    This work is a study of two Neo-Latin poems of the 17th century: Renè Rapin`s Hortorum libri IV, dealing with contemporary French garden architecture, and Cowley`s Plantarum libri VI, in which the plants are personified and botanical information is embedded in various mythological and historical narratives. The author examines both the subject matter and the formal characteristics of the two poems. Her textual analysis focusses in particular on their use of classical models. Die Studie untersucht zwei im selben Jahrzehnt entstandene, thematisch miteinander verwandte lateinische Gedichte aus der Zeit des europäischen Barock: Die Hortorum libri IV des französischen Jesuiten Renè Rapin, die in mehr als 3250 lateinischen Hexametern den französischen Gartenbau zu Beginn seiner großen Blütezeit darstellen, und die Plantarum libri VI (ca. 7000 Verse) des englischen Dichters Abraham Cowley, in denen Pflanzen mit ihren botanischen Eigenschaften als Personen in mythologisch-historischen Erzählzusammenhängen auftreten.

    Rapins Hortorum libri IV sind ein antikisierendes Lehrgedicht, das den zeitgenössischen Gartenbau in Frankreich als Höhepunkt der Entwicklung auf diesem Gebiet feiert. In den Plantarum libri VI läßt Cowley die Pflanzen als Personen in mythologisch-historischen Erzählzusammenhängen auftreten, ohne darüber pflanzenkundliche Aspekte zu vernachlässigen. Während die Hortorum libri IV vor allem als Nachahmung von Vergils Georgica beschrieben werden können, nehmen die Plantarum libri VI literarische Techniken verschiedener antiker Texte auf und entwickeln sie fort. Die systematisch angelegte Studie erschließt die beiden im selben Jahrzehnt entstandenen, thematisch verwandten lateinischen Gedichte zunächst inhaltlich; dabei wird auch versucht, die Pflanzen nach moderner Nomenklatur zu identifizieren. Die weitere Untersuchung gilt den formalen Eigenheiten der Texte; besondere Berücksichtigung erfährt ihr Verhältnis zur literarischen Tradition der griechisch-römischen Antike. Detaillierte Textanalysen lassen die Mechanismen erkennen, nach denen die Imitation bzw. produktive Rezeption im einzelnen funktioniert. Tabellarisch gegliederte deutsche Inhaltsparaphrasen geben Latinisten wie Nicht-Latinisten Übersicht über die umfangreichen Texte

    This work is a study of two Neo-Latin poems of the 17th century: Renè Rapin`s Hortorum libri IV, dealing with contemporary French garden architecture, and Cowley`s Plantarum libri VI, in which the plants are personified and botanical information is embedded in various mythological and historical narratives. The author examines both the subject matter and the formal characteristics of the two poems. Her textual analysis focusses in particular on their use of classical models. Die Studie untersucht zwei im selben Jahrzehnt entstandene, thematisch miteinander verwandte lateinische Gedichte aus der Zeit des europäischen Barock: Die Hortorum libri IV des französischen Jesuiten Renè Rapin, die in mehr als 3250 lateinischen Hexametern den französischen Gartenbau zu Beginn seiner großen Blütezeit darstellen, und die Plantarum libri VI (ca. 7000 Verse) des englischen Dichters Abraham Cowley, in denen Pflanzen mit ihren botanischen Eigenschaften als Personen in mythologisch-historischen Erzählzusammenhängen auftreten.

    "Combining an analysis of literature and art, this book contends that the 'domesticated landscape' is key to understanding women's complex negotiation of private and public life in a period of revolution and transition. As more women became engaged in horticultural and botanical pursuits, the meaning of gardens - recognized here both as sites of pleasure and labor, and as conceptual and symbolic spaces - became more complex. Women writers and artists often used gardens to educate their readers, to enter into political and cultural debates, and to signal moments of intellectual and spiritual insight.     Rapins Hortorum libri IV sind ein antikisierendes Lehrgedicht, das den zeitgenössischen Gartenbau in Frankreich als Höhepunkt der Entwicklung auf diesem Gebiet feiert. In den Plantarum libri VI läßt Cowley die Pflanzen als Personen in mythologisch-historischen Erzählzusammenhängen auftreten, ohne darüber pflanzenkundliche Aspekte zu vernachlässigen. Während die Hortorum libri IV vor allem als Nachahmung von Vergils Georgica beschrieben werden können, nehmen die Plantarum libri VI literarische Techniken verschiedener antiker Texte auf und entwickeln sie fort. Die systematisch angelegte Studie erschließt die beiden im selben Jahrzehnt entstandenen, thematisch verwandten lateinischen Gedichte zunächst inhaltlich; dabei wird auch versucht, die Pflanzen nach moderner Nomenklatur zu identifizieren. Die weitere Untersuchung gilt den formalen Eigenheiten der Texte; besondere Berücksichtigung erfährt ihr Verhältnis zur literarischen Tradition der griechisch-römischen Antike. Detaillierte Textanalysen lassen die Mechanismen erkennen, nach denen die Imitation bzw. produktive Rezeption im einzelnen funktioniert. Tabellarisch gegliederte deutsche Inhaltsparaphrasen geben Latinisten wie Nicht-Latinisten Übersicht über die umfangreichen Texte
