    The book describes the fate of Poles in the German Imperial Army during the First World War. Poland did not exist for over a hundred years on the political map of Europe at that time, and the Poles had to fight for the opposite sides of the conflict: Germany, Austria, and Russia. In the German army, regiments recruited in Poznań, Upper Silesia, Masuria, and Eastern Pomerania were considered as “Polish.” They were sent to the Western front and participated in the great battles of Arras, Verdun, and the Somme. Poles were also present on the Eastern front, in the Balkans, on the Italian front, and even in the colonies. An important part of the forgotten history of Poles in the Kaiser’s army was the relationship between Polish soldiers and German officers. In regiments recruited on the Polish soil, it was common to use the Polish language, and from 1917 Poles deserted to the Polish Army formed in France.

    Die Beiträge dieses Bandes untersuchen aus einem angewandt-gesprächsanalytischen Zugriff wissensbezogene Aushandlungsprozesse in Gesprächen von Institutionenvertreter/innen mit Klient/innen und ihren Zusammenhang mit institutionellen Aufgaben und Zielen sowie den sozialen Rollen der Interagierenden. Wissen ist in solchen Gesprächen allgegenwärtig: Es bildet in vielfältiger Weise Grundlage und Gesprächsinhalte für professionelles berufliches Handeln und entpuppt sich als interaktional außerordentlich komplex. Die Untersuchung von wissensbezogenen interaktionalen Praktiken, z. B. Praktiken des Wissenstransfers, eröffnet neue Perspektiven auf die institutionelle Praxis. Sie dient damit der – aus angewandter Perspektive angestrebten – Optimierung wissensbezogener kommunikativer Prozesse.

Der Fokus dieses Bandes liegt auf der Kommunikation in Foto-Communitys, insbesondere auf den beiden kommunikativen Praktiken des Social Taggings und des Verfassens von Notizen innerhalb von Bildern. Bei den Tags stehen semantische Text-Bild-Relationen im Vordergrund: Tags dienen der Wissensrepräsentation, eine adäquate Versprachlichung der Bilder ist folglich unabdingbar. Notizen-Bild-Relationen sind aus pragmatischer Perspektive von Interesse: Die Informationen eines Kommunikats werden komplementär auf Text und Bild verteilt, was sich in verschiedenen sprachlichen Phänomenen niederschlägt. Ein diachroner Vergleich mit der Postkartenkommunikation sowie ein Exkurs zur Kommunikation mit Emojis runden das Buch ab.

    Das Buch thematisiert phraseologische Irregularitäten, also Phraseme, die strukturelle oder semantische Abweichungen gegenüber dem freien Sprachgebrauch aufweisen. Der Autor zeigt systematisch deren Vielfalt auf, wertet ihren tatsächlichen Gebrauch mithilfe von Korpusanalysen aus und reflektiert ihre Spezifika aus sprachnorm- und sprachwandeltheoretischer sowie konstruktionsgrammatischer Perspektive. Er kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass phraseologische Irregularitäten innerhalb der Phraseologie beziehungsweise der formelhaften Sprache keine Randstellung einnehmen. Ihr irregulärer Charakter muss daher aus verschiedenen Blickrichtungen relativiert werden.

    Why is the Isle of Dogs in the Thames called Isle of Dogs? Did King Canute’s men bring English usage back to Jutland? How can we find out where English speakers suck their breath in to give a short response? And what did the Brontës do about dialect and think about foreign languages? The answers are in this collection of empirical work on English past and present in honour of Nils-Lennart Johannesson, Professor of English Language at Stockholm University. The first five chapters report individual studies forming an overview of current issues in the study of Old and Middle English phonology, lexis and syntax. The next six look at Early Modern and Modern English from a historical point of view, using data from corpora, manuscript archives, and fiction. Two more look at the Old English scholar JRR Tolkien and his work. The remaining chapters discuss aspects of Modern English. Several use corpora to look at English usage in itself or in relation to Swedish, French, or Norwegian. The last three look at grammatical models, the pragmatics of second language use, and modern English semantics.

    En écrivant Les Belles Infidèles il y a plus de soixante ans, Georges Mounin a voulu proposer, selon ses propres termes, « une défense et illustration de l'art de traduire ». II a su réaliser son projet avec une rigueur de démonstration peu commune, une documentation historique exemplaire et, par-dessus tout, une vision magistrale de la traduction. Non seulement cette vision envisage tous les aspects fondamentaux de la traduction, mais elle réussit à faire converger différents points de vue vers la solution des problèmes: celui du philologue, de l'historien et du linguiste, comme celui des traducteurs eux-memes et celui des théoriciens de la traduction. « Il ne s'agit pas de démontrer que la traduction soit facile, ni toujours à tout coup possible et parfaite du premier coup. Ce serait déjà beau d'avoir combattu cette maladie qui paralyse les traducteurs eux-mémes avant d'avoir commnencé leur tâche : la conviction séculaire qu'ils entreprennent une tâche théoriquement impossible », écrivait l'auteur.     En écrivant Les Belles Infidèles il y a plus de soixante ans, Georges Mounin a voulu proposer, selon ses propres termes, « une défense et illustration de l'art de traduire ». II a su réaliser son projet avec une rigueur de démonstration peu commune, une documentation historique exemplaire et, par-dessus tout, une vision magistrale de la traduction. Non seulement cette vision envisage tous les aspects fondamentaux de la traduction, mais elle réussit à faire converger différents points de vue vers la solution des problèmes: celui du philologue, de l'historien et du linguiste, comme celui des traducteurs eux-memes et celui des théoriciens de la traduction. « Il ne s'agit pas de démontrer que la traduction soit facile, ni toujours à tout coup possible et parfaite du premier coup. Ce serait déjà beau d'avoir combattu cette maladie qui paralyse les traducteurs eux-mémes avant d'avoir commnencé leur tâche : la conviction séculaire qu'ils entreprennent une tâche théoriquement impossible », écrivait l'auteur.     This open access book presents an interdisciplinary approach to reveal biases in English news articles reporting on a given political event. The approach named person-oriented framing analysis identifies the coverage's different perspectives on the event by assessing how articles portray the persons involved in the event. In contrast to prior automated approaches, the identified frames are more meaningful and substantially present in person-oriented news coverage.The book is structured in seven chapters: Chapter 1 presents a few of the severe problems caused by slanted news coverage and identifies the research gap that motivated the research described in this thesis. Chapter 2 discusses manual analysis concepts and exemplary studies from the social sciences and automated approaches, mostly from computer science and computational linguistics, to analyze and reveal media bias. This way, it identifies the strengths and weaknesses of current approaches for identifying and revealing media bias. Chapter 3 discusses the solution design space to address the identified research gap and introduces person-oriented framing analysis (PFA), a new approach to identify substantial frames and to reveal slanted news coverage. Chapters 4 and 5 detail target concept analysis and frame identification, the first and second component of PFA. Chapter 5 also introduces the first large-scale dataset and a novel model for target-dependent sentiment classification (TSC) in the news domain. Eventually, Chapter 6 introduces Newsalyze, a prototype system to reveal biases to non-expert news consumers by using the PFA approach. In the end, Chapter 7 summarizes the thesis and discusses the strengths and weaknesses of the thesis to derive ideas for future research on media bias.This book mainly targets researchers and graduate students from computer science, computational linguistics, political science, and further social sciences who want to get an overview of the relevant state of the art in the other related disciplines and understand and tackle the issue of bias from a more effective, interdisciplinary viewpoint
