    Critical analysis of the dramatisation of homosexuality in British fiction about the Second World War is noticeable only by its relative absence from the field. Whereas feminist literary criticism has broadened the canon of war fiction to include narratives by and about women, queer scholars have seldom focused on literary representations of homosexuality during the war. Natalie Marena Nobitz closes a glaring gap in the critical attention of four novels dealing with the disruption of gender roles and institutionalised heteronormativity: Walter Baxter's Look Down in Mercy (1951), Mary Renault's The Charioteer (1952), Sarah Waters' The Night Watch (2006) and Adam Fitzroy's Make Do and Mend (2012).

    This collection of essays explores the continuities and disruptions in the perceptions of criminality, its causes and ways of fighting it in late imperial Russia and the early Soviet Union. It focuses on both the discourse on criminality and thus the conceptualisation of criminality in various disciplines (criminology, psychiatry, and literature), and penal practice, that is, different aspects of criminal law and anti-crime policy. Thus, the volume is markedly interdisciplinary, with authors representing a variety of approaches in history and literary studies, from social history to discourse analysis, from the history of sciences to text analysis.

    Die systematische Suche nach einschlägigen Dokumenten in Archiven, Bibliotheken und Privatsammlungen Österreichs, Italiens, Deutschlands, der Schweiz sowie in Slowenien und Tschechien hat eine ansehnliche Materialsammlung von rd. 700 Stücken mit direkter Namensnennung Oswalds von Wolkenstein oder zumindest seiner indirekten Erwähnung gebracht, die in ihrer Art wohl einzigartig ist. Anhand der daraus erwachsenen vierbändigen Edition kann erstmals das Leben, Handeln und Denken einer nichtfürstlichen Person des Mittelalters, die zudem als Künstler von eminentem Interesse ist, durch eine Vielzahl von historischen Zeugnissen bis ins Detail ausgeleuchtet werden. Die im nun vorliegenden ersten Band enthaltenen Dokumente aus dem Zeitraum von 1382 bis 1419 werden nach dem bewährten Muster historischer Urkundenedition mit Kopfregesten und beschreibendem Apparat präsentiert und personenbegleitend kommentiert. Die Wiedergabe der Texte erfolgt in präzis dokumentierter Form. Im ersten Band lernt der Leser einen zweitgeborenen Sohn aus rittermäßiger Familie, Lehnsmann des Bischofs von Brixen und zugleich Mitglied des landsässigen Adels der Grafschaft Tirol bei seinen umtriebigen Bemühungen um Aufstieg kennen. Nach unsteten Jahren als adeliger Krieger, Kreuzfahrer und Diplomat sowie nach relativ vergeblichen Versuchen, als Verwaltungsfachmann, Rechtskenner und Adelspolitiker zu höherem Ansehen zu gelangen, gewinnt er mit seiner Aufnahme in die Dienste König Sigmunds von Luxemburg eine Sonderstellung als Agent zwischen dem Reichsoberhaupt und dem gegen seinen österreichischen Landesfürsten rebellierenden Tiroler Adel. Allerdings muß er die Verbesserung seiner Vermögenslage, seine Rangerhöhung und Teilhabe an der Macht mit Gefährdung seines Besitzes und Lebens erkaufen, wie der zweite Band zeigen wird. Im dritten und vierten Band soll der arrivierte Oswald von Wolkenstein als Politiker im Dienste des Reichs und der Grafschaft Tirol vorgestellt werden.

    Die vorliegenden Beiträge sind zum überwiegenden Teil aus der Arbeit für das Freie Deutsche Hochstift/Frankfurter Goethe-Museum hervorgegangen. Ohne daß Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stets im Zentrum der Untersuchung stünde, bleiben sie doch alle auf ihn bezogen. Das Spektrum reicht von der Darlegung wesentlicher Voraussetzungen, die zur klassischen Blütezeit führten, über das Umfeld des Goetheschen Jugendwerks bis zur Epoche des »West-östlichen Divan«. Ihr Ziel ist es, ausgehend von der philologischen Rekonstruktion und Interpretation zu größeren geistesgeschichtlichen, motivgeschichtlichen oder lebensgeschichtlichen Zusammenhängen vorzudringen Most of the essays in this collection are the fruit of work done for the Goethe Museum Frankfurt/Main (Freies Deutsches Hochstift). While Goethe is not always in the forefront of the studies, they ultimately all revolve around him. The spectrum ranges from a discussion of some essential preconditions for the flowering of German classicism and the environment in which Goethe's youthful works took shape to the epoch of the "West-Östlicher Divan". Common to all is the aim of proceeding from philological interpretation and reconstruction to broader perspectives on the history of ideas, the history of literary motifs and Goethe's biography

    Der Band enthält eine Reihe von Vorträgen, die vom 26.--29.5.1999 im Rahmen des internationalen Symposiums »150 Jahre Mabinogion - Deutsch-walisische Kulturbeziehungen« an der Universität Bonn gehalten wurden. Gegenstand der 20 Beiträge sind zum einen jene mittelalterlichen walisischen Erzählungen, die man seit der 1849 vollendeten Übersetzung von Lady Charlotte Guest unter dem Namen »Mabinogion« kennt, zum anderen die Geschichte der deutsch-walisischen Beziehungen, wie sie in Literatur, Kunst und Musik sowie in der wissenschaftlichen Erforschung der keltischen Kultur Ausdruck gefunden haben The volume contains a series of papers delivered at the University of Bonn on the occasion of an international symposium entitled »150 Years of the Mabinogion: German-Welsh Cultural Relations«, which took place there on 26--29 May 1999. Of the 20 articles, some concentrate on those medieval Welsh narratives known since Lady Charlotte Guest's translation (completed 1849) as the »Mabinogion«, while others address the history of German-Welsh relations as reflected in literature, art and music on the one hand and the scholarly study of Celtic literature on the other

Untangling his witty, bawdy (and ambiguous) treatment of love, sex, and desire requires a sharp eye and a steady hand. In Shakespeare on Love and Lust, noted scholar Maurice Charney delves deeply into Shakespeare's rhetorical and thematic development of this largest of subjects to reveal what makes his plays and poems resonate with contemporary audiences. The paradigmatic star-crossed lovers of Romeo and Juliet, the comic confusions of couples wandering through the wood in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Othello's tragic jealousy, the homoerotic ways Shakespeare played with cross-dressing on the Elizabethan stage--Charney explores the world in which Shakespeare lived, and how it is reflected and transformed in the one he created.While focusing primarily on desire between young lovers, Charney also explores themes of love in marriage (Brutus and Portia) and in same-sex pairings (Antonio and Sebastian). Against the conventions of Renaissance literature, Shakespeare qualified the Platonic view that true love transcends the physical. For decades the "Spirit of Whampoa" was invoked as the highest praise to all Chinese soldiers who guarded their nation heroically. But of all the battles these soldiers have fought, the most challenging one was the civil war that resulted in the "great divide" of China in the mid-twentieth century. In 1949 the Communists exiled a million soldiers and their families to compounds in Taiwan and cut off communication with mainland China for forty years. The Last of the Whampoa Breed tells the stories of the exiles written by their descendants, many of whom have become Taiwan's most important authors. The book is an important addition to the vastly underrepresented literature of Taiwan in translation and sheds light on the complex relationship between Taiwan and the People's Republic of China. Western readers will not at first recognize the experiences of these soldiers who were severed from a traditional past only to face unfulfilled promises and uncertain futures. Many of the exiles were doomed to live and die homeless and loveless. Yet these life stories reveal a magnanimous, natural dignity that has transcended prolonged mental suffering. "I Wanted to Go to War" describes the sadly ineffectual, even comic attempts to "recapture the mainland." The old soldier in "Tale of Two Strangers" asks to have his ashes scattered over both the land of his dreams and the island that has sheltered him for forty years.     Gypsies and the British Imagination, 1807-1930, is the first book to explore fully the British obsession with Gypsies throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth. Deborah Epstein Nord traces various representations of Gypsies in the works of such well-known British authors John Clare, Walter Scott, William Wordsworth, George Eliot, Arthur Conan Doyle, and D. H. Lawrence. Nord also exhumes lesser-known literary, ethnographic, and historical texts, exploring the fascinating histories of nomadic writer George Borrow, the Gypsy Lore Society, Dora Yates, and other rarely examined figures and institutions.Gypsies were both idealized and reviled by Victorian and early-twentieth-century Britons. Associated with primitive desires, lawlessness, cunning, and sexual excess, Gypsies were also objects of antiquarian, literary, and anthropological interest. As Nord demonstrates, British writers and artists drew on Gypsy characters and plots to redefine and reconstruct cultural and racial difference, national and personal identity, and the individual's relationship to social and sexual orthodoxies. Gypsies were long associated with pastoral conventions and, in the nineteenth century, came to stand in for the ancient British past. Using myths of switched babies, Gypsy kidnappings, and the Gypsies' murky origins, authors projected onto Gypsies their own desires to escape convention and their anxieties about the ambiguities of identity. The literary representations that Nord examines have their roots in the interplay between the notion of Gypsies as a separate, often despised race and the psychic or aesthetic desire to dissolve the

    Guo Songfen's short stories are masterful psychological portraits that play with the echoes of history and the nature of identity. One of the few modernists to truly capture the fallout from such events as the February 28th Incident and the White Terror, Guo Songfen illuminates the quiet core of his characters through a spare and immediate style that is at once a symptom and an allegory of the trauma in which they live.In "Running Mother," a man is torn between his fear of abandonment and his guilt over leaving his family, and therefore his symbolic home, behind. "Moon Seal" follows a woman caught between traditional and modern worlds. In "Wailing Moon," a wife learns a shocking secret after her husband's death, realizing he was never the man she thought him to be. Set in the United States and Taiwan, "Snow Blind" is a multigenerational triptych that portrays the consequences of spiritual malaise, and in "Brightly Shines the Stars Tonight," a general wrestles with issues of memory and self-perception in the final moments before his execution. Guo Songfen's stories play with the hazards of miscommunication, the malevolence of human will, the arbitrary nature of fate, and the burden of historical circumstance. As the general discovers, life is a game of chess, the outcome of which is never certain though it might be logically designed. Showcasing the best of Taiwan's modernist style, these stories are not only an indictment of the human condition but also a powerful comment on the experience of postretrocession Taiwan.

    O Chonghui crafts historically-rooted yet timeless tales imagining core human experiences from a female point of view. Since her debut in 1968, she has formed a powerful challenge to the patriarchal literary establishment in Korea, and her work has invited rich comparisons with the achievements of Joyce Carol Oates, Alice Munro, and Virginia Woolf. These nine stories range from O Chonghui's first published work, in 1968, to one of her last publications, in 1994. Her early stories are compact, often chilling accounts of family dysfunction, reflecting the decline of traditional, agrarian economics and the rise of urban, industrial living. Later stories are more expansive, weaving eloquent, occasionally wistful reflections on lost love and tradition together with provocative explorations of sexuality and gender. O Chonghui makes use of flashbacks, interior monologues, and stream-of-consciousness in her narratives, developing themes of abandonment and loneliness in a carefully cultivated, dispassionate tone. O Chonghui's narrators stand in for the average individual, struggling to cope with emotional rootlessness and a yearning for permanence in family and society. Arguably the first female Korean fiction writer to follow Woolf's dictum to do away with the egoless, self-sacrificing "angel in the house," O Chonghui is a crucial figure in the history of modern Korean literature, one of the most astute observers of Korean society and the place of tradition within it.
