    Valentin Lefèvre, chi era costui? Nell’anno manzoniano è quasi d’obbligo parafrasare la celebre domanda che, nei Promessi sposi, don Abbondio si fa a proposito del filosofo greco Carneade. In effetti non a tutti è noto il pittore e incisore fiammingo emigrato dalla natia Bruxelles a Venezia, dove è attivo dalla metà circa del Seicento fino alla scomparsa nel 1677, di cui questa mostra dossier intende far conoscere la qualità grafica. Come chiarisce il saggio di Lüdemann in questo catalogo, mentre i suoi dipinti documentati in laguna mostrano la fascinazione per Paolo Veronese, è nel settore delle incisioni che il suo rapporto con le opere di Tiziano si fa stretto e stimolante, rivelando una profonda comprensione del maestro cadorino, soprattutto nella scelta di temi paesaggistici. Il "Fiorentino detto Valentino quondam Romano Lafevre da Brusselles pittore fiamengho" – come si dichiara nel testamento redatto il 27 agosto 1677 a Venezia e nel successivo inventario dei suoi pochi beni – non vedrà pubblicate, in quanto uscite postume nel 1682, le sue ventotto acqueforti da originali, o creduti tali, di Tiziano, nell’Opera selectiora dell’editore Jacopo van Campen unitamente alle molte tratte da opere veronesiane
