"In his introduction to the foundational 1925 text The New Negro, Alain Locke described the 'Old Negro' as 'a creature of moral debate and historical controversy,' necessitating a metamorphosis into a literary art that embraced modernism and left sentimentalism behind. This was the underlying theoretical background that contributed to the flowering of African American culture and art that would come to be called the Harlem Renaissance. While the popular period has received much scholarly attention, the significance of editors and editing in the Harlem Renaissance remains woefully understudied. Editing the Harlem Renaissance foregrounds an in-depth, exhaustive approach to relevant editing and editorial issues, exploring not only those figures of the Harlem Renaissance who edited in professional capacities, but also those authors who employed editorial practices during the writing process and those texts that have been discovered and/or edited by others in the decades following the Harlem Renaissance. Editing the Harlem Renaissance considers developmental editing, textual self-fashioning, textual editing, documentary editing, and bibliography. Chapters utilize methodologies of authorial intention, copy-text, manuscript transcription, critical edition building, and anthology creation. Together, these chapters provide readers with a new way of viewing the artistic production of one of the United States' most important literary movements"--Amazon

"Twentieth-Century American Fiction in Circulation is a study of the twentieth-century linked story collection in the United States. It emphasizes how the fictional form grew out of an established publishing model-individual stories printed in magazines, revised and expanded into single-author volumes that resemble novels-which creates multiple contexts for the reception of this literature. By acknowledging the prior appearance of stories in periodicals, the book examines textual variants and the role of editorial emendation, drawing on archival records (drafts and correspondence) whenever possible. It also considers how the pages of magazines create a context for the reception of short stories that differs significantly from that of the single-author book. The chapters explore how short stories, appearing separately then linked together, excel at representing the discontinuity of modern American life; convey the multifaceted identity of a character across episodes; mimic the qualities of oral storytelling; and illustrate struggles of belonging within and across communities. The book explains the appearance and prevalence of these narrative strategies at particular cultural moments in the evolution of the American magazine, examining a range of periodicals such as The Masses, Saturday Evening Post, Partisan Review, Esquire, and Ladies' Home Journal. The primary linked story collections studied are Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio (1919), William Faulkner's The Unvanquished (1938), Mary McCarthy's The Company She Keeps (1942), John Barth's Lost in the Funhouse (1968), and Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club (1988)"--

"This book unearths archival evidence to describe a collaborative, consumer-oriented modernism that developed out of both planned and fortuitous groupings in periodicals. These periodicals-whether mass-market journals or literary magazines-adjust our perceptions of authors elsewhere known to be "in charge" and reveal the central role that compromise and chance played in the emergence of modernism. Tracing the serialization and advertisement of four key texts: Henry James's The Turn of the Screw in Collier's (1898), Rudyard Kipling's Kim in McClure's and Cassell's (1900-1901), James Joyce's Ulysses in the Little Review (1918-1920), and Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway in Bond Street in The Dial (1923). Research at multiple archives unearths the forgotten story behind the texts we think we know so well. This study pieces together original records of journals' advertising strategies, previously unpublished editorial correspondence and memoranda, and long-buried letters from a wide range of repositories."
