"In the tumultuous era of the late 1960s and early 70s, several currents of American art and culture coalesced around a broad sensibility that elevated and explored the immediacy of lived experience, whether as an aesthetic or political imperative. But in films set in the historical past, this sensibility acquired complex additional resonances by speaking to the ephemerality of the present moment through a framework of history, myth, nostalgia, and other forms associated with temporal alienation or distance. The Presence of the Past explores the implications of this complex moment in Hollywood cinema through several prominent examples released in the years 1967 to 1974. Key genres are explored in detailed case studies: the outlaw film (Bonnie and Clyde and Badlands), the revisionist Western (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, McCabe and Mrs. Miller), the neo-noir (Chinatown) and the nostalgia film (The Last Picture Show and American Graffiti). In these films, however, "the past" is more than a matter of genre or setting. Rather, it is a richly diverse, often paradoxical concern in its own right, bridging conceptual territories within soundtrack studies, including the sixties pop score, myth criticism, the representation of media technology, and the role of classical music in compilation scoring. Against a broader background of an industry and film culture that were witnessing a stylistic and aesthetic diversification in the use of music and sound design, The Presence of the Past argues for the film-philosophical importance of the soundtrack for cultivating an imagined experiential understanding of the past"--

    Plutôt que les "lieux de mémoire", rendus célèbres par Pierre Nora, ce livre prend pour objet les lieux ordinaires et concrets qui conservent des traces d'histoire qu'il faut parfois bien chercher. Une rue, une place, un bocage, une forêt où l'on s'est battu, des baraquements abandonnés, des grottes dans un désert de cailloux... Le cinéma, art concret de l'image et du son, a vocation à enregistrer ces traces, parfois infimes, qui imposent aux cinéastes d'en construire ou d'en problématiser le récit. Leurs films proposent ainsi aux spectateurs non pas une histoire toute faite mais une histoire en train de s'écrire. La réflexion part ici d'exemples concrets, des films-essais qui interrogent l'histoire tragique du vingtième siècle : la guerre d'Espagne et ses réfugiés ; les mémoires successives d'un camp d'internement ou de la place d'une grande ville ; les effets du débarquement sur les campagnes normandes ; la reconstruction brutaliste qui s'ensuivit, ici ou ailleurs, et le bouleversement de l'architecture urbaine au lendemain de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale ; la déportation des intellectuels chinois dans le désert pendant le "mouvement anti-droitiste"... Dans la plupart des cas, l'amnésie l'emporte, quand ce n'est pas l'histoire officielle des vainqueurs, dans des monuments commémoratifs auquel on oppose ici l'exemple d'un mémorial, celui du camp de Rivesaltes, qui refuse d'être un musée. Le cinéma est un moyen de s'obstiner à conjurer ces impasses mémorielles, à questionner encore et toujours les traces de l'histoire dans ces lieux qui peuvent aussi nous parler de notre présent. Ici témoignent des réalisatrices et un réalisateur (Claire Angelini, Dominique Cabrera, Sandra Ruesga, Mario Pons), partageant leurs créations (un montage d'images, un extrait de scénario), tandis que des historiens et des spécialistes de cinéma abordent leurs films et d'autres de Diane Kurys, Jacqueline Veuve, Robert Vas, Basilio Martin Patino et Wang Bing, ainsi que des bandes d'actualités, sous cette entrée spécifique : la mémoire conservée par les lieux et révélée par le cinéma. --

    Plutôt que les "lieux de mémoire", rendus célèbres par Pierre Nora, ce livre prend pour objet les lieux ordinaires et concrets qui conservent des traces d'histoire qu'il faut parfois bien chercher. Une rue, une place, un bocage, une forêt où l'on s'est battu, des baraquements abandonnés, des grottes dans un désert de cailloux... Le cinéma, art concret de l'image et du son, a vocation à enregistrer ces traces, parfois infimes, qui imposent aux cinéastes d'en construire ou d'en problématiser le récit. Leurs films proposent ainsi aux spectateurs non pas une histoire toute faite mais une histoire en train de s'écrire. La réflexion part ici d'exemples concrets, des films-essais qui interrogent l'histoire tragique du vingtième siècle : la guerre d'Espagne et ses réfugiés ; les mémoires successives d'un camp d'internement ou de la place d'une grande ville ; les effets du débarquement sur les campagnes normandes ; la reconstruction brutaliste qui s'ensuivit, ici ou ailleurs, et le bouleversement de l'architecture urbaine au lendemain de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale ; la déportation des intellectuels chinois dans le désert pendant le "mouvement anti-droitiste"... Dans la plupart des cas, l'amnésie l'emporte, quand ce n'est pas l'histoire officielle des vainqueurs, dans des monuments commémoratifs auquel on oppose ici l'exemple d'un mémorial, celui du camp de Rivesaltes, qui refuse d'être un musée. Le cinéma est un moyen de s'obstiner à conjurer ces impasses mémorielles, à questionner encore et toujours les traces de l'histoire dans ces lieux qui peuvent aussi nous parler de notre présent. Ici témoignent des réalisatrices et un réalisateur (Claire Angelini, Dominique Cabrera, Sandra Ruesga, Mario Pons), partageant leurs créations (un montage d'images, un extrait de scénario), tandis que des historiens et des spécialistes de cinéma abordent leurs films et d'autres de Diane Kurys, Jacqueline Veuve, Robert Vas, Basilio Martin Patino et Wang Bing, ainsi que des bandes d'actualités, sous cette entrée spécifique : la mémoire conservée par les lieux et révélée par le cinéma. --
