    "After an unfortunate event on the streets of Boston in 1976, resulting in a head injury to an angry man while working with a 35mm camera, the American artist Mike Smith traded in his Leica for a Linhof Press 23 camera, and moved away from spontaneous street photography to a more intimate portraits. He would go on to produce a detailed record of the inhabitants of Boston's streets in an inclusive, non-judgmental, and yet direct approach. Smith worked with a large camera with an even larger flat unit, a formidable machine that got peoples attention and held it long enough for him to complete the related tasks to operate it successfully.     "Virginia Wilcox's debut monograph - consisting of photographs made in the large Los Angeles parks that are equally hardscrabble and breathtaking - is quite aptly titled Arboreal. Because they have so many irreconcilable demands placed on them by both civilization and climate, the dominant subjects of the artist's vision seem more "tree-like" or "relating to trees" than they do the actual thing. We can't help but admire their stoic resolve. The pictures, Wilcox says, "offer a winding journey through a mangled urban landscape that looks something like wilderness, towing the line between the natural and built environment." The word "arboreal" of course is also used of animals who live partly or entirely in trees, and we see here how the human animal has used and overused these spaces: alterations to the topography, infrastructural incursions, plain old trash. But Arboreal is no simple environmental diatribe. Rather, it is a clear-headed finding of complicated meaning that is necessarily as ambiguous as its subject. The singular strength of the book lies in the high-wire tension that Wilcox has created between the encroachments on the land and its sheer stubborn beauty - all juxtaposed against the sprawling city below and surrounding. Wrapping everything in that sort of light only known in Southern California, she somehow offers us photographs that are simultaneously as plainly understood as evidence and as thrillingly complex as the mind of the maker. For me, the fake foliage of the trees draws more attention than camouflage. The often-farcical tower disguises belie the equipment's covert ability to collect all the phone calls and digital information passing through them, to be bought and sold by advertisers and stored by the government. From the very start, cell towers were considered eyesores. Plastic leaves were attached in an attempt to hide the visual pollution. Over time, the disguises evolved from primitive palms and evergreens into more elaborate costumes. The towers now masquerade as flagpoles, crosses, water towers, and cacti. Today, as our demand for five bars of connectivity continues to increase, the charade still persists. I was initially drawn to the towers' whimsical appearances. The more I photographed, the more disconcerted I felt that technology was clandestinely modifying our environment. I explore how this manufactured nature is imposing a contrived aesthetic in our neighborhoods. My photographs expose the towers' idiosyncratic disguises, highlight the variety of forms, and show how ubiquitous they are in our daily lives. Their appearance is now an inescapable part of the iconic western road trip and the eight states that I visited for this project. As the fifth generation (5G) of cellular technology continues to roll out, the cell tower terrain will be changing. 5G utilizes smaller equipment that is easier to hide - think fat streetlight poles. Perhaps elaborately disguised "fauxliage" towers will start disappearing and be considered an anachronism of the early 21st century. Robert Frank (1924-2019) drove coast to coast, photographing the highways, bars, and people that formed the basis for his widely admired publication The Americans (1958). Todd Webb (1905-2000) walked across the country, searching for 'vanishing Americana and what is taking its place.' Unaware of each other's work, the photographers produced strikingly similar images of the highway, parades, and dim, smoky barrooms.     Ponts, gares routes, aqueducs, viaducs, sont étudiés et photographiés depuis la création du service de l'Inventaire d'Île-de-France. Ce nouvel opus de la collection Ré-Inventaire est l'occasion d'un voyage poétique à travers 40 ans de photographie. Sans déroger au style documentaire qui est la marque de l'écriture photographique de l'Inventaire général, les photographes de l'Inventaire se sont inspirés des travaux des grands maîtres de la photographie comme Lartigue ou Rusha, pour rendre compte de l'expérience du mouvement, de la vitesse, et du gigantisme de ces infrastructures. Leurs travaux présentés dans ce livre, montrent la beauté brutale de ces architectures.

The devastation was enormous, destroying many homes. Lebanon's government subsequently fell, causing political instability. The ensuing economic and administrative crisis is still ongoing. Although the blast gradually disappeared from the news, it continued to feel extremely close for Hans Wilschut. This book is his attempt to make tangible the paralysis that remained in the city.     Faisant suite au deux précédents ouvrages THE WHAT THE FUCK! et WHAT THE MEGA FUCK! aux éditions Le Monte-en-l’air en 2020, ce 3ème opus de la collection WTF! réunit des photographies en provenance du monde entier, collectées au fil de pérégrinations sur la Toile. Sur les réseaux sociaux et les sites Internet dont sont issues ces photographies, l’acronyme "WTF" précède souvent un contenu pour signifier l’effarement qu’il provoque. Cette interjection exprime autant l’incompréhension que le malaise du "voyeur" face à ces images. Leur accumulation souligne la course folle au partage de contenus "extra-ordinaires" pour un public anesthésié et pose la question de la dilution du sens de la photographie à l’aube du XXIème siècle. Ces images incongrues sont vues par des millions d’internautes à un instant T, mais disparaissent définitivement au bout de quelques semaines. Éditer ces images dématérialisées en les réunissant dans des ouvrages imprimés, revient à s’approprier ces clichés et à poser un acte de résistance face à la course à l’infini du Web

    Doucement, le public des salles obscures délaisse le cinéma pour se prélasser chez lui devant les multiples plateformes payantes, moins chères qu’une place de cinéma : les gens ont modifié leurs habitudes… Le cinéma ne fait plus rêver. Les salles ont perdu de leur splendeur, souvent réfugiées en périphérie, entre quelques chaines d’alimentation, elles ont presque honte d’exister. Pourtant, ce fabuleux patrimoine de lieux voués au septième art existe encore un peu, surtout en France, un des très rares pays où l’on construit aussi encore des cinémas à l’architecture parfois audacieuse et où l’on refuse la mort du cinéma en salle avec véhémence. Parfois, au détour d’une rue, une façade flamboyante oubliée nous rappelle sa splendeur passée et, surtout, que le cinéma est immortel. Que ce soit à la recherche de salles historiques décaties ou même abandonnées, de salles anciennes rénovées avec amour ou de salles contemporaines spectaculaires, pendant plus de 10 ans, dans les villes et les campagnes, Simon Edelstein a écumé les routes de France à la rencontre de ce patrimoine exceptionnel

    C'est d'abord pour leur caractère surprenant que Philippe Artières a voulu publier ces photographies d'un 'sosie' de Michel Foucault, mort en 1984, dont l'oeuvre irrigue son propre travail. Réalisées en 2020 durant le premier confinement, elles rendent irrévérencieusement hommage à un philosophe qui s'intéressa aux processus de 'subjectivisation' et aux corps comme objets historiques. Historien, directeur de recherches au CNRS, Philippe Artières est, entre autres, l'auteur de D'après Foucault. (Seuil, 2012), avec Mathieu Potte-Bonneville, et Le Dossier sauvage (Verticales, 2019), récit fictionnel inspiré du travail de Foucault. Au Point du Jour, il a publié, avec Mathieu Pernot, L'Asile des photographies (Prix Nadar 2013) Pierre Artières-Glissant est censé être l’auteur des photographies ici exposées, mais c’est un artefact, un simulacre, sorte de chimère composée des identités de Pierre Rivière (sur qui écrivit Foucault), de Philippe Artières, et du philosophe de la Relation, Edouard Glissant
