Es stellt einen ästhetischen Raum bereit, in dem weitgehend gezielte und reflektierte (Körper-)Aktionen stattfinden, während sich alltägliche Geschlechterperformanzen eher unbewusst vollziehen. Das Theater übersetzt diese ‘natürlichen Prozesse’ in ästhetische Spiele und eröffnet damit sowohl in seiner illusionistisch-mimetischen wie postdramatischen Variante GeschlechterSpielRäume . Der vorliegende Sammelband untersucht aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive die Gender-Konstellationen in Dramen und Theatertexten vom 17. bis zum 21. Jahrhundert in unterschiedlichen Nationalliteraturen und er nimmt das Theater als Institution in den Blick, um den Zusammenhang von Gender, Kunstsparten und Beruf zu verdeutlichen. Darüber hinaus werden sowohl die Performativität anderer Wirklichkeiten wie Medizin und Museum als auch die zeitgenössische Performance fokussiert

    How are masculinities enacted in Australian theatre? How do Australian playwrights depict masculinities in the present and the past, in the bush and on the beach, in the city and in the suburbs? How do Australian plays dramatise gender issues like father-son relations, romance and intimacy, violence and bullying, mateship and homosexuality, race relations between men, and men's experiences of war and migration? Men at Play explores theatre's role in presenting and contesting images of masculinity in Australia. It ranges from often-produced plays of the 1950s to successful contemporary plays - from Dick Diamond's Reedy River , Ray Lawler's Summer of the Seventeenth Dol l, Richard Beynon's The Shifting Heart and Alan Seymour's The One Day of the Year to David Williamson's Sons of Cain , Richard Barrett's The Heartbreak Kid , Gordon Graham's The Boys and Nick Enright's Blackrock . The book looks at plays as they are produced in the theatre and masculinity as it is enacted on the stage. It is written in an accessible style for students and teachers in drama at university and senior high school. The book's contribution to contemporary debates about masculinity will also interest scholars in gender, race and sexuality studies, literary studies and Australian history. Es stellt einen ästhetischen Raum bereit, in dem weitgehend gezielte und reflektierte (Körper-)Aktionen stattfinden, während sich alltägliche Geschlechterperformanzen eher unbewusst vollziehen. Das Theater übersetzt diese ‘natürlichen Prozesse’ in ästhetische Spiele und eröffnet damit sowohl in seiner illusionistisch-mimetischen wie postdramatischen Variante GeschlechterSpielRäume . Der vorliegende Sammelband untersucht aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive die Gender-Konstellationen in Dramen und Theatertexten vom 17. bis zum 21. Jahrhundert in unterschiedlichen Nationalliteraturen und er nimmt das Theater als Institution in den Blick, um den Zusammenhang von Gender, Kunstsparten und Beruf zu verdeutlichen. Darüber hinaus werden sowohl die Performativität anderer Wirklichkeiten wie Medizin und Museum als auch die zeitgenössische Performance fokussiert

    Conventional notions of avant-garde art suggest innovative artists rebelling against artistic convention and social propriety, shocking unwilling audiences into new ways of seeing and living. Viewers in Distress tells a different story. Beginning in the tumultuous 1990s, after the fall of the Berlin Wall and in the wake of the Los Angeles riots, rebellious spectators in American and British theaters broke with theater decorum and voiced their radical interpretations of shows that were not meant to be radical. In doing so, audiences tried to understand the complex racial, gender, and religious politics of their times, while insisting that liberal societies fulfill their promise of dignity for all. Stefka Mihaylova argues that such non-conforming viewing amounts to an avant-garde of its own: a bold reimagining of how we live together and tell stories of our lives together, aimed to achieve liberalism's promise. In telling this story, she analyzes the production and reception politics of works by Susan-Lori Parks, Sarah Kane, Forced Entertainment, Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti, and Young Jean Lee, as well as non-theatrical controversies such as the conflict over Halloween costumes at Yale in 2015. At the core of spectators' discontent, this book suggests, is an effort to figure out how to get along with people different from ourselves in the diverse U.S. and British societies in which we live

    Since young male players were the norm during the English Renaissance, were all cross-dressed performances of female characters played with the same degree of seriousness? Probably not. Spectrums of Representation in Shakespearean Crossdressing examines these varied types of female characters in English Renaissance drama, drawing from a range of play texts themselves in order to investigate if evidence exists for varying performance practices for male-to-female crossdressing. This book argues for a reading of the representation of female characters on the English Renaissance stage that not only suggests categorizing crossdressing along a spectrum of theatrical artifice, but also explores how this range of artifice enriches our understanding of the plays. The scholarship surrounding cross-dressing rarely makes this distinction, since in our study of early modern plays we tend to accept as a matter of course that all crossdressing was essentially the same.
