With technical advice from several physicians, the authors present the first medical case history of the poet. Drawing heavily upon the Correspondence for information about Pope’s symptoms, they discuss the effect ill health had on his writings and the prevalence of medical themes in his works. The authors also explore Pope’s interests in astronomy (second only to his obsession with medicine), microscopy, geology, and physics and how they relate to his writings.Originally published in 1968.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.     Upon its publication in 1871, Charles Darwin's The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex sent shock waves through the scientific community and the public at large. In an original and persuasive study, Bert Bender demonstrates that it is this treatise on sexual selection, rather than any of Darwin's earlier works on evolution, that provoked the most immediate and vigorous response from American fiction writers. These authors embraced and incorporated Darwin's theories, insights, and language, creating an increasingly dark and violent view of sexual love in American realist literature.In The Descent of Love, Bender carefully rereads the works of William Dean Howells, Henry James, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, Sarah Orne Jewett, Kate Chopin, Harold Frederic, Charles W. Chesnutt, Edith Wharton, and Ernest Hemingway, teasing from them a startling but utterly convincing preoccupation with questions of sexual selection. Competing for readership as novelists who best grasped the "real" nature of human love, these writers also participated in a heated social debate over racial and sexual differences and the nature of sex itself. Influenced more by The Descent of Man than by the Origin of Species, Bender's novelists built upon Darwin's anthropological and zoological materials to anatomize their character's courtship behavior, returning consistently to concerns with physical beauty, natural dominance, and the power to select a mate.Bringing the resources of the history of science and intellectual history to this, the first full-length study of the impact of Darwin's theories in American literature, Bender revises accepted views of social Darwinism, American literary realism, and modernism in American literature, forever changing our perceptions of courtship and sexual interaction in American fiction from 1871 to 1926 and beyond.

    Der Band analysiert das Verhältnis von Literatur und Wissen ausgehend von einer Auffassung von Literatur, die diese nicht als zu erkennenden Gegenstand oder zu definierendes Objekt, sondern als ihrerseits Theorie und Wissen produzierende Rede betrachtet, welche sich immer schon im Austausch mit anderen Feldern des Wissens befindet. Angesichts des spezifischen epistemologischen Status ihres »Gegenstandes« ist Literaturwissenschaft zu unablässiger Selbstreflexion aufgefordert. »Literatur und Wissen« wird hier als Formel für eine theoretische und methodische Unruhe verstanden - als eine Praxis des konsequenten In-Frage-Stellens des Gegenstandsbereiches, der Verfahren, Darstellungsweisen und Situierung von Literaturwissenschaft. Anhand literarischer Texte und anderer medialer Inszenierungen unternehmen die Beiträge des Bandes je singuläre Grenzgänge zwischen Literatur und Wissen. Sie behandeln Themen wie Intellektualität, Entortung von Sprache, theatralische Rede, Inszenierungsformate, Institutionalisierungen von Wissen, Dialoge und Dialogizität, Wunder und Macht sowie Text-Bild-Verhältnisse - und in allen geht es um das Wissen von und der Literatur. »Weiterlesen« insistiert dabei auf Konstellationen, Verschiebungen, Unterbrechungen, Fortsetzungen der Lektüre, die weniger auf das Finden einer neuen Stelle aus sind als auf die nochmalige Lektüre derselben, die eben damit nicht mehr dieselbe wäre. Es ist dies ein rhythmisiertes, von Literatur affiziertes Lektüreverfahren, wie es Marianne Schuller in ihren Arbeiten entwickelt hat. Der Band ist ihr als Festschrift gewidmet.

    Mit dem Leitthema »Wissen in Literatur« sind nicht die durch Literatur vermittelten und bewahrten Kommunikationen über kulturelle Gegebenheiten und Normen gemeint, die das Alltagshandeln anleiten oder dieses Verhalten reflektieren; gemeint ist vielmehr das in den Einzelwissenschaften seit dem 17. Jahrhundert produzierte (oder dort abgewiesene) >neue Wissen< über die Natur und den Menschen, das eine Änderung der humanen und sozialen Selbstdeutungen bewirkt. In der Folge entstehen konkurrierende Natur- und Darstellungskonzepte sowie neue Formen der poetischen Durchdringung des Wissens, die auf die Literatur und die Wissenschaften gleichermaßen zurückwirken. The theme of this volume, 'knowledge in literature', refers not to the way in which literature communicates cultural phenomena, events, and norms regulating or reflecting everyday action and behaviour. Instead, it focuses on the 'new knowledge' about nature and the human animal produced (or rejected) in individual branches of science and learning since the 17th century and the changes it has effected in human and social self-interpretation. The consequence of this has been a spate of rival concepts of nature and representation and new forms of literary penetration and appropriation of knowledge that display repercussions both on literature itself and on science, philosophy and the humanities.

    The Enlightenment commitment to reason naturally gave rise to a belief in the perfectibility of man. Influenced by John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, many eighteenth-century writers argued that the proper education and upbringing¿breeding¿could make any man a member of the cultural elite. Yet even in this egalitarian environment, the concept of breeding remained tied to theories of blood lineage, caste distinction, and biological difference. Turning to the works of Locke, Rousseau, Swift, Defoe, and other giants of the British Enlightenment, Jenny Davidson revives the debates that raged over the husbandry of human nature and highlights their critical impact on the development of eugenics, the emergence of fears about biological determinism, and the history of the language itself. Combining rich historical research with a keen sense of story, she links explanations for the physical resemblance between parents and children to larger arguments about culture and society and shows how the threads of this compelling conversation reveal the character of a century.     The Enlightenment commitment to reason naturally gave rise to a belief in the perfectibility of man. Influenced by John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, many eighteenth-century writers argued that the proper education and upbringing¿breeding¿could make any man a member of the cultural elite. Yet even in this egalitarian environment, the concept of breeding remained tied to theories of blood lineage, caste distinction, and biological difference. Turning to the works of Locke, Rousseau, Swift, Defoe, and other giants of the British Enlightenment, Jenny Davidson revives the debates that raged over the husbandry of human nature and highlights their critical impact on the development of eugenics, the emergence of fears about biological determinism, and the history of the language itself. Combining rich historical research with a keen sense of story, she links explanations for the physical resemblance between parents and children to larger arguments about culture and society and shows how the threads of this compelling conversation reveal the character of a century. A remarkable intellectual history, Breeding not only recasts the fundamental concerns of the Enlightenment but also uncovers the seeds of thought that bloomed into contemporary notions of human perfectibility.

    Par la puissance métaphorique et la force de modélisation qu'ils revêtent, les savoirs biologiques et leurs représentations suscitent au XIXe siècle la fascination des écrivains. Ceux-ci y trouvent la source d'une nouvelle poésie, d'un imaginaire dépassant la logique positiviste, mais aussi des formes textuelles nouvelles, une poétique, voire une esthétique permettant de redéfinir l'idée du " beau ". Le présent volume étudie l'impact des savoirs biologiques sur la création littéraire du XIXe siècle, en se donnant trois objectifs : (1) étudier la diffusion et la réception des savoirs biologiques par les écrivains du XIXe siècle, en prêtant une attention particulière aux travaux étrangers majeurs en la matière ; (2) analyser l'usage et les fonctions des savoirs biologiques dans les textes littéraires, leurs transformations sur le plan du contenu, de l'écriture et de la poétique, ce qui présuppose aussi l'identification des enjeux idéologiques de ces savoirs ; (3) penser les rapports ou les décalages entre l'histoire des sciences et l'histoire de la littérature, qui tantôt rend compte de débats d'actualité, tantôt au contraire s'inscrit dans des savoirs plus anciens.

    New scientific theories, methods, and objectives exert subtle and often unnoticed influences on literary creation. The developments of the attitudes and aspirations of French scientists between the Renaissance and the Revolution and the impact of these new outlooks on French literature form the theme of this book by an authority in the interdisciplinary treatment of science and literature. Implicit in the author's exploration is the view that in the development of the scientific revolution there was no overall design, but rather random growth; human beings turn up at various moments, some of them appropriately, some of them not, so that the record is in part a story of successful endeavour, in part a comedy little short of farce. in the historical panorama of this book, four auhors, each known for his ironic, even comic, insight into the human condition, are chosen to illustrate the theme. As men of letters, Rabelais and Voltaire exhibit well-defined scientific interests, while Pascal and Maupertuis were drawn from their scientific vocations into the discussion of ideas in literary forms. Consideration of their similarities and differences suggested the title, Science and the Human Comedy. This work is a valuable contribution to our understanding of the historical and cultural conditions accompanying the advancement of science in a critical period, as well as of several ways in which the process was reflected, sometimes directly, more often indirectly, in literature.     Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit den neuesten Entwicklungen im Verhältnis von Literatur und Naturwissenschaft. Im ersten Teil findet eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit den science wars und besonders mit dem Thema >Rhetorik der Naturwissenschaften< statt. Dabei werden jenseits der bestehenden Konflikte Möglichkeiten für eine produktive Interdisziplinarität ausgelotet. Im zweiten Teil werden neuere Positionen zur literarischen Verarbeitung naturwissenschaftlicher Themen und zu kulturellen Interdependenzen kritisch beleuchtet. Es folgen Untersuchungen von literarischen Texten, in denen sich eine souveräne und kreative Bearbeitung naturwissenschaftlicher Konzepte feststellen läßt. This study is concerned with the latest developments in the relationship between literature and the natural sciences. The first part revolves around a critical engagement with the 'science wars', and notably with the subject of 'rhetoric in the natural sciences'. Here an attempt is made to fathom the potential for productive interdisciplinary endeavour above and beyond the existing conflicts. Part Two casts a critical eye on recent positions in connection with the literary processing of scientific subjects and cultural interdependencies. This is followed by studies of literary texts in which a well-informed and creative approach to scientific concepts is discernible.     Mit dem Leitthema »Wissen in Literatur« sind nicht die durch Literatur vermittelten und bewahrten Kommunikationen über kulturelle Gegebenheiten und Normen gemeint, die das Alltagshandeln anleiten oder dieses Verhalten reflektieren; gemeint ist vielmehr das in den Einzelwissenschaften seit dem 17. Jahrhundert produzierte (oder dort abgewiesene) >neue Wissen< über die Natur und den Menschen, das eine Änderung der humanen und sozialen Selbstdeutungen bewirkt. In der Folge entstehen konkurrierende Natur- und Darstellungskonzepte sowie neue Formen der poetischen Durchdringung des Wissens, die auf die Literatur und die Wissenschaften gleichermaßen zurückwirken. The theme of this volume, 'knowledge in literature', refers not to the way in which literature communicates cultural phenomena, events, and norms regulating or reflecting everyday action and behaviour. Instead, it focuses on the 'new knowledge' about nature and the human animal produced (or rejected) in individual branches of science and learning since the 17th century and the changes it has effected in human and social self-interpretation. The consequence of this has been a spate of rival concepts of nature and representation and new forms of literary penetration and appropriation of knowledge that display repercussions both on literature itself and on science, philosophy and the humanities.
