment that is often termed 'post-theoretical' is a direct index of the extent to which, as 'theory' now enters a more reflective phase, there is an increased willingness among critics and philosophers to consider the ways in which literary and cultural theory often overlooked key aspects of its reliance on philosophical aesthetics.     Born into a distinguished aristocratic family of the old Habsburg Empire, Hermynia Zur Mühlen spent much of her childhood and early youth travelling in Europe and North Africa with her diplomat father. Never comfortable with the traditional roles women were expected to play, she broke as a young adult both with her family and, after five years on his estate in the old Czarist Russia, with her German Junker husband, and set out as an independent, free-thinking individual, earning a precarious living as a writer. She translated over 70 books from English, French and Russian into German, notably the novels of Upton Sinclair, which she turned into best-sellers in Germany; produced a series of detective novels under a pseudonym; wrote seven engaging and thought-provoking novels of her own, six of which were translated into English; contributed countless insightful short stories and articles to newspapers and magazines; and, having become a committed socialist, achieved international renown in the 1920s with her Fairy Tales for Workers’ Children, which were widely translated including into Chinese and Japanese. Because of her fervent and outspoken opposition to National Socialism, she and her life-long Jewish partner, Stefan Klein, had to flee first Germany, where they had settled, and then, in 1938, her native Austria. They found refuge in England, where Zur Mühlen died, forgotten and virtually penniless, in 1951.
