Henry James criticized the impressionism which was revolutionizing French painting and French fiction, and satirized the British aesthetic movement, which championed impressionist criticism. Yet time and again he used the word 'impression' to represent the most intense moments of consciousness of his characters, as well as the work of the literary artist. Henry James and the Art of Impressions argues that the literary art of the impression, as James practised it, places his work within the wider cultural history of impressionism, and means that his work stands outside that history and challenges its very terms. 0'Henry James and the Art of Impressions' offers an unprecedentedly detailed cultural and intellectual history of the impression. It draws on philosophy, psychology, literature, critical theory, and the visual arts to study James's early art criticism, literary criticism, travel writing, prefaces, and the three great novels of his major phase,The Ambassadors,The Wings of the Dove, and The Golden Bowl. It argues that coherent philosophical meanings of the Jamesian impression emerge when they are comprehended as a family of related ideas about perception, imagination, and aesthetics - bound together by James's attempt to reconcile the novel's value as a mimetic form with its value as a transformative creative activity. 0'Henry James and the Art of Impressions' traces the development of the impression across a range of disciplines to show the cultural and intellectual debts James's use of the word owes them. It offers a more philosophical account of James to complement the more historicist work of recent decades

In this book, Jessica Berman claims that modernist fiction engages directly with early twentieth-century transformations of community and cosmopolitanism. Although modernist writers develop radically different models for social organization, their writings return repeatedly to issues of commonality and shared voice, particularly in relation to dominant discourses of gender and nationality

Charles Caramello argues that Henry James and Gertrude Stein performed biographical acts in two senses of the phrase: they wrote biography, but as a cover for autobiography. Constructing literary genealogies while creating original literary forms, they used their biographical portraits of precursors and contemporaries to portray themselves as exemplary modern artists. In doing so, they actually became exemplars, and Caramello treats them not only as artists, as developers of modernist portraiture, but also as types, as emblems in an ideal history of modernism. Caramello advances his argument through close readings of four works that explore themes of artistry and influence and that experiment with forms of biographical portraiture: James's early biography of Nathaniel Hawthorne and his much later group biography, William Wetmore Story and his Friends, and Stein's celebrated Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas and her largely forgotten Four in America, which comprises biographies of Ulysses S. Grant, Wilbur Wright, Henry James, and George Washington. As Caramello shows, James and Stein portrayed artistic exemplarity in terms broader than the aesthetic. In Hawthorne, James linked his precursor's romantic art and his conservative politics, presented Hawthorne as uncritical in both arenas, and, implicity, proferred himself as a critical thinker of modern artistic principles and progressive social vision. He repeated the maneuver, with complex variations, in the more overtly political William Wetmore Story. In the Autobiography and in Four in America, Stein explored how patriarchy produces and enshrines masculine art, just as it produces and enshrines masculine cultural icons, and she proferred her art and herself, in counterpoint, as lesbian and feminist

'Characters' are those fictive beings in novels whose coherent patterns of behaviour make them credible as people. 'Character' is also used to refer to the capacity - or incapacity - to sustain one's core principles. What is behind this esteem for unwavering consistency? 'Out of Character' examines literary characters who test and defy our culture's models of personal integrity

Among many types of life-writing genres that recently have not only become central to contemporary academic discourse, but also attracted wide readership, the biographical novel deserves special attention. Authors on Authors examines biographical-novel-about-a-writer - a sub-genre of biographical novel which takes a real writer and his/her life story as the subject matter for imaginative exploration. The study identifies all the major examples of the genre written in English between 1990 and 2010, while discussing a variety of approaches and methods used by contemporary authors in rewriting the lives of other authors. An original taxonomy of the genre based on Gerard Genette's Palimpsests is introduced in this work, following a claim that life and, consequently, life-writing are derivational practices and as such are inherently intertextual and ontologically palimpsestuous. Seen as the most representative and accomplished achievements of the genre, four specific attempts at a biographical-novel-about-a-writer (Author, Author by David Lodge, The Master by Colm Tóibín, The Hours by Michael Cunningham and The Master of Petersburg by J.M. Coetzee) are singled out for an in-depth analysis in this multi-dimensional study which works dialectically across the borders of history, biography, literary criticism, philosophy and textual analysis

Description based on print version record

'Henry James and the Poetics of Duplicity' aims to advance the field of studies on the life and work of Henry James by fully exploring the author's use of duplicity, one of the key literary and rhetorical strategies within the author's vast andinfamous arsenal of techniques of 'ambiguity'. The collection brings together essays by both long established and more recent Jamesian scholars from 11 different countries, the collective work of whom, through this publication, further enhances our grasp of the ever-elusive literary style of Hnry James
