Tolkien's life -- Works by J.R.R. Tolkien -- Bibliography -- About the editor -- Contributors -- Index. This volume opens with an introductory essay by Franco Manni, an Italian scholar who brings an international perspective to his attempt to explain why the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien--especially his masterwork The Lord of the Rings--is so appealing to so many people. The fact that Manni is not a native speaker of English is even more intriguing because it reflects the larger fact that Tolkien is beloved throughout the world, not just in Anglophone nations. What are the reasons for his broad and enduring popularity? Manni cites fifteen distinct factors to explain why Tolkien's works in general, and The Lord of the Rings in particular, have won such widespread affection and respect. He also compares and contrasts Tolkien's writings with other aspects of contemporary culture that he finds far less appealing. This volume, like all Critical Insights collections, concludes with several features designed to put at readers' disposal various useful lists of information. These include a chronology of Tolkien's life, a listing of his works in various genre, and a detailed secondary bibliography. The volume ends with a biography of the editor, biographies of the contributors, and a comprehensive index of names, places, characters, and other matters treated in this book. (Publisher)

Chapter 1: Introduction -- Chapter 2: Tolkien as a Stylist: Key Words and Key Collocations -- Chapter 3: The Narrative Syntax of The Lord of the Rings -- Chapter 4: Points of View -- Chapter 5: Landscape Descriptions -- Chapter 6: Speeches and Declarations -- Chapter 7: Storytelling -- Chapter 8: Poems and Songs -- Chapter 9: Language and Character -- Chapter 10: Tolkiens Position in Literary History. This book takes a fresh look at Tolkiens literary artistry from the points of view of both linguistics and literary history, with the aim of shedding light on the literary techniques used in The Lord of the Rings. The authors study Tolkiens use of words, style, narrative techniques, rhetoric and symbolism to highlight his status as literary artist. Dirk Siepmann uses a corpus stylistic approach to analyse Tolkiens vocabulary and syntax, while Thomas Kullmann uses discourse theory, literary history and concepts of intertextuality to explore Tolkiens literary techniques, relating them to the history of English fiction and poetry. Issues discussed include point of view, speeches, story-telling, landscape descriptions, the poems inserted into the body of the narrative, and the role of language in the characterization of the novels protagonists. This book will be of particular interest to students and scholars of literature, corpus linguistics and stylistics, as well as Tolkien fans and specialists. Thomas Kullmann is Professor of English Literature at the University of Osnabruck, Germany. He has published widely on Shakespeare and the English Renaissance, English childrens literature and the nineteenth- and twentieth-century novel. Dirk Siepmann is Professor of English as a Second Language at the University of Osnabruck, Germany. He has 25 years of experience in applied linguistics, with an extensive background in corpus linguistics and language teaching. He has authored 12 books, including two major monographs on translation studies and one on contrastive linguistics, and has co-authored or edited a further 14 volumes

"J.R.R. Tolkien is an author beloved by many, but people forget that he has encountered hostile reception from several literary critics, who despised (and some who continue to despise) him and his readers. Other intellectuals and critics have a more positive opinion of his work, but some read aspects of his books or his beliefs to fit their own agendas. Over the decades, scholars have claimed that Tolkien represents a myriad of (sometimes contradictory) political positions. Whether these scholars act out of disdain for Tolkien or from a simple misread of his works, the outcome is a muddled distortion of who Tolkien really was. This book peels back the discourse in an attempt to reveal the true nature of an author who so often defies categorization. Using all possible nuance, chapters explore the villains of Lord of the Rings, its female heroines and its moral compass, as well as its definitions of heroism and failure. This book hopes to provide a uniquely accurate and objective assessment of one of the most misunderstood writers of our time"--

"Why do lovers of J.R.R. Tolkien's LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy return to it again and again through their lives? Why does each rereading seem more nourishing? FRODO'S WOUND is a collection of essays that approaches these questions from various angles. It argues that while epic conflict and heroic warriors may provide the initial allure to the book, what lingers and deepens with each reading is its emotional complexity, its knowledge of loss and grief, and its yearning for something only dimly understood. Uniquely, it is a study of Tolkien that barely mentions Christianity and assumes no broad knowledge of the mythological world of Middle-earth. Instead, the book offers a series of close readings that reveal Tolkien's subtlety and sensitivity, and does not shy away from probing the significance of his occasional clumsiness. FRODO'S WOUND shows why Tolkien is a great writer, and why THE LORD OF THE RINGS is really a book for older adults--indeed, for anyone who has ever lost their way" --

(Publisher)
