    Die künstlerische Freiheit von Autoren gilt in der Dialektologie und historischen Sprachwissenschaft gemeinhin als Störfaktor (vergleiche Ebert 1978: 6, Glaser 1997: 15). Möchte man authentisches Sprachmaterial konzeptioneller Mündlichkeit (Koch/Oesterreicher 1985) erforschen, sind Gebrauchstexte poetischen Texten vorzuziehen. Poetische Lizenzen sind jedoch weitaus nützlicher als bislang angenommen. Dieser Beitrag zeigt, wie literarische Texte sowohl für die Sprachgeschichte als auch für die Sprachkontaktforschung gewinnbringend genutzt werden können. Als Datenbasis dienen Texte – vorwiegend Theaterstücke – der deutschsprachigen Literatur des 19. Jahrhunderts, in denen jüdische Figuren sprachlich über die Imitation des Jiddischen charakterisiert werden. Diese Imitationen sind ein kreatives Produkt des deutsch-jiddischen Sprachkontakts und weisen, im künstlichen Raum der poetischen Sprache, Reflexe natürlichsprachlicher Strukturen auf. The artistic freedom of authors is generally regarded as a disturbing factor in dialectology and historical linguistics (see Ebert 1978: 6, Glaser 1997: 15). For the investigation of historical oral communication, the preferable data are functional and not fictional texts. Artistic licence, however, is far more useful than commonly known. This paper shows how literary texts can be used both for linguistic history and for research on language contact. The data base includes poetic texts – predominantly plays – of the German-language literature of the 19th century, in which Jewish figures are characterized linguistically by using imitations of Yiddish. These imitations are a creative product of the contact between German and Yiddish and, in the artificial space of poetic language, exhibit reflexes of natural language structures.

    A bold reconception of ancient Greek drama by one of the most brilliant and original classical scholars of his generationWhen John Winkler died in 1990, he left an unpublished manuscript containing a highly original interpretation of the development and meaning of ancient Greek drama. Rehearsals of Manhood makes this groundbreaking work available for the first time, presenting an entirely novel picture of Greek tragedy and a vivid portrait of the cultural poetics of Athenian manhood.Ancient Athens was a military conclave as well as an urban capital, and male citizens were expected to embody the ideal of the Athenian citizen-soldier. Winkler understands Attic drama as a secular manhood ritual, a collaborative aesthetic and civic enterprise focused on the initiation of boys into manhood and the training, testing, and representation of young male warriors. Past efforts to discover the origins and development of Greek tragedy have largely treated drama as a literary genre, isolating it from other Athenian social practices. Winkler returns Greek tragedy to its social context, showing how it was one among many forms of display and performance cultivated by elite males in ancient Greece.The final work of a celebrated classical scholar, Rehearsals of Manhood highlights the civic function of the dramatic festivals at classical Athens as occasions for the examination and representation of boys on the verge of manhood, and offers a fresh explanation of how dramatic performance fit into the social life and gender politics of the Athenian state

    From a firm’s perspective two competing forces are driving the decision to invest in innovation. On the one hand, innovative performance is an important driver of profitability and growth. On the other hand, investments in innovation suffer from negative externalities, i.e. spillovers to other firms, and hence imitation could be induced. To preempt imitation firms may protect their inventions by means of intellectual property rights, such as patents. By taking out a patent, however, a firm also conveys information about the functioning of the invention to competitors. In this empirical paper, we highlight the trade-off of patenting by setting up a recursive system of equations on knowledge leakage and imitation that, among other factors, may be partly determined by firms’ patenting activity. Thereby we contribute to the debate on the functioning of the contemporary patent system. We find that patenting firms are being less confronted with imitation. The effect of patents on the dissemination of R&D findings is, however, insignificant. Therefore, we conclude that patent disclosures do not significantly harm the appropriability conditions for inventions, but help to protect, at least partly, against imitation, as it has been originally envisaged by policy.

    For early modern authors, the meaning of invention lay between the classical world's omnipresent notion of imitation and what would later become Romantic ideals of genius and originality. In that sense, their era was a transitional phase, smoothing the passage from the classical notion of poetry as imitation to the understanding of literature as the product of the author’s creative imagination and original thought. Yet a great conceptual richness lay in this intermediate position, capturing many of the political, religious and social tensions of the Renaissance.

For me, the fake foliage of the trees draws more attention than camouflage. The often-farcical tower disguises belie the equipment's covert ability to collect all the phone calls and digital information passing through them, to be bought and sold by advertisers and stored by the government. From the very start, cell towers were considered eyesores. Plastic leaves were attached in an attempt to hide the visual pollution. Over time, the disguises evolved from primitive palms and evergreens into more elaborate costumes. The towers now masquerade as flagpoles, crosses, water towers, and cacti. Today, as our demand for five bars of connectivity continues to increase, the charade still persists. I was initially drawn to the towers' whimsical appearances. The more I photographed, the more disconcerted I felt that technology was clandestinely modifying our environment. I explore how this manufactured nature is imposing a contrived aesthetic in our neighborhoods. My photographs expose the towers' idiosyncratic disguises, highlight the variety of forms, and show how ubiquitous they are in our daily lives. Their appearance is now an inescapable part of the iconic western road trip and the eight states that I visited for this project. As the fifth generation (5G) of cellular technology continues to roll out, the cell tower terrain will be changing. 5G utilizes smaller equipment that is easier to hide - think fat streetlight poles. Perhaps elaborately disguised "fauxliage" towers will start disappearing and be considered an anachronism of the early 21st century.     This study deals with the central reflection figure of the fictional in Shakespeare’s history play Henry V: “mockery.” At the core of this analysis is the relation of “mockeries” and “true things” in Henry V. The play makes use of this relation to construe its own poetics, balancing truth and history with imitation and poetry in the sense of fiction. This study examines aspects of communication and translation, the role of the audience, concepts of possibility and necessity, and contextualises the play in early modern discourse on poetry and poetics

    This study deals with the central reflection figure of the fictional in Shakespeare’s history play Henry V: “mockery.” At the core of this analysis is the relation of “mockeries” and “true things” in Henry V. The play makes use of this relation to construe its own poetics, balancing truth and history with imitation and poetry in the sense of fiction. This study examines aspects of communication and translation, the role of the audience, concepts of possibility and necessity, and contextualises the play in early modern discourse on poetry and poetics.
