Interdisciplinary Measures makes the case for a cross-disciplinary, but literature-centred, approach to postcolonial studies. Despite the anxieties that interdisciplinarity brings with it, a combination of different, discontinuously structured disciplinary knowledges is arguably best suited to address the tangled concerns of both the globalised present and the colonial past. The book looks specifically at the intersections between literary criticism, history, anthropology, geography and environmental studies, while arguing more specifically for a postcolonialism across the disciplines in the service of informed (cross-) cultural critique. Bringing together a wide range of literary material from Africa, Australia, Canada, the Caribbean, New Zealand and South Asia, the book also considers the different, but sometimes related, cultural contexts within which the key debates in postcolonial studies – e.g. those around globalisation, North-South relations and the new imperialism – are currently taking place. These debates suggest the need for a multi-sited, multilinguistic and, not least, multidisciplinary approach to postcolonial studies that consolidates its status as a comparative field Decolonizing the map : postcolonialism, poststructuralism, and the cartographic connection -- Unsettled settlers : postcolonialism, travelling theory, and the new migrant aesthetics -- Postcolonial geography, travel writing, and the myth of wild Africa -- "Greening" postcolonialism : ecocritical perspectives -- Anthropologists and other frauds -- African literature and the anthropological exotic -- (Post)colonialism, anthropology, and the magic of mimesis -- Maps, dreams, and the presentation of ethnographic narrative -- Philomela's retold story : silence, music, and the postcolonial text -- Ghost stories, bone flutes, cannibal counter-memory -- Cultural memory in postcolonial fiction : the uses and abuses of Ned Kelly -- (Not) reading Orientalism

Latin American Literature at the Millennium analyzes literary constructions of locality from the early 1990s to the mid-2010s. In this astute study, Raynor reads work by Roberto Bolaño, Valeria Luiselli, Luiz Ruffato, Bernardo Carvalho, João Gilberto Noll, and Wilson Bueno to reveal representations of the human experience that unsettle conventionally understood links between locality and geographical place. The book raises vital considerations for understanding the region's transition into the twenty-first century, and for evaluating Latin American authors' representations of everyday place and modes of belonging. It further examines relevant theory on globalization and historical context, discussing the political and economic forces at work in Latin America's engagement with global processes. Across chapters, Raynor traces localizing techniques in canonical works as well as understudied and peripheral texts, deftly exploring the "local" as a plural concept constructed through language, memory, and attachment to place

Why is our world still understood through binary oppositions—East and West, local and global, common and strange—that ought to have crumbled with the Berlin Wall? What might literary responses to the events that ushered in our era of globalization tell us about the rhetorical and historical underpinnings of these dichotomies? In A Common Strangeness, Jacob Edmond exemplifies a new, multilingual and multilateral approach to literary and cultural studies. He begins with the entrance of China into multinational capitalism and the appearance of the Parisian flâneur in the writings of a Chinese poet exiled in Auckland, New Zealand. Moving among poetic examples in Russian, Chinese, and English, he then traces a series of encounters shaped by economic and geopolitical events from the Cultural Revolution, perestroika, and the June 4 massacre to the collapse of the Soviet Union, September 11, and the invasion of Iraq. In these encounters, Edmond tracks a shared concern with strangeness through which poets contested old binary oppositions as they reemerged in new, post-Cold War forms

The small town has become a national icon that circulates widely in literature, culture, and politics as an authentic American space and community. Yet there are surprisingly few critical studies that analyze the small town’s centrality to the United States’ identity and imagination. In Main Street and Empire, Ryan Poll addresses this need, arguing that the small town, as evoked by the image of "Main Street," is not a relic of the past but rather a metaphorical screen upon which America’s "everyday" stories and subjects are projected on both a national and global scale. Bringing together a broad selection of texts—from Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, Grace Metalious’s Peyton Place, and Peter Weir’s The Truman Show to the speeches of William McKinley, Ronald Reagan, Sarah Palin, and Barack Obama—Poll examines how the small town is used to imagine and reproduce the nation throughout the twentieth- and into the twenty-first century. He contends that the dominant small town, despite its innocent, nostalgic appearance, is central to the development of the U.S. empire and global capitalism

Ideas, culture, and capital flow across national borders with unprecedented speed, but we tend not to think of poems as taking part in globalization. Jahan Ramazani shows that poetry has much to contribute to understanding literature in an extra-national frame. Indeed, the globality of poetry, he argues, stands to energize the transnational turn in the humanities. Poetry in a Global Age builds on Ramazani’s award-winning A Transnational Poetics, a book that had a catalytic effect on literary studies. Ramazani broadens his lens to discuss modern and contemporary poems not only in relation to world literature, war, and questions of orientalism but also in light of current debates over ecocriticism, translation studies, tourism, and cultural geography. He offers brilliant readings of postcolonial poets like Agha Shahid Ali, Lorna Goodison, and Daljit Nagra, as well as canonical modernists such as W. B. Yeats, Wallace Stevens, T. S. Eliot, and Marianne Moore. Ramazani shows that even when poetry seems locally rooted, its long memory of forms and words, its connections across centuries, continents, and languages, make it a powerful imaginative resource for a global age. This book makes a strong case for poetry in the future development of world literature and global studies.

Mapping world literature -- Worlding world literature -- Why world literature now? -- Major/minor in world literature -- Major and minor players in world literature -- Victor Klemperer saves Europe through Weltliteratur -- Brussels as transnational node for world literature -- Larger than Holland : J. Slauerhoff and world literature -- Adventures of Mark Twain in world literature -- Caribbean exile into world literature -- Anglo-phone literature as global literature -- Re-orient -- Wither European literature? "If you want to know how globalisation affects literary studies today this is the book for you. Why has world literature become so hotly debated? How does it affect the study of national literatures? What does geopolitics have to do with literature? Does American academe still set an example for the rest of the world? Is China taking over? What about European literature? Europe's literatures? Do "minor" European literatures get lost in the shuffle? How can authors from such literatures get noticed? Who gains and who loses in an age of world literature? If those are questions that bewilder you look no further - this book provides answers and leaves you fully equipped to dig deeper into the fascinating world of world literature in an age of geopolitics"

This book provides a history of the way in which literature not only reflects, but actively shapes processes of globalization and our notions of global phenomena. It takes in a broad sweep of history, from antiquity, through to the era of imperialism and on to the present day. Whilst its primary focus is our own historical conjuncture, it looks at how earlier periods have shaped this by tracking key concepts that are imbricated with the concept of globalization, from translation, to empire, to pandemics and environmental collapse. Drawing on these older themes and concerns, it then traces the germ of the relation between global phenomena and literary studies into the 20th and 21st centuries, exploring key issues and frames of study such as contemporary slavery, the digital, world literature and the Anthropocene
