    1. Introduction -- 2. Gender and its complexities -- 3. Human rights and gender: the first stage -- 4. Feminist approaches, gay and lesbian studies, queer theory: their engagement with gender and human rights -- 5. Human rights and gender: the second stage -- 6. Successes and challenges: right to be free from violence -- 7. Successes and challenges: culture and human rights -- 8. Successes and challenges: family and human rights -- 9. General conclusions. This unique book analyses the impact of international human rights on the concept of gender, demonstrating that gender emerged in the medical study of sexuality and has a complex and broad meaning beyond the sex and gender binaries often assumed by human rights law. The book illustrates which dynamics within the field of human rights hinder the expansion of the concept of gender beyond binaries and which strategies and mechanisms allow and facilitate such an expansion

Megan Faragher explores the influence that public opinion polling, and the developing idea of a public consciousness in the British mid-century, had upon the literature of the period. She traces the emergence and growing dominance of public opinion research in cultural and governmental bodies, and the ways in which it came to be aestheticized by British writers.

The Kalpavṛkṣa was composed in the 17th century by the Kashmirian author Sāhib Kaul and is edited here in its original Sanskrit for the first time. During the editing process it became clear that the "text" of the Kalpavṛkṣa is only the basis of an elaborate piece of verbal art, a crossword-like carmen cancellatum, which was originally displayed on a large cloth. Three of these are preserved today. The Kalpavṛkṣa is not only the largest carmen cancellatum known in world literature, with its roughly thirty languages used for its intexts, it is also displays a baffling multilingualism.

Is Peace Possible?; Conclusion; Notes; Index Europe has long imagined itself as the centre of the universe, although its precise geographical, cultural and social terrains have always been amorphous. Exploring the fear and fascination associated with the continent as an allegory, Hamid Dabashi considers Europe to be a historically formed barricade against the world.0Frantz Fanon's assessment that "Europe is literally the creation of the Third World" is still true today; but in more than one sense for the colonial has always been embedded in the capital, and the capital within the colonial. As the condition of coloniality shifts, so have the dividing lines between coloniser and colonised, and this shift calls for a reappraisal of our understanding of nationalism, xenophobia and sectarianism as the dangerous indices of the emerging worlds.0As the far-right populists captivate minds across Europe and Brexit upsets the balance of power in the European Union, this book, from a major scholar of postcolonial thought, is a timely and transformative intervention

Teachers --Imitation --Five texts --True or false --Strategies in prose --Originality --More matter --Students --Addenda, Corrigenda. In this new contribution to Yale University Press's Why X Matters series, a distinguished writer and scholar tackles central questions of the discipline of writing. Drawing on his own experience with mentors such as John Updike, John Gardner, and James Baldwin, and in turn having taught such rising stars as Jesmyn Ward, Delbanco looks in particular at questions of influence and the contradictory, simultaneous impulses toward imitation and originality. Part memoir, part literary history, and part analysis, this unique text will resonate with students, writers, writing teachers, and bibliophiles

"'We've finished the earthly tsars and we're coming for the heavenly ones!' Thus spoke the Soviet Union's first atheist propagandists as they declared war on "the opium of the people" across the USSR. Soviet atheism is the great lost subject of the 20th century. Pope Pius XI led a "crusade of prayer" against it; George Orwell satirized it in Animal Farm; the Nazis called it a Jewish plot; Franklin D. Roosevelt pressured Stalin to abandon it: Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn blamed it for Russia's catastrophes; and Ronald Reagan put it at the core of his "Evil Empire" speech. And yet, because the Soviet Union promoted atheism almost entirely for domestic consumption, decades' worth of arcane and astonishing anti-religious imagery remains unknown in the West. Drawing on the early Soviet atheist magazines Godless and Godless at the Machine, and postwar posters by Communist Party publishers, author Roland Elliott Brown presents an unsettling tour of atheist ideology in the USSR. Here are uncanny, imaginative and downright blasphemous visions from the very guts of the Soviet atheist apparatus: sinister priests rub shoulders with cross-bearing colonial torturers, greedy mullahs, a cyclopean Jehovah and a crypto-fascist Jesus; Russian cosmonauts mock God from space while vigilant border guards nab American Bible smugglers. Godless Utopia is the occult grimoire of a lost socialist anti-theology."--Provided by publisher

"This collection seeks to understand why it is important not just to continue to tell queer stories on stage, but also to piece together the larger historical narrative of Canadian queer theatrical production and reception through academic research. Contributors include Kym Bird, Sky Gilbert, Moynan King, Evalyn Parry, Richie Wilcox, Jay Whitehead, T. Berto, Eury Chang, Cameron Crookston, Spy Dénommé-Welch, Dirk Gindt, Stephen Low, Sean Metzger, Cordula Quint, Trish Salah, Sarah Garton Stanley, and Laine Zisman Newman. Through their essays, artist reflections, and curatorial statements, they generate theory and new ways of understanding how queer theatre and performance have contributed more broadly to the political and social development of LGBT2Q communities in Canada."--

"What if the impossible was actually possible? What if we turned our dreams into action? What if your imagination could help solve real-world crises, like war, famine, and human rights violations? Through a series of seemingly whimsical questions, this middle-grade nonfiction book introduces readers to people and organizations that are subverting violence, war and totalitarian power. What if soldiers refused to carry weapons? What if fighter pilots dropped seeds instead of bombs? What if music could be a creative force for democracy? None of these ideas are impossible--in fact, they are all true historical examples of ideas that have been put into action. Accessible, engaging text introduces a different question and example on each spread. Evocative concept illustrations provide a light-hearted reminder of the power of imagination. This timely book encourages readers to think critically and dare to ask big questions: that might just change the world."--

This book addresses a simple question: why were the Anglo-Saxons obsessed with monsters, many of which did not exist? Drawing on literature and art, theology, and a wealth of firsthand evidence, Basilisks and Beowulf reveals a people huddled at the edge of the known map, using the fantastic and the grotesque as a way of understanding the world around them and their place within it. For the Anglo-Saxons, monsters helped to distinguish the sacred and the profane; they carried God's message to mankind, exposing His divine hand in creation itself. At the same time, monsters were agents of disorder, seeking to kill people, conquer their lands, and even challenge what it meant to be human. Learning about where monsters lived and how they behaved allowed the Anglo-Saxons to situate themselves in the world, as well as to apprehend something of the divine plan. It is for these reasons that monsters were at the very center of their worldview. From map monsters to demons, dragons to Leviathan, we neglect these beasts at our peril

As an introduction to this collection of essays on the Brontë sisters - Charlotte, Emily, and Anne - Jeremy Tambling presents a "self-interview" in which he asks himself (and then answers) the kinds of questions that might occur to anyone new to, or simply interested in, the Brontës. Why are they worth reading? What kinds of approaches to them are most helpful? Are there any particular scholarly works about them that seem especially worth consulting? Are they still "relevant"? And so on. In an engaging first-person account of his own growing interest in the Brontës and their writings, Tambling offers readers a genuinely inviting introduction. His "self-interview" is then followed by a brief biography of the Brontës by the volume<U+2019>s editor. (Publisher)

Entering Eden -- The Garden of Consolation -- The wild garden -- The Gharsa Baqqali -- Wild flowers of Northern Morocco -- The true garden -- Plant list. A lovingly photographed tour of internationally renowned writer Umberto Pasti's famous hillside garden in Morocco. Italian writer and horticulturist Umberto Pasti's passion for the wild flora of Tangier and its surrounding region led him to create his world-famous garden, Rohuna, where he has transplanted thousands of plants rescued from construction sites with the aid of men from the village. Planted between two small houses is the Garden of Consolation: a series of rooms and terraces with lush vegetation, some rendering homage to the paintings of Henri Rousseau, others inspired by invented characters. Surrounding the Garden of Consolation are the Wild Garden and a hillside devoted to the wild flowering bulbs of northern Morocco, where indigenous species of narcissus, iris, crocus, scilla, gladiolus, and others bloom. With its stunning vistas and verdant fields, Rohuna is a garden of incomparable beauty with the mission to preserve the botanical richness of the region. Captured here in detail by celebrated photographer Ngoc Minh Ngo, the poetic beauty of this special and unique place is lovingly rendered for all the world to see and share

(Publisher)
