"While providing critical reflections on the work across generations of enthusiasts, this is the first book exclusively dedicated to John le Carré's 1974 novel and its adaptations in radio, TV, and film. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy stands among the most reproduced espionage tales of all time, with adaptations in television, radio, and film. Histories, Adaptations, and Legacies of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a collection of essays by international experts who each provides an account of the story's currency across generations of audiences and scholars. Fans of the late John le Carré and the espionage genre will find here a comprehensive guidebook to the novel and its adaptations. Scholars, students, and amateur investigators alike will discover important historical, thematic, and theoretical ideas to explore and interrogate. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a complex tale of the espionage trade and its crew of motley eccentrics. This collection decodes its puzzles, riddles, and enigmas regarding secrecy, betrayal, ethics, and survival in the context of the United Kingdom's place in the post-Second World War global order. A comprehensive guide for amateurs and an in-depth study of the novel's histories, legacies, and approaches for students and scholars"--

"Most Americans today view freedom of speech as a bedrock of all other liberties, a defining feature of American citizenship. During the nineteenth century, the popular concept of American freedom of speech was still being formed. In An Indispensable Liberty: The Fight for Freedom of Expression in the Nineteenth Century, contributors examine attempts to restrict freedom of speech and the press during and after the Civil War. The nine essays that make up this collection show how, despite judicial, political, and public proclamations of support for freedom of expression, factors like tradition, gender stereotypes, religion, and fear of social unrest often led to narrow judicial and political protection for freedom of expression by people whose views upset the status quo. These views, expressed by abolitionists, suffragists, and labor leaders, challenged rigid cultural mores of the day, and many political and cultural leaders feared that extending freedom of expression to agitators would undermine society. The Civil War intensified questions about the duties and privileges of citizenship. After the war, key conflicts over freedom of expression were triggered by Reconstruction, suffrage, the Comstock Act, and questions about libel. The volume's contributors blend social, cultural, and intellectual history to untangle the complicated strands of nineteenth-century legal thought. By chronicling the development of modern-day notions of free speech, this timely collection offers both a valuable exploration of the First Amendment in nineteenth-century America and a useful perspective on challenges to today's civil liberties. A thoroughly interdisciplinary set of essays, they address two major topics: what new directions should Thomas Paine Studies take, given his deep influence on the Atlantic and global revolutions in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, as well as his contemporary place as a political icon to diverse political groups? The dialogue initiated by the conference seemed to propose an answer, which is likewise a major topic of the collection: the engine of any new direction in Thomas Paine Studies will hinge on deconstructing the national barriers that have surrounded Paine Studies for decades. Paine Studies historically have been bound by national histories, language, and cultural interpretation, seeking to understand a part of Paine and Paine's ideals, but not how they fit into the longitudinal perspective of the first self-proclaimed global citizen. The dismantling of these national and academic silos is the essential and imperative new direction for Paine Studies this collection engages"...

The volume reflects the history of modern biography since Johann Gottfried Herder. The historical status and methodology of significant paradigm-forming biographies are systematically examined. The processes deployed here are principally those of hermeneutics, ideology critique and narratology. Together with the volume Die Biographie - Zur Grundlegung ihrer Theorie [Towards a Theory of Biography], this work is published on behalf of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for the History and Theory of Biography in Vienna

The concepts of utopia and dystopia have received much historical attention. Utopias have traditionally signified the ideal future: large-scale social, political, ethical, and religious spaces that have yet to be realized. Utopia/Dystopia offers a fresh approach to these ideas. Rather than locate utopias in grandiose programs of future totality, the book treats these concepts as historically grounded categories and examines how individuals and groups throughout time have interpreted utopian visions in their daily present, with an eye toward the future

Subaltern theory emerged as a small voice within academia decades ago. Over time, this work generated significant debate and numerous publications, talks, and conferences. However, little has changed in the experienced lives of the masses. This led people to wonder: "the subalterns seem to have a voice, but can they take action?"; or, in other words, is there subaltern practice? This collection of essays and poems, written with a broad audience in mind, hopes to demonstrate not just how the subaltern can identify and question hegemonic practices, but how they can create alternative frameworks and material that enable themselves and their communities. In doing so, this book aims to demonstrate not just how deep the colonial poisons run, but also how to detoxify ourselves and the environment around us. The writings included in this book study the inequalities that we experience in and around us and suggest actions and practices that can help us regain harmony. It is a call for action and a sharing of ideas that can enable us to regain balance and fulfil our human responsibilities

"The three decades that followed World War II were an exceptionally fertile period for American essays. The explosion of journals and magazines, the rise of public intellectuals, and breakthroughs in the arts inspired a flowering of literary culture. At the same time, the many problems that confronted mid-century America--racism, sexism, nuclear threat, war, poverty, and environmental degradation among them--proved fruitful topics for America's best minds. In The Golden Age of the American Essay, Phillip Lopate assembles a dazzling array of famous writers, critics, sociologists, theologians, historians, activists, theorists, humorists, poets, and novelists. Here are writers like James Agee, E. B. White, A. J. Liebling, Randall Jarrell, and Mary McCarthy, pivoting from the comic indignities of daily life to world peace, consumerism, and restaurants in Paris. Here is Norman Mailer on Jackie Kennedy, Vladimir Nabokov on Lolita, Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "Letter from Birmingham Jail," and Richard Hofstadter's "The Paranoid Style in American Politics." Here are Gore Vidal, Rachel Carson, James Baldwin, Susan Sontag, John Updike, Joan Didion, and many more, in a treasury of brilliant writing that has stood the test of time." -Amazon

This book makes a unique and timely contribution to world/global historical studies and related fields. It places essential world historical frameworks by top scholars in the field today in clear, direct relation to and conversation with one other, offering them opportunity to enrich, elucidate and, at times, challenge one another. It thereby aims to: (1) offer world historians opportunity to critically reflect upon and refine their essential interpretational frameworks, (2) facilitate more effective and nuanced teaching and learning in and beyond the classroom, (3) provide accessible world historical contexts for specialized areas of historical as well as other fields of research in the humanities, social sciences and sciences, and (4) promote comparative historiographical critique which (a) helps identify continuing research questions for the field of world history in particular, as well as (b) further global peace and dialogue in relation to varying views of our ever-increasingly interconnected, interdependent, multicultural, and globalized world and its shared though diverse and sometimes contested history.-- ""21st-Century Narratives of World History""; ""Foreword""; ""Preface""; ""Acknowledgements""; ""Contents""; ""Editor and Contributors""; ""List of Figures and Tables""; ""Part I Historical Background""; ""Part I Historical Background""; ""Chapter 1 â#x80;#x98;Grand Narrativeâ#x80;#x99; and â#x80;#x98;Newâ#x80;#x99; World Histories: Their Historical Challenges and Contributions in Western Scholarship ""; ""Chapter 2 â#x80;#x98;Westernâ#x80;#x99; and â#x80;#x98;White Civilizationâ#x80;#x99;: White Nationalism and Eurocentrism at the Crossroads ""; ""The Post-Cold War and Post-911 Turn""; ""Part II 21st-Century Narratives of World History ""Chapter 3 Periodization in World History: Challenges and Opportunities """"Introduction: Issues and Criteria""; ""Developing Critical Thinking Skills Through Debate Over World History Periodization""; ""A Periodization Framework""; ""Getting Started""; ""Agriculture""; ""The Early Civilization Period, 3500â#x80;#x93;600 or so BCE""; ""World History Periodization in the Past Three Millennia""; ""The Classical Period""; ""Post-classical, 600â#x80;#x93;1450""; ""Opportunities for Debate""; ""Early Modern, 1450â#x80;#x93;1750""; ""Other Opportunities for Debate""; ""The Long Nineteenth Century ""Some Inescapable Debates""""The Contemporary Era""; ""For Debate""; ""The End of the Contemporary Era""; ""Chapter 4 â#x80;#x9C;Complexity, Energy and Information in Big History and Human Historyâ#x80;#x9D; ""; ""Introduction""; ""A Big History Storyline: Increasing Complexity and Flows of Free Energy""; ""Complexity, Free Energy and Entropy""; ""Building Complex Physical Systems""; ""Life and Information""; ""Information: Universal and Local""; ""Local Information and the Evolution of Life""; ""Human History: Information Unleashed""; ""Collective Learning in the Paleolithic Era ""Agrarian Societies of the Holocene Epoch""""Agriculture, Complexity and New Emergent Properties""; ""Agriculture and New Flows of Energy""; ""Agriculture, Complex Societies and New Information Flows""; ""An Energy Ceiling to Agrarian Societies?""; ""The Anthropocene Epoch""; ""And Back to Big History""; ""Further Reading""; ""Chapter 5 History Beyond Humanity: Between â#x80;#x98;Bigâ#x80;#x99; and â#x80;#x98;Deepâ#x80;#x99; History ""; ""Introduction""; ""History Beyond Humanity: Between â#x80;#x98;Bigâ#x80;#x99; and â#x80;#x98;Deepâ#x80;#x99; History""; ""Chapter 6 The Human System: An Introduction ""; ""The Human System and Its Troubles ""Formation and Expansion of the Human System, 70,000â#x80;#x93;30,000 BP""""Biological and Social Systems: Theories of Their Evolution""; ""Social Evolution and Social Reproduction""; ""Dilemmas and Subsystems, 30,000â#x80;#x93;6000 BP""; ""Diverging Scales of Social Order, 4000 BCEâ#x80;#x93;1700 CE""; ""Human Nature: Can It Change? 1700 to the Present""; ""Chapter 7 Social and Cultural World History ""; ""Introduction""; ""Social and Cultural World History""; ""Foraging and Farming Families to 3000 BCE""; ""Cities and Classical Societies (3000 BCEâ#x80;#x93;500 CE) ""Expanding Networks of Interaction, 500 CEâ#x80;#x93;1500 CE

Through a close reading of the lives and works of some of the greatest intellectuals of recent times, Adam Shatz asks: do writers have an ethical imperative to question injustice? How can one remain a dispassionate thinker when involved in the cut and thrust of politics? And, in an age of horror and crisis, what does it mean to be a committed writer?Shatz interrogates the major figures of twentieth and twenty-first century thought and finds within their lives and work the roots of our present intellectual and geopolitical situation. Charting the role of the committed intellectual through the work of Jean-Paul Sartre on the Algerian War and Edward Said's lifelong solidarity with the Palestinian people, to Fouad Ajami's role as the "native informant" for pro-intervention cause in the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq, alongside philosophers and critics Roland Barthes, Jacques Derrida and Claude Levi-Strauss and the novelists Michel Houllebecq and Richard Wright, each struggled to reconcile their writing and their politics, their thought and their commitments. Writers and Missionaries is an erudite and incisive work of intellectual elucidation and biographical enquiry that demands that we interrogate anew the relation of thought and action in the struggle for a more just world "In this incisive series of intellectual portraits, Adam Shatz, one of the Anglophone world's foremost essayists, charts the role of the committed intellectual. Through the work of Jean-Paul Sartre, he shows how writers bind themselves to the project embodied in their work In a moving portrait of Edward Said, Shatz uncovers the profound role the cause of Palestinian liberation had on his life and writing. And via thinkers as diverse as Fouad Ajami, Roland Barthes, Jacques Derrida, and Claude Lévi-Strauss, as well as the novelists Michel Houllebecq and Richard Wright, he explores the struggle authors face in reconciling writing with politics, thought with ethical commitments"--

Already the Middle Ages knew of horror vacui, the horror of emptiness. And as for us today, there is still nothing we fear more than idleness and boredom, empty gas tanks and empty supermarket shelves. On the other hand, the ghostly emptiness we experienced during the coronavirus lockdown or in dystopian zombie films also has something fascinating about it. For the atomists of antiquity, it was only thanks to the void that there was any movement in the world at all. From Zen to Dada, from modernism to pop culture, emptiness is not feared or denied, but celebrated and affirmed, explored and staged. This book tells the ever-changing story of an ambivalent concept. It is not only about the powerful phantasm of the great, enormous void at the beginning and end of the world, but also about the void as a space of play and in-between: about the empty spaces of our self-images and world views, about a loosened culture of pauses and gaps. Because, as we all know, the holes are what essentially makes a sieve
