However, while there is no human life, culture, or action without a specific location functioning as its setting, people go much further than this bare fact in attributing meaning and value to their physical environment. 'Landscape’ denotes this symbolic conception and use of terrain. It is a creation of human culture. In Valuing Landscape we explore different ways in which physical environments impacted on the cultural imagination of Greco-Roman Antiquity. In seventeen chapters with different disciplinary perspectives, we demonstrate the values attached to mountains, the underworld, sacred landscapes, and battlefields, and the evaluations of locale connected with migration, exile, and travel

    "To Midwesterners tucked into small towns or farms early in the twentieth century, the landscape of the American heartland reached the horizon--and then imagination had to provide what lay beyond. But when aviation took off and scenes of the Midwest were no longer earthbound, the Midwestern landscape was transformed and with it, Jason Weems suggests in this book, the very idea of the Midwest itself. Barnstorming the Prairies offers a panoramic vista of the transformative nature and power of the aerial vision that remade the Midwest in the wake of the airplane. This new perspective from above enabled Americans to conceptualize the region as something other than isolated and unchanging, and to see it instead as a dynamic space where people worked to harmonize the core traditions of America's agrarian character with the more abstract forms of twentieth-century modernity. In the maps and aerial survey photography of the Midwest, as well as the painting, cinema, animation, and suburban landscapes that arose through flight, Weems also finds a different and provocative view of modernity in the making. In representations of the Midwest, from Grant Wood's iconic images to the Prairie style of Frank Lloyd Wright to the design of greenbelt suburbs, Weems reveals aerial vision's fundamental contribution to regional identity--to Midwesternness as we understand it.     Picturesque Literature and the Transformation of the American Landcape, 1835-1874 recovers the central role that the picturesque, a popular mode of scenery appreciation that advocated for an improved and manipulated natural landscape, played in the social, spatial, and literary history of mid-nineteenth century America. It argues that the picturesque was not simply a landscape aesthetic, but also a discipline of seeing and imaginatively shaping the natural that was widely embraced by bourgeois Americans to transform the national landscape in their own image. Through the picturesque, mid-century bourgeois Americans remade rural spaces into tourist scenery, celebrated the city streets as spaces of cultural diversity, created new urban public parks, and made0suburban domesticity a national ideal. This picturesque transformation was promoted in a variety of popular literary genres, all focused on landscape description and all of which trained readers into the protocols of picturesque visual discipline as social reform. Many of these genres have since been dubbed "minor" or have been forgotten by our literary history, but the ranks of the writers of this picturesque literature include everyone from the most canonical (Hawthorne, Melville, Thoreau, Emerson, and Poe), to major authors of the period now less familiar (such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Lydia Maria Child, Nathaniel Parker Willis, and Margaret Fuller), to those now completely forgotten. Individual chapters of the book link picturesque literary genres to the spaces that the genres helped to transform and, in the process, create what is recognizably our modern American landscape "This book recovers the central role that the picturesque, a popular mode of scenery appreciation that advocated for an improved and manipulated natural landscape, played in the social, spatial, and literary history of mid-nineteenth century America. Sie lässt sich gerade nicht auf das Geo-graphische ihrer Reliefs reduzieren, auf die Arten ihrer Gesteine, Gewächse oder Gewässer, schon deshalb nicht, weil die Himmel mit ihren wechselnden Wettern, Lichtern und Dunkelheiten, ihren Kälte- und Wärmeströmungen, die Erden mit ihren Nässen und Dürren, Überflutungen und Erschütterungen, Versumpfungen und Verwüstungen je mit zur Erscheinung der Landschaften gehören. Vor allem aber tauchen Landschaften dort auf, wo die Länder auf bestimmte Weise entgrenzt werden: Sie überschreiten nicht nur die Orte ins Ortlose, die Wege ins Weglose, sondern sie transzendieren die Beschränkungen auf das Nahe und Enge, Niedrige und Flächige, um sich, über die Horizonte hinweg, schlechthin der Ferne zu, der Weite, der Höhe, der Tiefe zu öffnen. Gleichwohl sind Landschaften nicht grenzenlos, sie gestalten sich sogar zu gleitenden individuellen Besonderheiten. - Ein Landstrich mag uns vertraut und zur Heimat werden, Landschaften aber strahlen in ihrer Freie stets eine geheimnisvolle Fremdheit aus. Hans-Dieter Bahr geht dem Verstehen der Landschaft in der europäischen Tradition nach, um ihre grundlegende Differenz hervorzuheben zum Land mit seinen bestimmten Gebieten, zum Territorium, von dem schon das römische Recht erklärte, es bestehe aus 'terra' und 'terror', und zumal auch zu den 'Öko-Systemen' des 'Landschafts- und Naturschutzes'. So erst wird sie als das Freie im Blick auf ihre verschiedensten Horizonte verständlich werden. Hans-Dieter Bahr lehrte von 1970 bis 2000 Philosophie in Berlin, Bremen, Mailand und Wien.

    "In 2001 the Chinese government announced that the precise location of Shangrila--a place that previously had existed only in fiction--had been identified in Zhongdian County, Yunnan. Since then, Sino-Tibetan borderlands in Yunnan, Sichuan, Gansu, Qinghai, and the Tibet Autonomous Region have been the sites of numerous state projects of tourism development and nature conservation, which have in turn attracted throngs of backpackers, environmentalists, and entrepreneurs who seek to experience, protect, and profit from the region's landscapes. Mapping Shangrila advances a view of landscapes as media of governance, representation, and resistance, examining how they are reshaping cultural economies, political ecologies of resource use, subjectivities, and interethnic relations. Chapters illuminate topics such as the role of Han and Tibetan literary representations of border landscapes in the formation of ethnic identities; the remaking of Chinese national geographic imaginaries through tourism in the Yading Nature Reserve; the role of The Nature Conservancy and other transnational environmental organizations in struggles over culture and environmental governance; the way in which matsutake mushroom and caterpillar fungus commodity chains are reshaping montane landscapes; and contestations over the changing roles of mountain deities and their mediums as both interact with increasingly intensive nature conservation and state-sponsored capitalism. Emily T.
