    This dissertation uses digital humanities methods and computational linguistic tools to perform a sentiment analysis on a corpus of 18th century Moravian English personal memoirs. This historical corpus contains important similarities to modern natural language text, requiring similar computational tools and approaches. The methodology of this sentiment analysis, considering the human social and cultural context in the design and implementation process of computational tools has compelling relevance to modern society and computing. The Moravian "Lebenslauf" or memoir represents a unique autobiographical genre, providing rare insight into social and personal lives of individuals living in an 18th century historical community. Sentiment analysis was performed using a custom lexicon and rule-based approach, adapting existing technology to a challenging and previously untested domain. Several different methods of sentiment scoring, analysis, and visualization were used, including narrative trendlines, word frequency, topic identification, and comparison of changing sentiment across time. Results reflect historical Moravian society, some community specific and others timeless and universally relatable as human feelings, and concepts. Split positive and negative sentiment is associated with illness and death, reflecting a positive perception as Moravians compared personal suffering to suffering of Christ during the passion while death meant salvation and "going home". Increasing life expectancy and decreasing young deaths from infectious disease, correlated with increasing negative sentiment, and decreasing positive sentiment associated with illness and death. Analysis by gender reflected unique Moravian gender constructs in 18th century Moravian society, often affecting sentiment. Moravian "blood and wounds" theology, peaking from the 1730s-1750s was detected using topic-specific sentiment vocabulary. Methodology relied on consideration of human social and cultural context and awareness of possible bias and limitations in computational tools during design, implantation, and analysis. These considerations in design allowed for creation of better domain-adapted tools. This methodology is directly relevant and consequential to modern computing problems involving interaction with human context, including serious concerns about ethics, privacy, and bias associated with computational tools and algorithms. Similar methodological approaches considering human context in computational design, implantation, and use can greatly improve future computational technology as it becomes increasingly indispensable to modern society.

    In the context of the Holocaust, Technology, and Culture, my interest in digital artifacts led me to recognize three key factors that mutually influence aspects of knowledge and understanding across each of those area: access, agency, and action. In today's technology-driven era, 'books' are no longer a 'fixed' form. Studying Holocaust Literature as an artifact is one way to bring together enabling technologies for scholarly exploration and civic engagement about the Holocaust. To catalyze interest in Holocaust Literature, I examined contemporary authors' initial responses to the Holocaust as they relate to Holocaust-related Literature. My case study methodology details relationships within and across three independent and interlinked pairs of selected books: Miklos Radnoti's Tajtekos eg and Zsuzsanna Ozsvath's In the Footsteps of Orpheus: The Life and Times of Miklos Radnoti; Anne Frank's Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, and David Barnouw's The Phenomenon of Anne Frank; the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion, and Steven Jacobs and Mark Weitzman's Dismantling the Big Lie: The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. The results demonstrate how an educational framework can be used to effect change by fostering a shift in how we see images, how we read words, and in computational representation.

    In chapter 1, I study the experimentation dynamics of a decision maker (DM) in a two-armed bandit setup ([5]), where the agent holds ambiguous beliefs regarding the distribution of the return process of one arm and is certain about the other one. The DM entertains Multiplier preferences a la [27], thus I frame the decision making environment as a two player differential game against nature in continuous time. I characterize the DM’s value function and her optimal experimentation strategy that turns out to follow a cut-off rule with respect to her belief process. The belief threshold for exploring the ambiguous arm is found in closed form and is shown to be increasing with respect to the ambiguity aversion index. I then study the effect of provision of an unambiguous information source about the ambiguous arm. Interestingly, I show that the exploration threshold rises unambiguously as a result of this new information source, thereby leading to more conservatism. This analysis also sheds light on the efficient time to reach for an expert opinion. The results of this chapter has been recently published in [61].In chapter 2, I introduce a dynamic model of random search where ex ante heterogeneous venture capitalists (investors) with unknown abilities match with a variety of startups (projects). There is incomplete yet symmetric information about investors’ types, whereas the projects’ types are publicly observable to all investors. In the unique stationary equilibrium, the matching sets, value functions and steady state distributions are endogenously determined. Interpreting the market posterior belief about the venture capitalists’ ability as their reputation, I study the outcomes of the economy when the success or failure of the projects create feedback effects: innovation spillovers and reputational externalities. When there are positive spillovers from successful early stage projects to late stage business opportunities, I show increased levels of search frictions could save the market from breakdown caused by the neglect of spillover effect. When the reputational externality is at play, namely when the deal flow of each investor is inversely impacted by the distribution of other investors’ reputation, I show the proportion of the high ability inactive investors is inefficiently high, and the projects suffer from early termination.

    In the context of the Holocaust, Technology, and Culture, my interest in digital artifacts led me to recognize three key factors that mutually influence aspects of knowledge and understanding across each of those area: access, agency, and action. In today's technology-driven era, 'books' are no longer a 'fixed' form. Studying Holocaust Literature as an artifact is one way to bring together enabling technologies for scholarly exploration and civic engagement about the Holocaust. To catalyze interest in Holocaust Literature, I examined contemporary authors' initial responses to the Holocaust as they relate to Holocaust-related Literature. My case study methodology details relationships within and across three independent and interlinked pairs of selected books: Miklos Radnoti's Tajtekos eg and Zsuzsanna Ozsvath's In the Footsteps of Orpheus: The Life and Times of Miklos Radnoti; Anne Frank's Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, and David Barnouw's The Phenomenon of Anne Frank; the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion, and Steven Jacobs and Mark Weitzman's Dismantling the Big Lie: The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. The results demonstrate how an educational framework can be used to effect change by fostering a shift in how we see images, how we read words, and in computational representation.

Im Jahre 1993 listete das Yearbook of International Organizations 16.000 international anerkannte NGOs auf, 2004 waren es bereits 63.000. Dieses Wachstum wird von einer erstaunlichen Zunahme der Aktivitäten und Leistungen der auf lokaler und internationaler Ebene arbeitenden NGOs begleitet. Weil sich die Aufgaben von Bibliotheken und NGOs zunehmend überschneiden, müssen beide mehr zusammenarbeiten, um unentbehrliche Dienstleistungen, die auf die Schaffung, Verbreitung und Aufbewahrung von Information ausgerichtet sind, anzubieten. Die acht Aufsätze dieses Bandes widmen sich der gemeinschaftlichen Arbeit von NGOs und Bibliotheken bei der Untersuchung von und Beschlussfassung zu globalen Themen, die von AIDS bis zur Nahrungssicherung und dem sozialen Wandel reichen. Main description: Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are growing exponentially. In 1993, the Yearbook of International Organizations listed 16,000 internationally recognized NGOs. By 2004, this number was 63,000. With this increase comes a staggering growth in the activities and intellectual output of NGOs working on a local and international level. As the mission of both libraries and NGOs increasingly intersect, these organizations must collaborate to provide essential services that revolve around the creation, dissemination, and storage of information. This volume's eight essays focus on collaborative work between NGOs and libraries in the study and resolution of global issues ranging from AIDS to food security, and social transformation.

This Festschrift, prepared and presented to Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Elmar Mittler on the occasion of his 65th birthday, honours his achievements and his influence in Germany and internationally, as a librarian in Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Heidelberg and Göttingen, as an honorary professor, honorary doctor and ordinary, as an author and editor, as an "inspirer, creative thinker and initiator". The list of authors reads like a who's who of both the German and international library worlds, with contributions from culture and academia.     Algorithms are becoming increasingly prevalent in the hiring process. Whether it is a recruiter using LinkedIn's recommendation algorithm to find potential candidates or a hiring manager utilizing a resume screening algorithm to shortlist candidates, algorithms are increasingly used to assist human hiring decisions. These algorithms afford exciting opportunities for improving the efficiency of the hiring process but also pose several challenges along the lines of bias and fairness. This dissertation aims to investigate algorithmic hiring systems, with a particular emphasis on issues of bias, fairness, and diversity. The first chapter examines the interplay between algorithmic fairness constraints and human decision-making in hiring, highlighting the need for algorithms to be complementary to human decision-making. The second chapter studies how supply and demand-side choices in LinkedIn talent sourcing contribute to occupational segregation, contextualizing algorithmic hiring in the broader hiring process. The third chapter demonstrates how advances in machine learning algorithms can provide insight into the mechanisms underlying hiring bias. Finally, the fourth chapter builds on these findings and investigates the design and evaluation of fair resume screening algorithms.
