    2012 wurde das Netzwerk-Projekt Landeskunde Nord ins Leben gerufen, dessen Ziel es ist, Forschung und Lehre zur Landeskunde des Deutschen als Fremdsprache, insbesondere in den nordischen Ländern, voranzutreiben. Das vorliegende Buch, Perspektive Nord, knüpft an den 2013 erschienenen Band Landeskunde Nord an und bietet Reflexionen wissenschaftstheoretischer, fachdidaktischer und inhaltlicher Aspekte, die für die Gestaltung der Landeskundelehre bzw. des Landeskundeunterrichts relevant sind. In ihrer Vielfalt sind die hier vorgelegten Konzepte und Ideen vor allem modernen kulturwissenschaftlichen Ansätzen verpflichtet, knüpfen an international geführte Diskussionen an und haben auch deshalb über die nordischen Länder hinaus Bedeutung. Dabei setzen die Autorinnen und Autoren auf autonomes und lebenslanges Lernen.

    Landeskunde beinhaltet immer auch eine regionale Perspektive, nicht zuletzt hinsichtlich des Ortes, an dem Forschung und Lehre bzw. Unterricht stattfinden. 2012 wurde deshalb das Netzwerk-Projekt Landeskunde Nord ins Leben gerufen, dessen Ziel es ist, Forschung und Lehre zur germanistischen Landeskunde, insbesondere in den nordischen Ländern, voranzutreiben. Pädagogische Konzepte, die über die fragwürdige Vermittlung von Daten und angeblich typischen Eigenschaften und Verhaltensweisen der Deutschen, Österreicher und Schweizer hinausgehen, sind rar. Diesem Defizit will der Band in seiner Verbindung von wissenschaftstheoretischer Fundierung und praktischen Beispielen abhelfen. Bei aller Vielfalt der Ansätze zeigen sich auch zahlreiche Gemeinsamkeiten, beispielsweise im Hinblick auf die Ablehnung eines homogenen Kulturbegriffs. Die Beiträge gehen nicht von schematischen Darstellungen mit universalem Anspruch aus, sondern von Phänomenen und Diskursen, wobei die Autorinnen und Autoren auf autonomes und lebenslanges Lernen setzen.

    Dieser interdisziplinäre Open Access-Band beschäftigt sich mit den vielfältigen Konzepten und Methoden des Übersetzens als zentraler und ubiquitärer Kulturtechnik der Frühen Neuzeit (1450–1800). In fünfzehn Einzelstudien werden gesellschaftliche Leitvorstellungen, Wahrnehmungsmuster und Kommunikationsformen erforscht, die seit dem 15. Jahrhundert durch Praktiken des Übersetzens etabliert werden und bis in die Gegenwart von prägender Bedeutung sind. Behandelt werden etwa jiddische und kymrische Bibelüber­setzungen, tamilische und zapotekische Missionstexte sowie französische und arabische Kartenmaterialien. This interdisciplinary open-access collection addresses the multifarious concepts and methods of translation as a central and ubiquitous cultural technique of the Early Modern period (1450–1800). It features fifteen studies on the guiding principles, perception patterns, and communication forms that have taken root in society since the fifteenth century through the practices of translation and are still of defining importance today. The research spectrum encompasses such diverse topics as Yiddish and Cymric translations of the Bible, Tamil and Zapotec mission texts, and French and Arabic cartographic material.

    In this open access book, seventeen scholars discuss how contemporary Scandinavian art and media have become important arenas to articulate and stage various forms of vulnerability in the Scandinavian welfare states. How do discourses of privilege and vulnerability coexist and interact in Scandinavia? How do the Scandinavian countries respond to vulnerability given increased migration? How is vulnerability distributed in terms of margin and centre, normality and deviance? And how can vulnerability be used to move audiences towards each other and accomplish change? We address these questions in an interdisciplinary study that brings examples from celebrated and provocative fiction and documentary films, TV-series, reality TV, art installations, design, literature, graphic art, radio podcasts and campaigns on social media.

    Quoting is all around us. But do we really know what it means? How do people actually quote today, and how did our present systems come about? This book brings together a down-to-earth account of contemporary quoting with an examination of the comparative and historical background that lies behind it and the characteristic way that quoting links past and present, the far and the near. Drawing from anthropology, cultural history, folklore, cultural studies, sociolinguistics, literary studies and the ethnography of speaking, Ruth Finnegan’s fascinating study sets our present conventions into cross-cultural and historical perspective. She traces the curious history of quotation marks, examines the long tradition of quotation collections with their remarkable recycling across the centuries, and explores the uses of quotation in literary, visual and oral traditions. The book tracks the changing definitions and control of quoting over the millennia and in doing so throws new light on ideas such as 'imitation', 'allusion', 'authorship', 'originality' and 'plagiarism'.

    In recent years, several investments have been made in graduate schools for teachers, with the aim of building up the school's knowledge base and increasing the number of teachers in the school with postgraduate education. The content of this book is based on the results from the national graduate school for language teachers The didactics of foreign languages ​​(FRAM) which was conducted with support from the Swedish Research Council during the period 2012-2015. The graduate school enabled a unique exchange of knowledge between active teachers who found interesting study objects in their current teaching context and the academy's researchers who saw the relevance of the project ideas in the background of the research field. This type of collaboration in research and education fulfilled the overall purpose of the graduate school. A synergy effect was that language didactic research in Sweden received an important addition of classroom-related research projects in a wide range of specializations. Based on the graduate school's three main areas, namely language learning, digital resources in language teaching and language assessment, projects were carved out on multilingualism, motivation, language and subject-integrated teaching, feedback, (co) assessment and much more. Participating authors are ten teachers who have researched the learning, teaching and assessment of English and modern languages. Their work is presented in separate chapters. In the introduction, the book's editors provide an insight into how a graduate school for teachers can be set up and how FRAM has contributed to the expanding and multifaceted research field Language Didactics.

    As much as scholars of Baltic Studies always claim independence for the languages and literature it involves, it is evident that the Baltic and Slavic languages and literature have been and still are in latent contact and exchange. The historical processes had led to interwoven but distinct cultural spheres `on the border.' Our interdisciplinary collection of essays follows several borderlines: Teresa Dalecka (University of Vilnius) discusses the Polish literature in Lithuania since 1990 and the environment that created it. Stephan Kessler (University of Greifswald) sketches a framework of narration and applies it to a story written by Maks Fraj who lives in Lithuania but is from Odessa by origin. Anna Stankeviča, Inna Dvorecka, and Jekaterina Gusakova (each from the University of Daugavpils) give an overview of Latvia's Russophone book market and analyse Vadim Vernik's formula fiction. Sergei Kruk (Stradiņš University in Rīga) discusses the Latvian concept of linguistic integration that roots in the romantic notions of social homogeneity and language as being a shibboleth for successful integration. Nicole Nau (University of Poznań) highlights four techniques for the integration of Slavic verbs and verbal derivational affixes into Latgalian, based on material from the 19th to the 21st century. Anastasija Kostiučenko (University of Greifswald), investigates how the concept of hybridity can be used to describe and better understand the language area and identity issues in Southeast Lithuania

Der Gebrauch des Englischen bleibt in dieser Zeit allerdings weitgehend auf die Insel beschränkt, während die Sprache auf dem Kontinent noch wenig geläufig ist. Erst seit dem 18. Jahrhundert gewinnt sie an internationaler Bedeutung und steigt schließlich zur modernen Weltsprache auf. Der Band fokussiert auf die vormoderne Situation und untersucht in 19 literatur-, kunst-, philosophie- und frömmigkeitsgeschichtlichen Fallstudien die deutsche Rezeption der frühneuzeitlichen englischen Literatur und Kultur. Mit Blick auf das bislang unzureichend erforschte deutsch-englische Interaktionsfeld erhellt er ebenso ausgewählte Personen, Institutionen und Wissensfelder wie Werkübertragungen, Gattungstransformationen und Übersetzungspraktiken, die den bereits in dieser Zeit bemerkenswert dichten Austausch zwischen England und dem Alten Reich prägten.     This book analyses changing views on bilingualism in Cognitive Psychology and explores their socio-cultural embeddedness. It offers a new, innovative perspective on the debate on possible cognitive (dis)advantages in bilinguals, arguing that it is biased by popular "language myths", which often manifest themselves in the form of metaphors. Since its beginnings, Cognitive Psychology has consistently modelled the coexistence between languages in the brain using metaphors of struggle, conflict and competition. However, an ideological shift from nationalist and monolingual ideologies to the celebration of bilingualism under multicultural and neoliberal ideologies in the course of the 20th century fostered opposing interpretations of language coexistence in the brain and its effects on bilinguals at different moments in time. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of Cognitive Psychology, Psycholinguistics, Multilingualism and Applied Linguistics, Cognitive and Computational Linguistics, and Critical Metaphor Analysis
