    "Interpretive understanding of human behaviour, known as verstehen, underpins the divide between the social sciences and the natural sciences. Taking a historically orientated approach, this collection offers a fresh take on the development of understanding within analytic philosophy before, during and after logical empiricism. In doing so, it reinvigorates debates on the role of the social sciences within contemporary epistemology. Bringing together leading experts including Martin Kusch, Thomas Uebel, Karsten Stueber and Giuseppina D'Oro, it is an authoritative reference on the logical empiricists' philosophy of social science. Charting the various reformulations of verstehen as proposed by Wilhem Dilthey, Max Weber, R.G Collingwood and Peter Winch, the volume explores the reception of the social sciences prior to logical empiricism, before surveying the positive and negative critiques from Otto Neurath, Felix Kaufmann, Viktor Kraft and other logical empiricists. As such, chapters reveal that verstehen was not altogether rejected by the Vienna Circle, but was subject to various conceptual uses and misuses. Along with systematic historical coverage, the book situates verhesten within contemporary interdisciplinary developments in the field, shedding light on the 21st-century 'turn' to understanding among analytic philosophers and opening further lines of inquiry for philosophy of social science"--

    Chaïm Perelman, alone, and in collaboration with Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca, developed the New Rhetoric Project (NRP), which is in use throughout the world. Sir Brian Vickers, in his historical survey of rhetoric and philosophy for the Oxford Encyclopaedia of Rhetoric, states that the NRP is "one of the most influential modern formulations of rhetorical theory." This book provides the first deep contextualization of the project's origins, offers seven original translations of the writings of Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca from French into English, and details how their collaboration effectively addresses then philosophical problems of our age.

    'Fictions of Fact and Value' argues that the philosophy of logical positivism, considered the antithesis of literary postmodernism, exerts a determining influence on the development of American fiction in the three decades following 1945 in what amounts to a constitutive encounter between literature and philosophy at mid-century: after the end of the modernism, as it was traditionally conceived, but prior to the rise of postmodernism, as it came to be known.

    Mit der ‚künstlichen Intelligenz‘ verbinden sich hochfliegende Erwartungen. Dies hängt damit zusammen, dass sie nicht als eingegrenzte Technik auftritt, sondern in alle Bereiche des gesellschaftlich-operativen Geschehens (Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft, Produktion, Technologie, Verwaltung, Bildung etc.) eindringt bzw. hier katalysatorische Wirkungen erzielt. In dem Maße, wie sie dabei generative und direktive Funktionen übernimmt, wird die Frage sein, was ihr unter Intelligenz- wie auch unter Verantwortungsgesichtspunkten zuzutrauen ist. D.h. das Gesamtprojekt ist daraufhin zu beleuchten, ob und wieweit die hoch entwickelten Programme sich den sinnbestimmten Dimensionen menschlichen Denkens und Handelns nähern und inwieweit sie sich unterscheiden. Überlegungen dieser Art leiten über zu philosophischen Fragen, wie die, wodurch die geistigen Operationen des Menschen für sich einen Bedeutungsgehalt beanspruchen und aus welchen Einbettungen heraus Geist, Bewusstsein und Sinn entsteht. High expectations are associated with 'artificial intelligence'. This is due to the fact that it does not appear as a limited technology but penetrates all areas of social and operational activity (science, business, production, technology, administration, education, etc.) or achieves catalysing effects there. To the extent that it takes on generative and directive functions, the question will be what it can be expected to achieve in terms of intelligence and responsibility. In other words, the overall project must be examined to determine whether and to what extent the highly developed programmes approach the meaningful dimensions of human thought and action and to what extent they differ. Considerations of this kind lead to philosophical questions, such as how human mental operations claim meaningful content for themselves and from which forms of embedding spirit, consciousness and meaning arise.
