In The Black Radical Tragic, Jeremy Matthew Glick examines twentieth-century performances engaging the revolution as laboratories for political thinking. Asking readers to consider the revolution less a fixed event than an ongoing and open-ended history resonating across the work of Atlantic world intellectuals, Glick argues that these writers use the Haitian Revolution as a watershed to chart their own radical political paths, animating, enriching, and framing their artistic and scholarly projects. Die in diesem Buch vorgelegte Kritik des Rechts setzt daher bei den Ausgeschlossenen an und entwickelt ausgehend von der Kritischen Theorie und im Anschluss an poststrukturalistische und postkoloniale Ansätze eine biopolitische Theorie des Widerstands der Ausgeschlossenen. Simon Faets arbeitet und forscht am Schnittpunkt von Politischer Philosophie, Sozialphilosophie und Christlicher Sozialethik.

    "In Prophetic Visions of the Past: Pan-Caribbean Representations of the Haitian Revolution, Víctor Figueroa examines how the Haitian Revolution has been represented in twentieth-century literary works from across the Caribbean. Building on the scholarship of key thinkers of the Latin American "decolonial turn" such as Enrique Dussel, Ani;bal Quijano, Walter Mignolo, and Nelson Maldonado-Torres, Figueroa argues that examining how Haiti's neighbors tell the story of the Revolution illuminates its role as a fundamental turning point in both the development and radical questioning of the modern/colonial world system. Prophetic Visions of the Past includes chapters on literary texts from a wide array of languages, histories, and perspectives. Figueroa addresses work by Alejo Carpentier (Cuba), C. L. R. James (Trinidad), Luis Pale;s Matos (Puerto Rico), Aime; Ce;saire (Martinique), Derek Walcott (Saint Lucia), Edouard Glissant (Martinique), and Manuel Zapata Olivella (Colombia). While underscoring each writer's unique position, Figueroa also addresses their shared geographical, historical, and sociopolitical preoccupations, which are closely linked to the region's prolonged experience of colonial interventions. Ultimately, these analyses probe how, for the larger Caribbean region, the Haitian Revolution continues to reflect the tension between inspiring revolutionary hopes and an awareness of ongoing colonial objectification and exploitation.     "Beginning with the Haitian Revolution, Scott Henkel lays out a literary history of direct democracy in the Americas. Much research considers direct democracy as a form of organization fit for worker cooperatives or political movements. Henkel reinterprets it as a type of collective power, based on the massive slave revolt in Haiti. In the representations of slaves, women, and workers, Henkel traces a history of power through the literatures of the Americas during the long nineteenth century. Thinking about democracy as a type of power presents a challenge to common, often bureaucratic and limited interpretations of the term and opens an alternative archive, which Henkel argues includes C. L. R. James's The Black Jacobins, Walt Whitman's Democratic Vistas, Lucy Parsons's speeches advocating for the eight-hour workday, B. Traven's novels of the Mexican Revolution, and Marie Vieux Chauvet's novella about Haitian dictatorship. Henkel asserts that each writer recognized this power and represented its physical manifestation as a swarm. This metaphor bears a complicated history, often describing a group, a movement, or a community. Indeed it conveys multiplicity and complexity, a collective power. This metaphor's many uses illustrate Henkel's main concerns, the problems of democracy, slavery, and labor, the dynamics of racial repression and resistance, and the issues of power which run throughout the Americas."...

Das Leben von Geflüchteten scheint für nationalstaatliche Rechtssysteme beispielsweise weniger schützenswert zu sein als das Leben der eigenen Staatsbürger:innen. Die in diesem Buch vorgelegte Kritik des Rechts setzt daher bei den Ausgeschlossenen an und entwickelt ausgehend von der Kritischen Theorie und im Anschluss an poststrukturalistische und postkoloniale Ansätze eine biopolitische Theorie des Widerstands der Ausgeschlossenen. Simon Faets arbeitet und forscht am Schnittpunkt von Politischer Philosophie, Sozialphilosophie und Christlicher Sozialethik.

    Am 22. August 1791 brach in Port-au-Prince der erste große kollektive Sklavenaufstand der Neuzeit aus. Die Sklaven von Saint-Domingue erhoben sich gegen die französischen Kolonialherren. Am Ende dieses Aufstands proklamierten die Schwarzen und Mulatten am 1. Januar 1804 die Unabhängigkeit der Insel unter dem Namen Haiti. Haiti erlangte somit als erstes Land in Lateinamerika seine Unabhängigkeit. Dieses Buch zeigt das große Echo des Sklavenaufstands von Saint-Domingue in der Literatur des 19. Jahrhunderts. Deutlich wird, dass dieses Ereignis zu einem wichtigen Referenzpunkt der Moderne wurde und dass auch Texte etwa von Victor Hugo oder Heinrich von Kleist Teil eines übergreifenden Diskurses sind, in dem ethnische Differenz, Geschlecht und Nation als kulturelle Deutungsmuster wirksam sind

Building on the scholarship of key thinkers of the Latin American "decolonial turn" such as Enrique Dussel, Ani;bal Quijano, Walter Mignolo, and Nelson Maldonado-Torres, Figueroa argues that examining how Haiti's neighbors tell the story of the Revolution illuminates its role as a fundamental turning point in both the development and radical questioning of the modern/colonial world system. Prophetic Visions of the Past includes chapters on literary texts from a wide array of languages, histories, and perspectives. Figueroa addresses work by Alejo Carpentier (Cuba), C. L. R. James (Trinidad), Luis Pale;s Matos (Puerto Rico), Aime; Ce;saire (Martinique), Derek Walcott (Saint Lucia), Edouard Glissant (Martinique), and Manuel Zapata Olivella (Colombia). While underscoring each writer's unique position, Figueroa also addresses their shared geographical, historical, and sociopolitical preoccupations, which are closely linked to the region's prolonged experience of colonial interventions. Ultimately, these analyses probe how, for the larger Caribbean region, the Haitian Revolution continues to reflect the tension between inspiring revolutionary hopes and an awareness of ongoing colonial objectification and exploitation.     The Haitian revolutionary leader Toussaint Louverture is a mythical figure: but how is he represented in French literature? Wie wurde und wird der haitianische Revolutionsführer Toussaint Louverture (1743-1803) in der französischen Literatur repräsentiert?Isabell Lammel betrachtet die unterschiedlichen Renarrationen dieses Mythos, der in der Historiografie nahezu dem Vergessen anheimfiel, vom Ende des 18. bis zum Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts. Mithilfe des jeweiligen historischen und soziokulturellen Kontexts erläutert sie die sich realisierenden Transformationen des Mythos.
