    This book explores the Gothic mode as it appears in the literature, visual arts, and culture of different areas of Latin America. Focusing on works from authors in Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, the Andes, Brazil, and the Southern Cone, the essays in this volume illuminate the existence of native representations of the Gothic, while also exploring the presence of universal archetypes of terror and horror. Through the analysis of global and local Gothic topics and themes, they evaluate the reality of a multifaceted territory marked by a shifting colonial and postcolonial relationship with Europe and the United States. The book asks questions such as: Is there such a thing as "Latin American Gothic" in the same sense that there is an "American Gothic" and "British Gothic"? What are the main elements that particularly characterize Latin American Gothic? How does Latin American Gothic function in the context of globalization? What do these elements represent in relation to specific national literatures? What is the relationship between the Gothic and the Postcolonial? What can Gothic criticism bring to the study of Latin American cultural manifestations and, conversely, what can these offer the Gothic? The analysis performed here reflects a body of criticism that understands the Gothic as a global phenomenon with specific manifestations in particular territories while also acknowledging the effects of "Globalgothic" on a transnational and transcultural level. Thus, the volume seeks to open new spaces and areas of scholarly research and academic discussion both regionally and globally with the presentation of a solid analysis of Latin American texts and other cultural phenomena which are manifestly related to the Gothic world.

    The "wiles of women" are a timeless literary theme, treated from ancient Egyptian narratives to 21st-century TV series. The theme reaches its greatest flowering in the Islamic world, beginning with the Qur’an and inspiring entire literary traditions in Arabic, Persian, and Turkish. The Wiles of Women as a Literary Genre is the first study devoted to the Turkish branch of the tradition. The book consists of three parts: (a) a narrative analysis that helps to define the stories as a literary genre, (b) a cultural analysis exploring the worldview beneath the stories, and (c) transliterations and English translations of 17 previously unavailable stories in Ottoman and Azeri Turkish.The genre is colorful and heterogeneous, with different stories viewing the wiles of women as evil and dangerous, as frivolous and amusing, or as thoughtful and instructive. Still, women are depicted by all stories as intrinsically and incorrigibly guileful. The same does not hold for men, who are granted moral agency and the capacity to learn from their mistakes. The outcome is a world that serves as a testing ground for men, with women as obstacles or at best mediators between men and a virtuous life. But in spite of this rigid frame, many stories employ humor and ambiguity—for instance by casting men in guileful roles—to grant a more nuanced view of social and gender relations.

    Etwa seit der Jahrtausendwende diskutiert die Mediävistik das mittelalterliche Wiederbearbeiten tradierter Stoffe unter dem Paradigma der ‚Retextualisierung‘. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf der Epik. Doch wie lassen sich Retextualisierungen in Texten beschreiben, die hinsichtlich Gattungszugehörigkeit und Entstehungszeit von diesem Forschungsschwerpunkt abweichen?Dieser Frage geht die vorliegende Studie nach, indem sie den Gattungstransfer der neutestamentlichen Geschichte um Johannes den Täufer in das Bibeldrama des 16. Jahrhunderts untersucht. Die Heterogenität des Johannesspiels, eines Subtyps des Bibeldramas mit acht Vertretern im deutschen Sprachraum, verfasst von katholischen wie protestantischen Autoren, in deutscher wie lateinischer Sprache, äußert sich in einer großen Bandbreite verwendeter Retextualisierungsverfahren. Konfessionsspezifische Bearbeitungstendenzen lassen sich dabei ebenso nachweisen wie Einflüsse des infolge der Dramatisierung veränderten Mediums: der Bühne und ihrer Form.

    Depuis son invention par Serge Doubrovsky en 1977, le terme ‘autofiction’ a fait l’objet de vives controverses. Celles-ci ont été suscitées par le fait qu’au cours des dernières décennies de nombreux auteurs ont utilisé l’écriture autofictionnelle comme un moyen pour partager des détails explosifs de leur vie, tout en insistant sur une partie "fictionnelle" indéterminée de leur oeuvre. L’interférence entre des stratégies narratives fictionnelles et factuelles, propre à l’autofiction, semble prédestiner celle-ci à la représentation et à la provocation du scandale. Ce volume rassemble des contributions qui éclairent la relation entre l’autofiction et le scandale d’un point de vue épistémologique, littéraire, historique et esthétique, et qui explorent la question éthique des limites entre l’espace public et l’espace privé.Die Rezeptionsgeschichte des 1977 von Serge Doubrovsky geprägten und seitdem stark polarisierendem Begriff der Autofiktion zeigt, dass autofiktionales Schreiben in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten von zahlreichen Autor:innen als Möglichkeit genutzt wurde, einerseits brisante Einblicke in ihr Leben zu geben, sich andererseits jedoch bei Bedarf auf einen nicht bestimmbaren "fiktionalen" Anteil ihres Werks zu berufen. Die der Autofiktion zugrunde liegenden Interferenzen zwischen fiktionalen und faktualen Erzählstrategien scheinen die Autofiktion zur Darstellung und Provokation von Skandalen zu prädestinieren.     Ein Blick in die Programme von Verlagen, Fernsehsendern und Filmanbietern zeigt, dass es kein populäreres Genre gibt als den Krimi. Allein von Agatha Christies Romanen wurden über zwei Milliarden Exemplare verkauft. Die Figur Sherlock Holmes gehört zu den frühesten Film- und Serienhelden und am Anfang der modernen Krimiliteratur stehen Erzählungen nicht nur von Edgar Allan Poe, sondern auch von Friedrich Schiller und E.T.A. Hoffmann. Erstmals wird der Versuch gewagt, an exemplarischen Beispielen aus Literatur, Film und Serie in den ‚ganzen‘ Krimi einzuführen - in Merkmale, Geschichte und Entwicklung. Die englischsprachige Krimitradition wird in die Darstellung mit einbezogen. Bisher hat sich die Forschung selten mit dem als trivial geltenden Genre beschäftigt. Ein genauerer Blick zeigt aber, dass der Krimi genauso anspruchsvolle Beispiele bereithält wie andere Genres.

    Arabic fiction has thematized crime ever since the classical period. However, the existence of detective stories or, more generally, of crime fiction as a genre within Arab culture has yet to be fully acknowledged. This book therefore offers both a theoretical reflection on this genre in its context and a set of studies on instances of crime fiction in the Arab world. Covering a vast historical and geographical range, it tackles famous writers as well as authors of young adult fiction, deals with the current practitioners of noir as well as with classical detective stories, and also focuses on the adjacent fields of film and television production. Arabic Crime Fiction / Le récit criminel arabe thus fills a theoretical and historical gap in current scholarship. Bringing together specialists of Arab literature and cinema and/or crime fiction, it provides an overview of a rich and varied genre, at the crossroads between the narrative, philosophical, and legal traditions of the Arab world, the realities of contemporary society, and the international forms of crime fiction. It thus demonstrates that Arabic crime fiction does, indeed, exist, even though it is not yet fully recognized by the publishing market and academic institutions.

    For decades, crime novelists have set their stories in New York City, a place long famed for decay, danger, and intrigue. What happens when the mean streets of the city are no longer quite so mean? In the wake of an unprecedented drop in crime in the 1990s and the real-estate development boom in the early 2000s, a new suspect is on the scene: gentrification. Thomas Heise identifies and investigates the emerging "gentrification plot" in contemporary crime fiction. He considers recent novels that depict the sweeping transformations of five iconic neighborhoods-the Lower East Side, Chinatown, Red Hook, Harlem, and Bedford-Stuyvesant-that have been central to African American, Latinx, immigrant, and blue-collar life in the city. Heise reads works by Richard Price, Henry Chang, Gabriel Cohen, Reggie Nadelson, Ivy Pochoda, Grace Edwards, Ernesto Quinonez, Wil Medearis, and Brian Platzer, tracking their representations of "broken-windows" policing, cultural erasure, racial conflict, class grievance, and displacement. Placing their novels in conversation with oral histories, urban planning, and policing theory, he explores crime fiction's contradictory and ambivalent portrayals of the postindustrial city's dizzying metamorphoses while underscoring the material conditions of the genre. From the popularity of such stories, it is clear that the Victorians valorized personal ambition in ways that previous generations had not. In Material Ambitions, Rebecca Richardson explores this phenomenon in light of the under-studied reception history of Samuel Smiles's 1859 publication, Self-Help: With Illustrations of Character, Conduct, and Perseverance. A compilation of vignettes about captains of industry, artists, and inventors who persevered through failure and worked tirelessly to achieve success in their respective fields, Self-Help links individual ambition to the growth of the nation.- Contextualizing Smiles's work in a tradition of Renaissance self-fashioning, eighteenth-century advice books, and inspirational biography, Richardson argues that the burgeoning self-help genre of the Victorian era offered a narrative structure that linked individual success with collective success in a one-to-one relationship. Advocating for a broader cultural account of the ambitious hero narrative, Richardson argues that reading these biographies and self-help texts alongside fictional accounts of driven people complicates the morality tale that writers like Smiles took pains to invoke. In chapters featuring the works of Harriet Martineau, Dinah Craik, Thackeray, Trollope, and Miles Franklin, Richardson demonstrates that Victorian fiction dramatized ambition by suggesting where it runs up against the limits of an individual's energy and ability, where it turns into competition, or where it risks upsetting a socio-ecological system of finite resources.-

Divided into 14 chapters, it systematically covers central aspects of folklore literature such as ballads, folk songs, Bianwen, Zajuci, Guzici, Zhugongdiao, Sanqu, Baojuan, Tanci, Zidishu, and so on from the Pre-Qin to the late Qing Dynasties, filling several gaps in literary history studies. It is a comprehensive literary work, and many of the materials cited here are rare and difficult to find.
