Mizrahi, an Egyptian Jew with Italian nationality, established himself as a prolific director of popular comedies and musicals in the 1930s and 1940s. As a studio owner and producer, Mizrahi promoted the idea that developing a local cinema industry was a project of national importance. Togo Mizrahi and the Making of Egyptian Cinema integrates film analysis with film history to tease out the cultural and political implications of Mizrahi’s work. His movies, Starr argues, subvert dominant notions of race, gender, and nationality through their playful—and queer—use of masquerade and mistaken identity.     What did Danes and Swedes in the Middle Ages imagine and write about Jews and Judaism? This book draws on over 100 medieval Danish and Swedish manuscripts and incunabula as well as runic inscriptions and religious art (c. 1200-1515) to answer this question. There were no resident Jews in Scandinavia before the modern period, yet as this book shows ideas and fantasies about them appear to have been widespread and an integral part of life and culture in the medieval North. Volume 1 investigates the possibility of encounters between Scandinavians and Jews, the terminology used to write about Jews, Judaism, and Hebrew, and how Christian writers imagined the Jewish body. The (mis)use of Jews in different texts, especially miracle tales, exempla, sermons, and Passion treaties, is examined to show how writers employed the figure of the Jew to address doubts concerning doctrine and heresy, fears of violence and mass death, and questions of emotions and sexuality. Volume 2 contains diplomatic editions of 54 texts in Old Danish and Swedish together with translations into English that make these sources available to an international audience for the first time and demonstrate how the image of the Jew was created in medieval Scandinavia

    "Examining connections between Jewish American authors and Jewish authors elsewhere in America, Europe, and Israel, this book explores a concept of authorial affiliation that emphasizes how writers intentionally highlight their connections with other writers. Starting with Philip Roth as a catalyst, David Hadar reveals a larger network of authors involved in formations of Jewish American literary identity, including among others Cynthia Ozick, Saul Bellow, Nicole Krauss, and Nathan Englander. Whether it's incorporating other writers into fictional work as characters, interviewing them, publishing critical essays about them, or invoking them in paratext or publicity, writers use a variety of methods to forge public personas, craft their own identities as artists, and infuse their art with meaningful cultural associations. Hadar's analysis deepens our understanding of Jewish American and Israeli literature, positioning them in de-centered relation with one another as well as with European writing. Jahrhundert wollte Hutter das Studium des Hebräischen revolutionieren. Getragen von der Idee, dass das biblische Hebräisch als göttliche Ursprache den Weg zur Einheit von Sprache und Religion aufzeigt, entwickelte er neue didaktische Methoden zur Vereinfachung des Hebräischstudiums. Am Anfang seines Wirkens steht die 1587 in Hamburg veröffentlichte „Biblia Sacra – Derekh ha-Kodesh“. In dieser Edition der Hebräischen Bibel entwickelte er ein bis heute einzigartiges Druckbild, um die Morphologie des Hebräischen zu illustrieren. Weitere Arbeiten folgten, u.a. Lexika und Polyglotten, in denen Hutter das Sprachenstudium mit seiner These von der einheitsstiftenden göttlichen Ursprache verband. Sein Werk ist somit im Grenzbereich zwischen neuzeitlicher Sprachwissenschaft und religiöser Spekulation einzuordnen. Der historische Vergleich zeigt, dass er ein Vertreter der frühneuzeitlichen christlichen Hebraistik ist und kein „Phantast“ seiner Zeit war.Die Publikation führt nicht nur in Hutters Werk ein, sondern bietet zudem einen Überblick über Methoden und Konzeptionen der frühneuzeitlichen christlichen Hebraistik Elias Hutter was interested in the unity of language and religion, about which he wrote an impressive magnum opus in the late sixteenth century. He believed that Hebrew, as the original divine language, was the answer to his question, and wanted to revolutionize its study. To do so, he developed new methods for language pedagogy in combination with theological concepts, which this publication introduces and places within their historic context

    "Examining connections between Jewish American authors and Jewish authors elsewhere in America, Europe, and Israel, this book explores a concept of authorial affiliation that emphasizes how writers intentionally highlight their connections with other writers. Starting with Philip Roth as a catalyst, David Hadar reveals a larger network of authors involved in formations of Jewish American literary identity, including among others Cynthia Ozick, Saul Bellow, Nicole Krauss, and Nathan Englander. Whether it's incorporating other writers into fictional work as characters, interviewing them, publishing critical essays about them, or invoking them in paratext or publicity, writers use a variety of methods to forge public personas, craft their own identities as artists, and infuse their art with meaningful cultural associations. Hadar's analysis deepens our understanding of Jewish American and Israeli literature, positioning them in de-centered relation with one another as well as with European writing.     An original investigation into the reading strategies and uses of books by Jews in the Soviet era. In The Soviet Jewish Bookshelf, Marat Grinberg argues that in an environment where Judaism had been all but destroyed, and a public Jewish presence routinely delegitimized, reading uniquely provided many Soviet Jews with an entry to communal memory and identity. The bookshelf was both a depository of selective Jewish knowledge and often the only conspicuously Jewish presence in their homes. The typical Soviet Jewish bookshelf consisted of a few translated works from Hebrew and numerous translations from Yiddish and German as well as Russian books with both noticeable and subterranean Jewish content. Such volumes, officially published, and not intended solely for a Jewish audience, afforded an opportunity for Soviet Jews to indulge insubordinate feelings in a largely safe manner. Grinberg is interested in pinpointing and decoding the complex reading strategies and the specifically Jewish uses to which the books on the Soviet Jewish bookshelf were put. He reveals that not only Jews read them, but Jews read them in a specific way

    A genre-defying book from one of France's most well-known philosopher-writers. In the Lower Saxony region of northwestern Germany sits the city of Osnabruck. This is where, in 1648, the Peace of Westphalia was signed, bringing the Thirty Years' War and one of the most calamitous periods of European history to an end. But the city was later to witness another calamity. Today, as one walks through Old Synagogue Street in a rich neighborhood of Osnabruck, one might miss noticing a pile of pale stones held together by chicken wire that sits between two fashionable homes. These are the well-kept ruins from behind which stares a gaping space-a place of memory and oblivion. Four polished plaques tell the tale of the horror-filled night of November 9, 1938-today known as Kristallnacht-when the synagogue that had stood on this spot was desecrated, looted, set on fire, and eventually demolished by Hitler's forces. On the same day, ninety parishioners were imprisoned by the Gestapo and eventually sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp. Osnabruck was also home to Eve Klein, a member of the city's early-twentieth-century Jewish community and the mother of author Helene Cixous. In Well-Kept Ruins, Cixous returns to the historic city in 2019 and reflects on the remains of the synagogue that "express the life lost, the life kept." Walking the streets of the city, plumbing the depths of the past along with her own family's history, looking deep into the future, and punctuating her poetic prose with haunting photographs, Cixous explores the ruins at the heart of humanity. Part memoir, part philosophical meditation, Well-Kept Ruins is a genre-defying and timely reflection of the contemporary human condition
