This book shows how vernacular communities commemorate their traumatic experiences of the Second World War. Despite having access to many diverse memory frameworks typical of late modernity, these communities primarily function within religious memory frameworks. The book also traces how they reacted when their local histories were incorporated into the remembrance practices of the state. The authors draw on case studies of four vernacular communities, notably Kałków-Godów, Michniów, Jedwabne and Markowa, to argue that it is still possible in the Polish countryside to discover milieux de mémoire. At the same time, they show that the state not only uses local histories to bolster its moral capital in the international arena, but also in matters of domestic policy.

In this paper, I examine the relationship between housing prices and transport improvements in case of tunnel in a locality in an extremely remote area of Iceland - a village far north called Siglufjörður. It have been documented that transportation improvements tend to influence housing prices, due to the general consumer preference for access over amenity value. I will examine whether this relationship holds in case of cul de sac in an extremely remote community in Iceland. A macro panel data set from Iceland will be used. It provides several essential variables for 79 municipalities in Iceland from 1981 through 2006. The results suggest that the impact is negligible against housing prices in this case. Further inspection shows that the price is sticky in the most relevant region, but the quantity is flexible. Thus, the estimation of the model will be repeated as an inverse demand function, where the housing price as exogene variable is replaced by sales quantity.

The story of Jael is interpreted in many different ways; the two main ones are that she is a hero to Israel, or she is a deceitful murderer. An incident that occurred in the Cape Flats, South Africa, some years ago throws light on local women’s interpretation of the Jael story. In the contemporary incident, a woman killed her son, but was viewed by women in the community not as a murderer but as a fellow-sufferer. In this study, women in the community and women in prison (some for murder) read the Jael text, act out the story, and share their views of what was happening in the biblical text. It is clear that contemporary women living in a violent community can contribute to a better understanding of the Jael text through their many parallel experiences.
