In this handsomely illustrated new book, Paul Mangelsdorf, perhaps the world's foremost expert on the corn plant, summarizes the work of a lifetime devoted to unraveling the enigma of corn. This unique grain--it has no close counterpart elsewhere in the plant kingdom--exists only in association with man, and it survives only as a result of his intervention. Thus, the story of corn is in many ways a story about people. Combining the skills of scientist and storyteller, Professor Mangelsdorf in his search for the origin of corn takes the reader to archaeological digs in once-inhabited caves in Mexico and the United States Southwest, to the discovery of fossil pollen in drill cores taken deep below Mexico City, and to experimental fields where the great diversity of corn is revealed and where the plant is hybridized with its relatives teosinte and Tripsacum. Drawing upon the evidence from botany, genetics, cytology, archaeology, and history, the author seeks to evaluate various hypotheses on the origin of corn. He concludes that the ancestor of cultivated corn was a wild form of pod corn; that corn may have been domesticated more than once in both Mexico and South America from different geographical races of wild corn; and that hybridizations between corn and its various relatives have resulted in explosive evolution leading to a diversity of varieties and forms unmatched in any other crop plant. This is a book about corn, but it is a book for biologists, agronomists, anthropologists, and historians, and for the interested layman who would like to know something about the grain which, "transformed, as three fourths of it is, into meat, milk, eggs, and other animal products, is our basic food plant, as it was of the people who preceded us in this hemisphere."

    First things first-contrary to popular opinion, the main reason farmers and grain traders use futures markets is not to hedge spot price and basis risks, but to ensure the profitability of the storage business. The scientific literature mainly discusses the minimum variance hedge ratio, which aims at minimizing spot price and basis risks. In practice, however, it is of little use to farmers and grain traders and has the potential to yield negative economic consequences. Minimum variance hedging (MVH) leads to over-hedging on inverse markets and under-hedging on carry markets. In both cases, the costs of storage cannot be (adequately) covered. It is therefore not surprising that farmers and grain traders do not actually use MVH. On a carry market, a good strategy is to trade the basis. The opposite is true for inverse markets where hedging on futures markets does not make sense. Here, it is better to follow a rather speculative strategy that takes account of price trends. In a nutshell: buy on a weak basis and sell on a strong basis (carry market), or speculate (inverse market).

    Viele afrikanische Länder sind stark von Importen von Agrargütern und Inputs aus der Ukraine und Russland abhängig, beispielsweise Weizen, anderen Getreiden und Dünger. Russlands Invasion der Ukraine gefährdet die weltweite Verfügbarkeit von Getreide aufgrund reduzierter Produktion, geringeren Exporten, und gestiegenen Handelskosten. Dieser Policy Brief untersucht die möglichen langfristigen Auswirkungen des Konflikts auf die Ernährungssicherheit in Afrika. Wir verwenden ein langfristiges allgemeines Gleichgewichtsmodell, um drei Szenarien, die in Folge des Konflikts entstehen könnten, zu analysieren. 1) Ein Ende der Exporte ukrainischen Weizens und anderer Getreide für die Lebensmittelproduktion, beispielsweise Mais und Hirse, 2) Ein möglicher Stopp russischer Getreide- und Düngerexporte, und 3) Der Einfluss gestiegener Handelskosten aufgrund der gestörten Handelsrouten im Schwarzen Meer. Die Modellsimulationen zeigen, dass der Konflikt die Ernährungssicherheit in Afrika gefährdet. Wir dokumentieren wichtige Länderunterschiede in der Schwere der Betroffenheit. Many African countries heavily rely on imports of agricultural commodities and agricultural inputs from Ukraine and Russia, for example wheat, other grains, and fertilizer. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has disrupted global access to grains due to reduced production, exports, and increased trade costs. This policy brief investigates the possible long-term consequences of the conflict on food security in Africa. We use a long-run general equilibrium trade model and study three scenarios that may evolve as a consequence of the conflict: 1) Ending exports of Ukrainian wheat and other cereals for food production, such as corn or sorghum. 2) Russia's potential ban on exports of grains and fertilizers, and 3) The impact of increased trade costs due to disrupted trade routes in the Black Sea. The model simulations show the conflict will severely compromise food security in Africa. We document important cross-country heterogeneity in the severity of impacts.

    The war in Ukraine has aggravated existing tensions on the agricultural commodities market. Since late 2021, prices for commodities such as grains and vegetable oils have reached record highs, surpassing even the levels of the global food price crises of more than a decade ago. Now, the invasion of Russian forces in Ukraine has sent prices soaring even higher. This has above all affected import-dependent countries in the MENA region and sub-Saharan Africa, which rely heavily on Russian and Ukrainian wheat. Disruptions to exports from the Black Sea region and high prices are further destabilizing food security in these regions. However, global demand for wheat is expected to be met in the current marketing year since countries such as Australia, India and the USA will increase exports to fill the gap left by Russia and Ukraine. It is difficult to predict what will happen beyond this marketing year, as this will be determined by the development of the current conflict in addition to agricultural fundamentals in key supply and demand regions. Global food systems and competitive international trade structures, in particular, are key to dealing with crises and mitigating the risks of food shortages. That way, disruptions in some exporting regions can be compensated for by exports from another. However, this requires greater collaboration in international trade. Any calls to move towards a centrally planned economy or autarky are strongly advised against, as this would only be to the detriment of food security in the Global South. Der Krieg in der Ukraine hat die seit zwei Jahren bestehende angespannte Versorgungslage auf den internationalen Agrarrohstoffmärkten nochmals verstärkt. Die Preise für Agrarrohstoffe, wie Getreide und Pflanzenöle, übersteigen schon seit Herbst 2021 die Hochpreisniveaus der Nahrungskrisen vor gut einem Jahrzehnt und haben mit Einmarsch russischer Truppen in die Ukraine nochmals angezogen. Besonders betroffen sind die nachfrageboomenden Weizenimporteure in der MENA-Region und in Afrika südlich der Sahara. Russland und die Ukraine sind deren Hauptlieferanten. Lieferengpässe aus der Schwarzmeerregion, gepaart mit hohen Preisen, belasten die ohnehin kritische Ernährungssituation in diesen Regionen zusätzlich. Dennoch, nach gegenwärtigem Stand können die Weizenmärkte im laufenden Wirtschaftsjahr bedient werden. Zusätzliche Exporte aus anderen Regionen, darunter Indien, den USA, und Australien, werden die geringeren Liefermengen aus Russland und vor allem der Ukraine im Rest der laufenden Saison weitgehend ausgleichen. Die Entwicklungen für das nächste Wirtschaftsjahr und darüber hinaus sind hingegen schwer vorauszusehen. Neben der Entwicklung des Konfliktes und dessen Folgen hängen sie natürlich weiterhin von den gängigen agronomischen Fundamentalfaktoren in zentralen Angebots- und Nachfrageregionen ab. In solchen Knappheitssituationen zeigt sich, dass eine global agierende Nahrungswirtschaft und insbesondere wettbewerblich organisierte internationale Handelsstrukturen geeignet sind, Krisen und Risiken zu begegnen. Lieferausfälle aus bestimmten Regionen lassen sich durch Lieferungen anderer Regionen kompensieren. Entsprechend kann nur ein Mehr an internationaler Vernetzung gefordert werden. Vor Rufen nach planwirtschaftlichen Transformationen oder gar Autarkie muss eindringlich gewarnt werden. Alles dies würde zu Lasten hungernder Menschen im globalen Süden gehen.
