    Claudia Gather: Feministin, Forscherin, Netzwerkerin und Mentorin sowie unermüdliche Hochschulgestalterin und Hochschullehrerin; sie hat durch ihr Schaffen, Denken und Handeln in den letzten Jahrzehnten bleibende Eindrücke hinterlassen, nicht nur in den Gender Studies in Forschung, Lehre und Praxis, sondern auch bei Menschen, die sie im Laufe der Jahre umsichtig und selbstverständlich unterstützt hat. Ein Grund, sie mit dieser Festschrift für ihr wissenschaftliches Lebenswerk zu würdigen.     Die Studie analysiert die Verbindungen, die Theorien des Romans mit Konzeptualisierungen von Geschlecht seit den Anfängen der literarischen Moderne eingegangen sind. Die untersuchten Texte erfassen nicht nur die relativ junge Gattung des Romans; denn indem sie Geschlechterimagines für ihre Zwecke operationalisieren, bringen sie zugleich die Kategorie der Männlichkeit hervor: Romantheorien sind Geschlechtertheorien. Indem die Studie einschlägige Romantheorien von Huet und Blanckenburg über F. Schlegel und Hegel bis Vischer und Lukács in den Blick nimmt, geht sie dem Aufwand nach, der in den Texten betrieben wird, um Roman und Männlichkeit gegenseitig zu stabilisieren – und zeigt, wie fragil Männlichkeit auch an und in Romantheorien arbeitet. This study examines the theory of the novel and the conceptualisation of gender as having been inextricably intertwined since the inception of the former and the rise of modernity. Authors of these theories sought to address not only the relatively young genre of the novel, but also the category of masculinity: theories of the novel became theories of gender. Through an analysis of relevant theories of the novel, from Huet and Blanckenburg via F. Schlegel and Hegel to Vischer and Lukács, this study traces the efforts made in the texts to mutually stabilise masculinity and the novel. This attempt at mutual stability opens points of rupture, revealing the vulnerable achievements of masculinity and the novel.

    Franziska zu Reventlows Romane, die lange als autobiografische Zeugnisse des ›skandalösen‹ Lebens ihrer Autorin rezipiert wurden, sind geprägt von einem ironisch-kritischen Umgang mit literarischen und kulturellen Traditionslinien sowie der eigenen Person. Die Studie perspektiviert die inner- wie außerliterarischen Inszenierungen und den ›Mythos Reventlow‹ erstmals als Effekt eines komplexen Wechselspiels aus Selbst- und Fremdzuschreibungen, das sich in den literarischen Texten und der medialen Autorinneninszenierung niederschlägt. Franziska zu Reventlow’s novels have long been received as autobiographical references to her ‘scandalous’ life. Focusing instead on the narrative strategies and intermedial structure of her work, this study foregrounds Reventlow’s ironic deconstruction of cultural and literary traditions as well as her own public persona. The authorial myth surrounding Reventlow’s work and persona is explored as the effect of complex interplay between her self-fashioning and literary texts.

Der Band geht zurück auf ein Panel, das Stephanie Catani (Universität Würzburg) und Friedhelm Marx (Universität Bamberg) im Rahmen des 26. I explore this space through four fandoms: fairy tales, Harry Potter, The Mortal Instruments, and The Bold Type as representative examples of the tensions that stem from power tensions. This dissertation argues that fan texts and online social media interactions between fans and between fans and industry creators reveal a continuous negotiation between these groups to control ideology and reading and writing practices. I utilize literary critical, folklore, and fandom critical frameworks to research reception and writing practices. Each chapter contributes to questions of negotiated authority within the context of each fandom. The nature of these negotiations focuses on the participants: between fans is a communal negotiation and between fans and industry creators is a power negotiation over reception and representation. The chapters on The Mortal Instruments and The Bold Type focus on ownership claims over the universe between creators and fans. The chapters on fairy tales and Harry Potter focus on reading and writing practices negotiated between fans within the community. I argue that these claims to ownership and control are complicated because they are representations of culture, manifested in texts that can be owned through copyright, but the cultural ideologies and values cannot.

    This dissertation examines adaptations of TV series in multiple countries by focusing on transnational TV series adaptations as an ideal platform to study the complexities of cultural representations and productions in the context of globalization. To conduct my research, I use the popular American TV crime show: Law & Order: Criminal Intent and its French adaptation Paris Enquêtes Criminelles. My research project uses the methods of multimodality, film studies, and intercultural studies, and a new technological approach to analyze transnational TV shows. The goal is to automatically extract and manage big data to uncover trends of cultural representation on screen. To do so, I propose a method, called the Multimodal Intercultural Matrix (MIM) model, that enables reverse engineering a show and to quantify the various elements of the episodes for cultural analysis. The MIM model dissects the show into three cultural categories, named Power, Language, and Society. Each of those categories is constructed by, and intersects with, three different modes: Cinematography, Non-Verbal Communication, and Speech. Following this method, and based on concepts of close and distant reading, this dissertation provides an in-depth scene analysis both demonstrating the proposed methodology and suggesting how it can be used on a larger scale for other projects. In collaboration with an artificial intelligence engineer, Anjal Amin, who developed an AI software system called the Möbius Trip, the software allowed me to mine big data sets from the television programs studied. It also allows for the automatic and systematic analysis of the show's episodes. The software, for example, recognizes the characters' genders and facial expressions. With the Möbius Trip, the dissertation objectively demonstrates that women have significantly less onscreen time in the US than they have in France. It also shows that men are more likely to display anger while women exhibit fear in both cultures. France tends to be more egalitarian in terms of gender roles than in the US. Nonetheless, men seem to remain the oppressors and women the victims in both versions.

    This work looks at the gendered nature of the US video gaming industry. Although there were attempts to incorporate women into development roles and market towards them as players, the creation of video games and the industry began in a world strongly gendered male. The early 1980s saw a blip of hope that the counter-cultural industry focused on fun would begin to include women, but after the video game industry crash, this free-wheeling freedom of the industry ended along with the beginnings of the inclusion of women. Many of the threads that began in the early years continued or have parallels with the modern video game industry. The industry continues to struggle with gender relations in the workplace and with the strongly gendered male demographic that the industry perceives as its main market

The chapters reflect upon the role of tourism in producing, reiterating and resisting existing gendered structures of power in Asia.     This dissertation examines adaptations of TV series in multiple countries by focusing on transnational TV series adaptations as an ideal platform to study the complexities of cultural representations and productions in the context of globalization. To conduct my research, I use the popular American TV crime show: Law & Order: Criminal Intent and its French adaptation Paris Enquêtes Criminelles. My research project uses the methods of multimodality, film studies, and intercultural studies, and a new technological approach to analyze transnational TV shows. The goal is to automatically extract and manage big data to uncover trends of cultural representation on screen. To do so, I propose a method, called the Multimodal Intercultural Matrix (MIM) model, that enables reverse engineering a show and to quantify the various elements of the episodes for cultural analysis. The MIM model dissects the show into three cultural categories, named Power, Language, and Society. Each of those categories is constructed by, and intersects with, three different modes: Cinematography, Non-Verbal Communication, and Speech. Following this method, and based on concepts of close and distant reading, this dissertation provides an in-depth scene analysis both demonstrating the proposed methodology and suggesting how it can be used on a larger scale for other projects. In collaboration with an artificial intelligence engineer, Anjal Amin, who developed an AI software system called the Möbius Trip, the software allowed me to mine big data sets from the television programs studied. It also allows for the automatic and systematic analysis of the show's episodes. The software, for example, recognizes the characters' genders and facial expressions. With the Möbius Trip, the dissertation objectively demonstrates that women have significantly less onscreen time in the US than they have in France. It also shows that men are more likely to display anger while women exhibit fear in both cultures. France tends to be more egalitarian in terms of gender roles than in the US.     Recent scholarship in fandom studies explores power relations between fans and industry creators and intrafandom fans. The crux of the relationship between fans and industry creators is claims of ownership over reception and creativity. I explore this space through four fandoms: fairy tales, Harry Potter, The Mortal Instruments, and The Bold Type as representative examples of the tensions that stem from power tensions. This dissertation argues that fan texts and online social media interactions between fans and between fans and industry creators reveal a continuous negotiation between these groups to control ideology and reading and writing practices. I utilize literary critical, folklore, and fandom critical frameworks to research reception and writing practices. Each chapter contributes to questions of negotiated authority within the context of each fandom. The nature of these negotiations focuses on the participants: between fans is a communal negotiation and between fans and industry creators is a power negotiation over reception and representation. The chapters on The Mortal Instruments and The Bold Type focus on ownership claims over the universe between creators and fans. The chapters on fairy tales and Harry Potter focus on reading and writing practices negotiated between fans within the community. I argue that these claims to ownership and control are complicated because they are representations of culture, manifested in texts that can be owned through copyright, but the cultural ideologies and values cannot.
