"In seventeenth-century Britain every debate about loyalty oaths invoked the biblical Samson. Samson's Cords argues that these loyalty tests became an unprecedentedly pervasive feature of life in Restoration England and that writers of satire and epic had no choice but to respond. Alex Garganigo examines the radically different responses of John Milton, Andrew Marvell, and Samuel Butler to the existential crises caused by this explosion of loyalty oaths. After early support, all three developed serious reservations, confronting the irony that while oaths often exclude and destroy, they also include and create. Tackling issues such as performance, ritual, religion, secularization, gender, swearing, republicanism, and citizenship, Garganigo offers original readings of Paradise Lost, Samson Agonistes, An Horatian Ode upon Cromwell's Return from Ireland, The Rehearsal Transpros'd, and Hudibras."-- Cover; Copyright; Contents; Illustrations; Preface; Acknowledgments; Introduction: Samson's Cords in Restoration England; 1 Conjuring Oaths and Identities in Hudibras; 2 Testing the Tests in The Rehearsal Transpros'd; 3 An Horatian Oath: The Horatian Ode, Secularism, and Toleration; 4 Samson's Cords: Imposing Oaths in Eikonoklastes and Samson Agonistes; 5 Paradise Lost I: God's Swearing By Himself: Milton's Troubling Coronation Oath; 6 Paradise Lost II: Of Apples, Oaths, and Women; Appendix: A Proposal for Emending One of Marvell's Letters; Notes; Bibliography; Index

Andrew Marvell, Sexual Orientation, and Seventeenth-Century Poetry examines the important Interregnum/Restoration poet Andrew Marvell against a background of his contemporary lyric poets. His major works from the early elegies to the later political pieces are discussed with a view to unmasking the poet’s own sexuality and his reflection of prevailing sexual attitudes. Popular poems like the Mower poems and “The Nymph Complaining for the Death of her Fawn” are explicated in depth as well as lesser known poems like “The Unfortunate Lover” and “The Gallery.” Marvell, often described as a “chameleon” has teased readers for hundreds of years. This new book will help both new readers as well as established Marvellians to understand cryptic sexual meanings and references in the verses. Poems are explicated against current heteronormative theory as well as recent work on homoeroticism, autoeroticism, and celibacy. George Klawitter has devoted much of his recent scholarly life to a study of Marvell’s lyric pieces and brings to this new book fresh insights into the suggestive intent of the poet’s works.

"This book, by the pre-eminent historian of Cromwellian England, offers a fresh approach to the political lives of the two great poets of the Puritan Revolution, John Milton and Andrew Marvell. Blair Worden shows how differently their writing reads when its involvement in epochal events is historically reconstructed. We trace the responses of the two men to the execution of King Charles I; to the experience, unique in English history, of republican government; to the failure of that experiment; and to the rule of Oliver Cromwell, whose ascent, at the expense of king and parliament alike, inspired ambivalent sentiment in Milton and Marvell. Both authors underwent intensely felt changes of allegiance between the regicide and the Restoration. First we follow Marvell's gradual and painful transition from royalism to Cromwellianism. Then we examine Milton's entry into politics under the Commonwealth and the revisions of his perspective that followed it. We watch his difficult and disillusioning relationships with the successive regimes of the Interregnum, and view his engagement, in immortal poetry, with the collapse of Puritan rule. Our third author is Marvell's and Milton's common literary partner, and their colleague in government service at Whitehall, the political thinker and pioneering journalist Marchamont Nedham, whose writing shares and illuminates the preoccupation of the two more famous writers with the debates and dilemmas of that volatile era."--Jacket
