Pop culture opens avenues for people to declare their participation in a collective project and helps them to shape their understandings of civic responsibility, leadership, communal history, and present concerns.Politics in the Gutters: American Politicians and Elections in Comic Book Media opens with an examination of campaign comic books used by the likes of Herbert Hoover and Harry S. Truman, follows the rise of political counterculture comix of the 1960s, and continues on to the graphic novel version of the 9/11 Report and the cottage industry of Sarah Palin comics. It ends with a consideration of comparisons to Donald Trump as a supervillain and a look at comics connections to the pandemic and protests that marked the 2020 election year. More than just escapist entertainment, comics offer a popular yet complicated vision of the American political tableau. Politics in the Gutters considers the political myths, moments, and mimeses, in comic books-from nonfiction to science fiction, superhero to supernatural, serious to satirical, golden age to present day-to consider how they represent, re-present, underpin, and/or undermine ideas and ideals about American electoral politics.

    Die kritische Beschäftigung und Auseinandersetzung mit der Literatur, insbesondere der Science-fiction-Literatur, der Futurologie und Philosophie, hat von Anfang an die schriftstellerischen Arbeiten Stanislaw Lems begleitet. Aus der Fülle seiner kritischen Essays, die verstreut in Zeitschriften, Almanachen und Zeitungen erschienen sind, sammelt dieser Band die wichtigsten. Unter ihnen sind Beiträge wie Das Antimärchen des Marquis de Sade, Lolita oder Stawrogin und Beatrice und auch eine Arbeit über außersinnliche Phänomene. Zum anderen werden eine Reihe von Vor- oder Nachworten zu Büchern mit in den Band aufgenommen.- Amüsant diskutierte Lem in einem Beitrag in der Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung einmal das Phänomen des literarischen Kitsches und der Verantwortlichkeit des Schriftstellers.Scharfsinnig setzt er sich mit einem Ausspruch des amerikanischen Science-fiction-Autors Roul Anderson auseinander, der seinen Kollegen den Rat gegeben hatte, sie müßten als Science-fiction-Autoren um das Biergeld des Lesers wetteifern, sonst würde er die nächste Eckkneipe aufsuchen und auf das Lesen verzichten: 'Hätten sich die Autoren aller Zeiten den Ratschlag zu Herzen genommen, gäbe es keine Literatur, die über die Schriftstellerei einer Courths-Mahler hinausragt. Achteten die Autoren stets auf ihre Verleger, Wächter, Zensoren, Leser, die öffentliche Meinung, die Auflagenhöhe usw., gäbe es nicht die geringste Aussicht für das Zustandekommen der Werke, auf die wir stolz sind.- Also ist der Rat, den man den fürsorglichen Worten Andersons entgegensetzen sollte, einfach: man darf die Verkäuflichkeit, das 'Marketing', die amtliche Wohlgefälligkeit und alle ähnlichen Dinge in den winzigen Raum zwischen dem Auge des Schriftstellers und dem noch unbeschriebenen Blatt Papier nicht eindringen lassen. Daß die Musen beim Bier und auch bei anderen Gelegenheiten, die weniger angenehm als das Biertrinken sind, schweigen, unterliegt keinem Zweifel. Die Aufgabe der Literatur kann also niemals in der Anpassung an die geltenden äußeren Umstände liegen; eine solche Anpassung wäre ihr Tod.'

    Following the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the globalization of Cuban culture, along with the bankruptcy of the state, partly modified the terms of intellectual engagement. However, no significant change took place at the political level. In Community and Culture in Post-Soviet Cuba, De Ferrari looks into the extraordinary survival of the Revolution by focusing on the personal, political and aesthetic social pacts that determined the configuration of the socialist state. Through close critical readings of a representative set of contemporary Cuban novels and works of visual art, this book argues that ethics and gender, rather than ideology, account for the intellectuals’ fidelity to the Revolution. Community and Culture does three things: it demonstrates that masculine sociality is the key to understanding the longevity of Cuba’s socialist regime; it examines the sociology of cultural administration of intellectual labor in Cuba; and it maps the emergent ethical and aesthetic paradigms that allow Cuban intellectuals to envision alternative forms of community and civil society.

What is the physical cause of blackness and African hair, and what is the cause of Black degeneration, the contest announcement asked. Sixteen essays, written in French and Latin, were ultimately dispatched from all over Europe. The authors ranged from naturalists to physicians, theologians to amateur savants.- Documented on each page are European ideas about who is Black and why.Looming behind these essays is the fact that some four million Africans had been kidnapped and shipped across the Atlantic by the time the contest was announced. The essays themselves represent a broad range of opinions. Some affirm that Africans had fallen from God’s grace; others that blackness had resulted from a brutal climate; still others emphasized the anatomical specificity of Africans. All the submissions nonetheless circulate around a common theme: the search for a scientific understanding of the new concept of race. It is the first complete translation into English of Masuccio's Novellino since that of W. G. Waters in 1895. The Novellino (50 tales over five decades) is fiercely anti-clerical, and its bitter satire and political prejudices ensured that it was put on the Index of Prohibited Books. The original manuscript was, in fact, burnt and the first edition was published posthumously.The tales can be grim and gothic, tragic or comic, erotic, or simply hilarious. The author is always at pains to present an agreeable mixture: he knows exactly how to cheer the reader with a morally uplifting tale to offset stories of murder, incest and skulduggery, and an endless series of ingeniously contrived adulteries.This new translation makes use of the editions, scholarship and dictionaries unavailable to the first translator, and it has had the advice and assistance of leading scholars of the genre today.

    Of Women and the Essay brings together forty-six American and British women essayists whose work spans nearly four centuries. The contributions of these essayists prove that women have been significant participants in the essay tradition since the genre’s modern beginnings in the sixteenth century. Many of these essayists, such as Eliza Haywood, Fanny Fern, Gertrude Bustill Mossell, Agnes Repplier, and Alice Meynell, achieved significant success as writers within whatever essay form ruled the day; others bent the rules, though often imperceptibly, to make room for themselves. Collectively they represent a missing piece in the larger history of the essay.In Of Women and the Essay Jenny Spinner contextualizes the broad range of literary essays included within the chronological development of the genre. She makes a compelling argument that women have constructed their own tradition in the essay genre, often utilizing periodic traits of the essay to their own advantage. At the same time, she suggests that the personal essay’s demands on the essayist required both a public and personal authorization that proved challenging for women essayists in general and for women of color in particular. The appendix catalogs the works of nearly 200 female essayists and should inspire further reading. As a whole, the volume lifts women writers from the cutting-room floor of essay scholarship and returns them to their rightful place in the essay canon

    Büchner hat in seinem kurzen Leben aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach ausführliche Briefwechsel mit vielen verschiedenen Adressaten geführt. Die Überlieferungslage ist allerdings noch viel schlechter als bei seinen Werken: viele Briefe sind gar nicht in der Handschrift erhalten, andere nur in Teilen, den Großteil kennt man nur aus Ausschnitten, die die Adressaten in die Ausgaben des 19. Jahrhunderts einbrachten. Gleichwohl stehen in diesen Briefen hochberühmte Selbstaussagen wie etwa die vom "gräßlichen Fatalismus der Geschichte" - ihre Bedeutung als politisches Bekenntnis ist zweifelhaft.     The Visionary Queen affirms Marguerite de Navarre’s status not only as a political figure, author, or proponent of non-schismatic reform, but also as a visionary. In her life and writings, the queen of Navarre dissected the injustices that her society and its institutions perpetuated against women. We also see evidence that she used her literary texts, especially the HeptamÉron, as an exploratory space in which to generate a creative vision for institutional reform. The HeptamÉron’s approach to reform emerges from statistical analysis of the text’s 72 tales, which reveals new insights into trends within the work, including the different categories of wrongdoing by male, institutional representatives from the Church and aristocracy, as well as the varying responses to injustice that characters in the tales employ as they pursue reform.
