This working paper documents an econometric model for detecting turning points in the Danish economy in real time. The model is a mixedfrequency model using both monthly and quarterly data, which can be estimated on an unbalanced panel of data and be updated immediately as data comes through. The model allows the user to provide both a statement about the probability of the Danish economy being in a recession or an expansion as well as in terms of a quantitative estimate of the growth rate on a monthly basis. Further, the model provides a measure of the uncertainty surrounding such a nowcast. The properties of the model are shown and the realtime performance of the model is analysed. It is shown that the model gives correct signals about the activity in the Danish economy, also in real time. The model has been in use in Danmarks Nationalbank since the beginning of 2020, and nowcasts and the uncertainty surrounding this nowcast produced by the model have been published since summer 2020.

We report new regional evidence indicating that U.S. house prices increase persistently in the face of positive shocks to fiscal spending. In sharp contrast with this fact, though, house prices fall in conventional dynamic general equilibrium models where Ricardian households benefit from the flow of housing services. The inconsistency rests on the negative wealth effect exerted by the concurrent increase in the present-value tax burden, which increases the marginal utility of nondurable consumption, even in the presence of mechanisms that produce consumption crowding-in. As housing is a long-lived durable, shocks that do not exert a direct effect on its shadow value - such as those to fiscal spending - inevitably generate negative comovement between households' marginal utility of consumption and house prices. To address this problem, we devise a model combining endogenous entry in a monopolistically competitive sector producing nondurable intermediate goods with a certain degree of taste for variety. This generates increasing returns in aggregate production that induce total factor productivity to increase in the face of a fiscal expansion, thus overcoming the negative wealth effect. As a result, the response of Ricardian households' marginal utility of consumption flips sign, and so the response of house prices. The connection between house prices, business formation and productivity finds strong support in both regional and aggregate data.

Abstract: The article draws attention to the forgotten ancestry of the four steps of comparison model (description – interpretation – juxtaposition – comparison), which is largely attributed to George Z. F. Bereday [1964. Comparative Method in Education. New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston], but which is also, not least among German scholars, attributed to Franz Hilker [1962. Vergleichende Pädagogik. München: Max Hueber]. Who, then, is the rightful author of the model? This article attempts to answer this question. The methodological approaches of the two authors, who knew and referenced each other, will be compared and contextualised in respect to their academic lives and contacts, especially through the 1950s and 1960s. In addition, the epistemological characteristics of the four steps model, including its limitations, and value for the field of Comparative Education are also discussed in the article. (DIPF/Orig.) Comparative Method in Education.

Abstract: Models are ubiquitous in the digital humanities. Against the backdrop of the recent discussion in the philosophy of science about what models are and what they do, this paper presents a semiotic perspective on models in the framework of Charles S. Peirce’s theory of signs that sheds light on the practice of modeling in the digital humanities. As a first step, it is argued that models are icons, i.e. signs that represent their specific objects by being regarded as similar to them; and that there are, in all, three basic types of model, namely “images,” “diagrams,” and “metaphors.” A second step explicates relevant implications of this model-theoretic approach, especially as they relate to the digital humanities. In particular, it is shown that models are not identical to the things they represent and that they only represent them partially; that the representation operates on the basis of a mapping relation between select properties of the model and its object; that each model and e

We build a novel term structure model for pricing synthetic euro area core inflation-linked swaps, a hypothetical swap contract indexed to core inflation. Our approach relies on a term structure model of traded headline inflation-linked swap rates, which we assume span core inflation. The model provides estimates of market-based expectations for core inflation, as well as core inflation risk premia, at daily frequency, whereas core inflation expectations from surveys or macroeconomic projections are typically only available monthly or quarterly. We find that core inflation-linked swap rates are generally less volatile than headline inflationlinked swap rates and that market participants expected core inflation to be substantially more persistent than headline inflation following the 2022 energy price spike. Using an event-study methodology, we also find that monetary policy shocks significantly lower core inflation expectations.
