    What is literature? Can we measure 'literariness' in texts themselves? The innovative Computational Humanities project The Riddle of Literary Quality asked thousands of Dutch readers for their opinion about contemporary Dutch and translated novels. The public shared which novels they had read, what they really thought of them, and how they judged their quality. Their judgments of the same novels were compared with the results of computational analysis of the books. Using evidence from almost 14,000 readers and building on more textual data than ever before, Van Dalen-Oskam and her team uncovered unconscious biases that shed new light on prejudices many people assumed no longer existed. This monograph explains in an accessible way how the project unfolded, which methods were used, and how the results may change the future of Literary Studies

    Il rapporto di Elio Vittorini con il proprio romanzo Uomini e no (Bompiani, 1945) è stato senza dubbio problematico e caratterizzato da continui ripensamenti e revisioni. Questo volume spiega le ragioni della complessa relazione tra autore e testo, a partire dai primi momenti della genesi del romanzo, documentati da carte autografe inedite, conservate nel Fondo Elio Vittorini del Centro Apice dell’Università degli Studi di Milano e qui studiate per la prima volta, insieme ai materiali di lavorazione redazionale della prima edizione. La ricostruzione delle ulteriori trasformazioni del testo è testimoniata poi dalle successive stampe e da altri documenti archivistici inediti che ne spiegano il progetto letterario e editoriale. Il percorso tracciato copre dunque un arco cronologico che va dal 1944 al 1966 – anno della morte dell’autore e dell’ultima edizione riconducibile alla sua volontà – e racconta quali siano state le ragioni poetiche, etiche e politiche che hanno avviato la scrittura del romanzo e che hanno motivato le successive continue rielaborazioni. L’analisi ravvicinata dei materiali testuali permette di entrare nel laboratorio di scrittura dell’autore, di spiegare le radicali modifiche per la seconda edizione del 1949, per concludersi poi sulle revisioni compiute per le ultime edizioni Mondadori del 1965 (Oscar) e 1966 (I Narratori). La diacronia di un romanzo, per raccontare una tappa cruciale del lavoro letterario di Elio Vittorini e per rileggere i giudizi critici su Uomini e no a partire dall’autenticità storica e filologica del testo

    With a burgeoning academic interest in Latin American science fiction and cyberfiction and in representations of science and technology in Latin American literature and cinema, this book adds new understanding to the growing body of interdisciplinary work on the relationship between literature and science in postmodern culture.Joanna Page examines how contemporary fiction and literary theory in Argentina consistently employ theories and models from mathematics and science to probe the nature of innovation and evolution in literature. Theories of incompleteness, uncertainty, and chaos are often mobilized in European and North American literary and philosophical texts as metaphors for the inadequacy of our epistemological tools to probe the world's complexity. However, in recent Argentine fiction, these generalizations are put to very different uses: to map out the potential for artistic creativity and regeneration in times of crisis. Page focuses on texts by contemporary Argentine writers Ricardo Piglia, Guillermo Martínez and Marcelo Cohen, which draw on theories of formal systems, chaos, emergence, and complexity to counter proclamations of the end of philosophy or the exhaustion of literature in the postmodern era.This book makes a significant contribution to our understanding of how newness and creativity have been theorized, tracing often unexpected relationships between thinkers such as Nietzsche, Deleuze, and the Russian Formalists.
