    The Mediterranean region of Liguria, where the Maritime Alps sweep down to the coasts of northwest Italy and southeast France, the Riviera, marks the intersection of two of Europe’s major cultural landscapes. Remote, liminal, compact, and steep, the terrain has influenced many international authors and artists. In this study, Martina Kolb traces Liguria’s specific impact on the works of three seminal German-writing modernists – Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, and Gottfried Benn – whose encounters with Ligurian lands and seas led to an innovative geopoetic fusion of word and world.Kolb examines each of these authors’ acquired affinities with Ligurian and Provençal landscapes and seascapes, revisiting and reassessing the long tradition of northern longing for a Mediterranean south. She also shows how Freud and Benn followed in the footsteps of Nietzsche in his most prolific years, a topic which has received little critical attention to date. Nietzsche, Freud, Benn, and the Azure Spell of Liguria offers a fresh approach to these writers’ groundbreaking literary achievements and profound interest in poetic expression as cathartic self-liberation.

    Jewish writers have long had a sense of place in the United States, and interpretations of American geography have appeared in Jewish American literature from the colonial era forward. But troublingly, scholarship on Jewish American literary history often limits itself to an immigrant model, situating the Jewish American literary canon firmly and inescapably among the immigrant authors and early environments of the early twentieth century. In A Hundred Acres of America, Michael Hoberman combines literary history and geography to restore Jewish American writers to their roles as critical members of the American literary landscape from the 1850s to the present, and to argue that Jewish history, American literary history, and the inhabitation of American geography are, and always have been, contiguous entities.

    Biographical note: Malte Kleinwort (Dr. phil.) ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der FernUniversität in Hagen. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind u.a. Poetologien des Wissens, Schreibprozessforschung und die Geschichte der Ohnmacht. Joseph Vogl (Prof. Dr. phil.) ist Professor für »Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft/Medien« an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind u.a. Geschichte und Theorie des Wissens, Geschichte der politischen Ökonomie und Geschichte von Gefahr und Gefährlichkeit in der Neuzeit. Auch nach bald 90 Jahren Rezeptionsgeschichte demonstriert dieser Band eindrucksvoll: Kafkas »Schloss« kann weiterhin überraschen und begeistern. Eine Reihe namhafter Kafka-Forscherinnen und -Forscher aus Deutschland, Großbritannien und den USA macht sich auf den Weg ins »Schloss« und erkundet die ambivalenten Topographien des Textes. Kafkas letztes Romanfragment erweist sich dabei in mehrfacher Hinsicht als ein Schwellentext. »Das Schloss« ist kein fertiges Gebilde, sondern ein Kaleidoskop, das eine Vielzahl von zum Teil divergenten »Schloss«-Ansichten präsentiert.

    This study offers a sustained examination of the presentation of eastern Asia, the Middle East, and northern Africa in two of the most important chivalric epics of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Matteo Maria Boiardo’s Orlando Innamorato (1495) and Ludovico Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso (1516). Comparing the narratological strategies used to depict non-European characters in these stories, Jo Ann Cavallo argues that Boiardo’s cosmopolitan vision of humankind increasingly became replaced by Ariosto’s crusading ideology, which emphasized a binary opposition between Christians and Saracens.Cavallo addresses the poems’ mixing of imaginary sites and the geographical reality of a rapidly expanding globe, contextualizing them against current events and concerns, as well as ancient, medieval, and Renaissance texts influential at the time. As the prize committee for the Scaglione Publication Award for a Manuscript in Italian Literary Studies noted: “This articulate, engaging, and well-documented study represents an important work of scholarship in its cross-cultural considerations of Italian Renaissance epic poetry.”
