    Spiritual Grammar identifies a genre of religious literature that until now has not been recognized as such. In this surprising and theoretically nuanced study, F. Dominic Longo reveals how grammatical structures of language addressed in two medieval texts published nearly four centuries apart, from distinct religious traditions, offer a metaphor for how the self is embedded in spiritual reality. Reading The Grammar of Hearts (Nahw al-qulūb) by the great Sufi shaykh and Islamic scholar 'Abd al-Karīm al-Qushayrī (d. 1074) and Moralized Grammar (Donatus moralizatus) by Christian theologian Jean Gerson (d. 1429), Longo reveals how both authors use the rules of language and syntax to advance their pastoral goals. Indeed, grammar provides the two masters with a fresh way of explaining spiritual reality to their pupils and to discipline the souls of their readers in the hopes that their writings would make others adept in the grammar of the heart

    A reexamination of Austen’s unpublished writings that uncovers their continuity with her celebrated novels—and that challenges distinctions between the writer’s “early” and “late” periodsJane Austen’s six novels, published toward the end of her short life, represent a body of work that is as brilliant as it is compact. Her earlier writings have routinely been dismissed as mere juvenilia, or stepping stones to mature proficiency and greatness. Austen’s first biographer described them as “childish effusions.” Was he right to do so? Can the novels be definitively separated from the unpublished works? In Jane Austen, Early and Late, Freya Johnston argues that they cannot.Examining the three manuscript volumes in which Austen collected her earliest writings, Johnston finds that Austen’s regard and affection for them are revealed by her continuing to revisit and revise them throughout her adult life. The teenage works share the milieu and the humour of the novels, while revealing more clearly the sources and influences upon which Austen drew. Johnston upends the conventional narrative according to which Austen discarded the satire and fantasy of her first writings in favour of the irony and realism of the novels. By demonstrating a stylistic and thematic continuity across the full range of Austen’s work, Johnston asks whether it makes sense to speak of an early and a late Austen at all.Jane Austen, Early and Late offers a new picture of the author in all her complexity and ambiguity, and shows us that it is not necessarily true that early work yields to later, better things

    Metaisierungen - Reflexionen über Kunst in der Kunst, die auf Gemachtheit und Erfundenheit hinweisen - sind in allen Gattungen, Medien und Epochen zu finden. Bisherige Studien konzentrieren sich jedoch vorwiegend auf die Literatur der Postmoderne und zeichnen sich durch das Fehlen einer klaren Terminologie aus. Das vorliegende Kompendium liefert erstmals eine systematische Begriffsklärung und theoretische Modellbildung, die eine historisch und medial differenzierte Perspektive auf literarische und mediale Selbstreflexivität ermöglicht. Beispielanalysen von Werken aus unterschiedlichen Gattungen, Medien und Epochen (von Homers Odyssee bis zu den Simpsons) stellen medienspezifische Zugänge und historisch perspektivierte Funktionsbeschreibungen vor und geben somit einen umfassenden Überblick über die vielfältigen Erscheinungsformen von Metaisierung. Ein Schwerpunkt der Beiträge liegt auf der Analyse sogenannter ,Metagattungen' wie des metamnemonischen Romans oder der fiktionalen Metabiographie. Das durch den Band bereitgestellte, flexible Repertoire von Kategorien eignet sich für eingehende Detailuntersuchungen ebenso wie für die terminologisch exakte Beschreibung diachroner Veränderungen

    A reexamination of Austen’s unpublished writings that uncovers their continuity with her celebrated novels—and that challenges distinctions between the writer’s “early” and “late” periodsJane Austen’s six novels, published toward the end of her short life, represent a body of work that is as brilliant as it is compact. Her earlier writings have routinely been dismissed as mere juvenilia, or stepping stones to mature proficiency and greatness. Austen’s first biographer described them as “childish effusions.” Was he right to do so? Can the novels be definitively separated from the unpublished works? In Jane Austen, Early and Late, Freya Johnston argues that they cannot.Examining the three manuscript volumes in which Austen collected her earliest writings, Johnston finds that Austen’s regard and affection for them are revealed by her continuing to revisit and revise them throughout her adult life. The teenage works share the milieu and the humour of the novels, while revealing more clearly the sources and influences upon which Austen drew. Johnston upends the conventional narrative according to which Austen discarded the satire and fantasy of her first writings in favour of the irony and realism of the novels. By demonstrating a stylistic and thematic continuity across the full range of Austen’s work, Johnston asks whether it makes sense to speak of an early and a late Austen at all.Jane Austen, Early and Late offers a new picture of the author in all her complexity and ambiguity, and shows us that it is not necessarily true that early work yields to later, better things

Die Studie konzentriert sich auf die geographische, rhetorische und visuell-mediale Erschließung und Darstellung von Erde und ,Neuer Welt‘ in den Epen Os Lusíadas von Camões und La Araucana von Ercilla und berücksichtigt zudem Ariosts Orlando furioso, Tassos Gerusalemme liberata und frühneuzeitliche dokumentarische Texte.

    Metaisierungen - Reflexionen über Kunst in der Kunst, die auf Gemachtheit und Erfundenheit hinweisen - sind in allen Gattungen, Medien und Epochen zu finden. Bisherige Studien konzentrieren sich jedoch vorwiegend auf die Literatur der Postmoderne und zeichnen sich durch das Fehlen einer klaren Terminologie aus. Das vorliegende Kompendium liefert erstmals eine systematische Begriffsklärung und theoretische Modellbildung, die eine historisch und medial differenzierte Perspektive auf literarische und mediale Selbstreflexivität ermöglicht. Beispielanalysen von Werken aus unterschiedlichen Gattungen, Medien und Epochen (von Homers Odyssee bis zu den Simpsons) stellen medienspezifische Zugänge und historisch perspektivierte Funktionsbeschreibungen vor und geben somit einen umfassenden Überblick über die vielfältigen Erscheinungsformen von Metaisierung. Ein Schwerpunkt der Beiträge liegt auf der Analyse sogenannter ,Metagattungen' wie des metamnemonischen Romans oder der fiktionalen Metabiographie. Das durch den Band bereitgestellte, flexible Repertoire von Kategorien eignet sich für eingehende Detailuntersuchungen ebenso wie für die terminologisch exakte Beschreibung diachroner Veränderungen

    How nineteenth-century "disciplines of attention" anticipated the contemporary concern with mindfulness and being "spiritual but not religious"Today, we're driven to distraction, our attention overwhelmed by the many demands upon it-most of which emanate from our beeping and blinking digital devices. This may seem like a decidedly twenty-first-century problem, but, as Caleb Smith shows in this elegantly written, meditative work, distraction was also a serious concern in American culture two centuries ago. In Thoreau's Axe, Smith explores the strange, beautiful archives of the nineteenth-century attention revival-from a Protestant minister's warning against frivolous thoughts to Thoreau's reflections on wakefulness at Walden Pond. Smith examines how Americans came to embrace attention, mindfulness, and other ways of being "spiritual but not religious," and how older Christian ideas about temptation and spiritual devotion endure in our modern ideas about distraction and attention.Smith explains that nineteenth-century worries over attention developed in response to what were seen as the damaging mental effects of new technologies and economic systems. A "wandering mind," once diagnosed, was in need of therapy or rehabilitation. Modeling his text after nineteenth-century books of devotion, Smith offers close readings of twenty-eight short passages about attention. Considering social reformers who designed moral training for the masses, religious leaders who organized Christian revivals, and spiritual seekers like Thoreau who experimented with regimens of simplified living and transcendental mysticism, Smith shows how disciplines of attention became the spiritual exercises of a distracted age

Her earlier writings have routinely been dismissed as mere juvenilia, or stepping stones to mature proficiency and greatness. Austen's first biographer described them as "childish effusions." Was he right to do so? Can the novels be definitively separated from the unpublished works? In Jane Austen, Early and Late, Freya Johnston argues that they cannot.Examining the three manuscript volumes in which Austen collected her earliest writings, Johnston finds that Austen's regard and affection for them are revealed by her continuing to revisit and revise them throughout her adult life. The teenage works share the milieu and the humour of the novels, while revealing more clearly the sources and influences upon which Austen drew. Johnston upends the conventional narrative according to which Austen discarded the satire and fantasy of her first writings in favour of the irony and realism of the novels. By demonstrating a stylistic and thematic continuity across the full range of Austen's work, Johnston asks whether it makes sense to speak of an early and a late Austen at all.Jane Austen, Early and Late offers a new picture of the author in all her complexity and ambiguity, and shows us that it is not necessarily true that early work yields to later, better things
