This collection of essays considers the extra-literary and extra-textual methods by which vernacular forms and genres were obtained and examines the roles that performance and orality play in the reception and dissemination of those genres, arguing that late medieval vernacular forms can be used to delineate the interests and perspectives of the subaltern. Via an interdisciplinary approach, contributors use theories of multimodality, translation, manuscript studies, sound studies, gender studies, and activist New Formalism to address how and for whom popular, vernacular medieval forms were made

Muteness and Disembodied Difference: Three Case Studies This collection examines the intersection of the discourses of “disability” and “monstrosity” in a timely and necessary intervention in the scholarly fields of Disability Studies and Monster Studies. Analyzing Medieval and Early Modern art and literature replete with images of non-normative bodies, these essays consider the pernicious history of defining people with distinctly non-normative bodies or non-normative cognition as monsters. In many cases throughout Western history, a figure marked by what Rosemarie Garland-Thomson has termed “the extraordinary body” is labeled a “monster.” This volume explores the origins of this conflation, examines the problems and possibilities inherent in it, and casts both disability and monstrosity in light of emergent, empowering discourses of posthumanism

Epilogue: Between Je me plaing and Iste ego sum This book offers analyses of texts from medieval France influenced by Ovid’s myth of Narcissus including the Lay of Narcissus, Alain de Lille’s Plaint of Nature, René d’Anjou’s Love-Smitten Heart, Chrétien de Troyes’s Story of the Grail and Guillaume de Machaut’s Fountain of Love. Together, these texts form a corpus exploring human selfhood as wounded and undone by desire. Emerging in the twelfth century in Western Europe, this discourse of the wounded self has survived with ever-increasing importance, informing contemporary methods of theoretical inquiry into mourning, melancholy, trauma and testimony. Taking its cue from the moment Narcissus bruises himself upon learning he cannot receive the love he wants from his reflection, this book argues that the construct of the wounded self emphasizes fantasy over reality, and that only through the world of the imagination—of literature itself—can our narcissistic injuries seemingly be healed and desire fulfilled

    Dieser Band enthält grundsätzliche Überlegungen und textbezogene Fallstudien zu poetologischen Potenzialen von Widersprüchen und Verwandtem in deutschen und europäischen Erzähltexten vom 12. bis zum 17. Jahrhundert. Untersucht werden Akte der Widerrede und Phänomene der Unvereinbarkeit, widersprüchliche Konzeptualisierungen und narratologische Brüche, epistemologische Bedingungen der Wahrnehmung von Widersprüchlichkeit, Aspekte einer Poetologie des Widerspruchs als Mittel der Sinnkomplexion. Der Inhalt Unter dem Leitaspekt der Möglichkeiten einer Poetik des Widerspruchs werden Texte unterschiedlicher Gattungen analysiert, insbesondere mittelhochdeutsche Heldenepik (Nibelungenlied, Eckenlied), deutsche Chansons de geste (Rolandslied, Wolframs von Eschenbach Willehalm), höfische Legende (Hartmanns von Aue Gregorius), höfische Romane (von Eilharts von Oberg Tristrant über Hartmanns Artusromane und Wolframs Parzival bis zum späthöfischen Roman), Verserzählungen (Mauricius von Crâûn, Helmbrecht), Mystik (Mechthild von Magdeburg), frühneuzeitliche Prosaromane (u. a. Georg Wickram, Johann Fischart, Faust- und Wagnerbuch); einbezogen sind auch Beiträge zur französischen Artusliteratur und zu Miguel de Cervantes’ Quijote. Die Zielgruppen Angesprochen werden sollen Mediävist*innen verschiedener Disziplinen und narratologisch interessierte Literaturwissenschaftler*innen.     This book is open access under a CC-BY 4.0 license. This book examines social and medical responses to the disfigured face in early medieval Europe, arguing that the study of head and facial injuries can offer a new contribution to the history of early medieval medicine and culture, as well as exploring the language of violence and social interactions. Despite the prevalence of warfare and conflict in early medieval society, and a veritable industry of medieval historians studying it, there has in fact been very little attention paid to the subject of head wounds and facial damage in the course of war and/or punitive justice. The impact of acquired disfigurement —for the individual, and for her or his family and community—is barely registered, and only recently has there been any attempt to explore the question of how damaged tissue and bone might be treated medically or surgically. In the wake of new work on disability and the emotions in the medieval period, this study documents how acquired disfigurement is recorded across different geographical and chronological contexts in the period.

Analyzing Medieval and Early Modern art and literature replete with images of non-normative bodies, these essays consider the pernicious history of defining people with distinctly non-normative bodies or non-normative cognition as monsters. In many cases throughout Western history, a figure marked by what Rosemarie Garland-Thomson has termed “the extraordinary body” is labeled a “monster.” This volume explores the origins of this conflation, examines the problems and possibilities inherent in it, and casts both disability and monstrosity in light of emergent, empowering discourses of posthumanism

This collection of essays considers the extra-literary and extra-textual methods by which vernacular forms and genres were obtained and examines the roles that performance and orality play in the reception and dissemination of those genres, arguing that late medieval vernacular forms can be used to delineate the interests and perspectives of the subaltern. Florian Nieser zeigt in diesem Buch den interpretatorischen Mehrwert von uneindeutigen Zeichen auf, die Irritationen und Ambivalenzen produzieren. Ausgehend vom Blickwinkel eines ‚informierten‘ zeitgenössischen Rezipienten des Willehalm und der Bataille d’Aliscans werden die zentralen Figuren Willehalm/Guillelme und Rennewart/Rainouart als ‚wandelnde Zeichenkomplexe‘ gelesen. (A-)semiotische und machtkommunikative Handlungsdimensionen gewinnen zusammen mit der äußeren Codierung der Figuren an Deutungsgewicht und stellen deren Lesbarkeit ins Zentrum der Analysen. Dieser Ansatz ermöglicht eine eindeutige Lesart der hybriden Rennewartfigur und erlaubt es, vermeintlich widersprüchliche Taten Willehalms in neue Sinnzusammenhänge zu überführen.     This book offers analyses of texts from medieval France influenced by Ovid’s myth of Narcissus including the Lay of Narcissus, Alain de Lille’s Plaint of Nature, René d’Anjou’s Love-Smitten Heart, Chrétien de Troyes’s Story of the Grail and Guillaume de Machaut’s Fountain of Love. Together, these texts form a corpus exploring human selfhood as wounded and undone by desire. Emerging in the twelfth century in Western Europe, this discourse of the wounded self has survived with ever-increasing importance, informing contemporary methods of theoretical inquiry into mourning, melancholy, trauma and testimony. Taking its cue from the moment Narcissus bruises himself upon learning he cannot receive the love he wants from his reflection, this book argues that the construct of the wounded self emphasizes fantasy over reality, and that only through the world of the imagination—of literature itself—can our narcissistic injuries seemingly be healed and desire fulfilled.

    This essay collection studies the Apocalypse and the end of the world, as these themes occupied the minds of biblical scholars, theologians, and ordinary people in Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and Early Modernity. It opens with an innovative series of studies on "Gendering the Apocalypse," devoted to the texts and contexts of the apocalyptic through the lens of gender. A second section of essays studies the more traditional problem of "Apocalyptic Theory and Exegesis," with a focus on authors such as Augustine of Hippo and Joachim of Fiore. A final series of essays extends the thematic scope to "The Eschaton in Political, Liturgical, and Literary Contexts." In these essays, scholars of history, theology, and literature create a dialogue that considers how fear of the end of the world, among the most pervasive emotions in human experience, underlies a great part of Western cultural production.

    Notker III. Labeo oder der Deutsche, Lehrer im St. Galler Benediktinerstift († 1022), hat mehrere lateinische Schultexte, darunter auch die Consolatio Philosophiae (CPh) des Boethius ins Spätalthochdeutsche übersetzt und auch größtenteils in seiner Muttersprache erklärt (= Nb). Für seine Übertragung und Exegese hat er zahlreiche und verschiedenartige, vor allem lateinische Quellen benutzt. Mit diesem ersten der Parallelbände 1A, 2A und 3A zu den Nb-Textbänden 1, 2 und 3 unserer Ausgabe (ATB 94, 100, 101) lege ich interessierten Germanisten, Mediävisten und Liebhabern der CPh des Boethius die Resultate langjähriger Quellenforschungen in Gestalt eines Stellenkommentars (Notker latinus) zu Nb vor. Dieser Kommentar folgt wiederum dem Text von Nb, d.h. der Leithandschrift St. Gallen 825, nach Seiten und Zeilen.- Vorher geht zunächst ein ausführliches Abkürzungs-, Siglen- und Literaturverzeichnis, dann folgt eine umfassende Einleitung, in der die Quellen und die Grundsätze dieses Kommentars vorgestellt und auch v.a. Entscheidungen zu Quellenfragen begründet und gelegentlich verteidigt werden. Der eigentliche Text des Kommentars wird wiederum auf 3 Bände (parallel zu den Textbänden von Buch I/II, Buch III und Buch IV/V der CPh verteilt. Am Ende des 3. Bandes findet eine Reihe von Nachträgen und Berichtigungen zu Nb ihren Platz. Ein Band, der Nachträge und Berichtigungen zu den anderen Bänden unseres Notker-Unternehmens sowie einige Register und Hinweise auf wichtige neuere Notker-Forschung und Forschungsliteratur enthalten wird, ist geplant. Eine der Hauptleistungen Notkers ist die Kunst, mit der er den oft schwierigen und spröden CPh-Text in sein Spätalthochdeutsch übertragen hat.- Bei der Quellensuche habe ich daher - weit mehr als meine Vorgänger - auf Nuancen und Feinheiten der Wiedergabe geachtet und auf fast alles, das dabei von Belang sein kann, hingewiesen. Auf diese Weise stellt dieser Notker latinus auch eine Fundgrube für die Lexikographie des Althochdeutschen sowie generell für die Lexikologie dar
