    Abstract. Using the methods of Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIS&T) to analyze historical data has been of increasing interest to the scientific community of History in the last two decades. The spatial turn in the Humanities fueled this development and lead to a number of scientific initiatives that utilized GIS&T to store, analyze and visualize historical data accordingly. This article, documenting ongoing work, outlines the scientific developments, main research foci, and past and current research interests of the emerging field of historical GIS from the beginning of the spatial turn in the social sciences to the present day. The article is using a literature review in the fields of Geographic Information Science and History as core methodology. Our main findings are centered around the fact that historical GIS research is spread out over a variety of disciplines and journals. Hence, building a methodological and theoretical core, and forming cohesion in the field has been challenging. Current research trends underpin this trend. Nevertheless, a number of promising research initiatives are pursued at the intersection of GIS&T and History – which documents an intensification of the collaboration between both fields.

    This paper examines the consequences of the commuter transport revolution on working class labour markets in 1930s London. The ability to commute alleviated urban crowding and increased workers’ choice of potential employers. Using GIS-based data constructed from the New Survey of London Life and Labour, we examine the extent of commuting and estimate the earnings returns to commuting. We obtain a lower-bound estimate of two percent increase in earnings per kilometer travelled. We also show that commuting was an important contributor to improving quality of life in the early-twentieth century.

    Im Projekt „Quantifizierung und Regionalisierung des Wertes von Waldökosystemleistungen in Deutschland (ReWaLe)“ wird der ökonomische Nutzen von Ökosystemleistungen des Waldes analysiert. Betrachtet werden dabei insbesondere die Waldökosystemleistungen Rohholzproduktion, Klimaschutz, Erholungsleistung sowie verschiedene Leistungen im Bereich Naturschutz und Landschaftspflege. Das in diesem Rahmen entwickelte Modell kombiniert Bewertungsdaten mit regional-statistischen Informationen anhand von Bewertungsfunktionen, die in einem geografischen Informationssystem (GIS) implementiert sind, und visualisiert die Ergebnisse. Die regionalen Daten werden mithilfe von Geodatenbanken verwaltet und können somit für die Modellberechnung angewendet werden. Das Modell ReWaLe besteht aus einer Toolbox, in der die verschiedenen Bewertungsberechnungen implementiert sind. Die Anwendung ist sowohl über Eingabemasken als auch über Scripte möglich. Simulationen, wie sich Änderungen in der Waldwirtschaft auf die ökonomische Waldleistung auswirken, lassen sich durch die Variation der Eingangsdaten in das Modell abbilden.Die vorliegende technische Dokumentation zum Modell ReWaLe (Regionalisierung des ökonomischen Wertes von Waldleistungen) umfasst, neben einer kurzen Einleitung, Informationen zu im Projekt verwendeten und zur Verfügung stehenden Datengrundlagen, die für das Modell relevante Datenaufbereitung und -bearbeitung sowie die Beschreibung der Implementierung der Bewertungsberechnungen im geografischen Informationssystem. Dabei werden ebenso lizenzrechtliche Nutzungshinweise, das verwendete Koordinatensystem sowie die Definition von Wald im Projekt erläutert. In the project "Quantification and regionalisation of the value of forest ecosystem services in Germany (ReWaLe)", the economic benefits of forest ecosystem services are analysed. In particular, the forest ecosystem services of raw wood production, climate protection, recreational services and various services for nature protection and landscape preservation are considered. The model developed within this framework combines valuation data with regional statistical information applying valuation functions implemented in a geographic information system (GIS) and visualises the results. The regional data are managed with the help of geodatabases and can thus be applied to the model calculation. The ReWaLe model consists of a toolbox in which the various valuation functions are implemented. The application is possible via input masks as well as scripts. Simulations of how changes in forest management affect economic forest values can be done by varying the input data into the model. This technical documentation for the ReWaLe model (regionalisation of the economic value of forest services) includes a brief introduction, information on the data basis used and available in the project, the data preparation and processing relevant for the model, and a description of the implementation of the valuation functions in the geographic information system. In addition, information on licensing rights, the coordinate system used and the definition of forest in the project are explained.

    Luftverschmutzung ist ein bedeutender Risikofaktor für die Gesundheit. Im vorliegenden Gutachten wurde untersucht, ob eine Differenzierung der Feinstaubexposition der Bevölkerung in Deutschland nach sozioökonomischem Status möglich ist. Zur Abschätzung der Feinstaubexposition wurde eine flächendeckende Darstellung der PM2.5 Hintergrundbelastung in räumlicher Auflösung von 2 x 2 km² genutzt, ergänzt um höher aufgelöste Datensätze für die Städte Hamburg (Gesamtbelastung, 100 x 100 m²) und Berlin (Hintergrundbelastung, 500 x 500 m²) für zusätzliche lokale Analysen. Als flächendeckende Indikatoren für den sozioökonomischen Status (SES) der Wohnbevölkerung wurden das jährliche Haushaltsnettoeinkommen (1 x 1 km²) sowie Mietund Kaufspiegel in €/m² (Baublockebene) verwendet. Nach verschiedenen Schritten der Datenaufbereitung (Baublockflächenkorrektur, Bevölkerungsgewichtung, räumliche Aggregation, SESStandardisierung auf Gemeindeebene) wurden die jeweiligen Variablen für die drei Untersuchungsräume verschnitten und anhand von räumlichen Regressionsmodellen sowie varianzanalytischen Verfahren (ANOVA) auf statistische Zusammenhänge untersucht. In einigen Fällen waren signifikante Zusammenhänge zwischen Feinstaub- und SES-Variablen festzustellen, allerdings waren diese eher schwach ausgeprägt und nicht konsistent in den verschiedenen Untersuchungsräumen. Letztlich ließen die Daten somit keine belastbaren Aussagen zur Differenzierung der Feinstaubexposition zu, denn die flächendeckend verfügbaren Variablen für den SES der Bevölkerung waren nur eingeschränkt aussagekräftig. Die Variable Haushaltseinkommen wurde zwar als inhaltlich gut geeigneter SES-Indikator bewertet, war räumlich aber zu grob aufgelöst um kleinräumige Unterschiede abzubilden. Miet- und Kaufspiegel wiederum boten zwar eine geeignete räumliche Auflösung, geben den sozioökonomischen Status der Bevölkerung jedoch inhaltlich nur eingeschränkt wieder. Für eine bundesweite Differenzierung der Exposition gegenüber Feinstaub nach SES bräuchten zukünftige Studien vor allem flächendeckende Datensätze in präziserer räumlicher Auflösung. Air pollution is a significant risk factor for human health. This study investigated the possibility for differentiating the population exposure to particulate matter by socio-economic status in Germany. A nationwide dataset on PM2.5 background concentrations at a resolution of 2 x 2 km² was used to quantify exposure. PM2.5 datasets for the cities of Hamburg (total concentrations at 100 x 100 m²) and Berlin (background concentrations at 500 x 500 m²) were used for additional local analyses. The annual net household income (at 1 x 1 km²) as well as housing rent and purchase price indices (at block level) were used as indicators for socio-economic status (SES). Data pre-processing included validation of housing block data, population weighting, spatial aggregation and SES-standardization at municipal level. The relevant variables for the three study areas were overlaid and their statistical relationships examined using spatial regression and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) models. Some correlations between particulate matter concentrations and SES variables were significant but weak in magnitude, without clear trends and not fully consistent across the study areas. Overall, the data thus did not allow for a reliable differentiation of PM2.5 exposure as the variables with country-wide coverage offered only limited information on the population’s SES. The household income variable was considered to be a meaningful indicator for SES but its spatial resolution was too coarse to depict fine-scale variations. Residential rent and purchase price indices on the other hand had an appropriate spatial resolution but represented SES only in approximation. In order to differentiate exposure to particulate matter by SES in Germany, future studies would require nationwide datasets with finer spatial resolutions.

    Cultural Landscape Characteristics and Heritage Values A Spatially Explicit Hedonic Approach This paper uses the hedonic approach to analyze the relation between cultural landscape characteristics and property values. The empirical model uses geographic information systems to create a model that adds spatially explicit variables of landscape structure to the classic hedonic variables. Nearly 5000 house transactions in south Sweden were studied to estimate the effects of cultural landscape attributes on transaction prices. The key empirical results show that cultural heritage sites generate a premium of 3-4% for properties located in the vicinity. The results also show that the percentage of land within communities devoted to local and national preservation areas leads to a considerable increase in house prices (up to 12%) comparing to communities that have less land devoted to preservation areas.

    The three-decade war in Sri Lanka left parts of the northern and eastern regions severely destroyed. Those regions are populated by minority and marginalized ethnic groups. The expectation is that aid flows to those regions to rebuild after the war as they need the aid more than other places. Nonetheless, the regions are underdeveloped, and the underlying issues which caused the war are yet to be addressed. Hence, this paper aims to answer the research question, 'Are conflict-affected districts a priority in aid allocation in postwar Sri Lanka?' This paper is primarily concerned about the aid allocation post-conflict. However, since the tsunami hit Sri Lanka in 2004, we use the aid allocation from the post-disaster environment to reveal aid patterns and potential biases. The paper uses GIS geocoding, mapping, spatial analysis, and econometric analysis to understand whether: (i) tsunami-affected districts received more aid than others, (ii) war-affected districts received more aid than others, (iii) economically developed districts receive less aid than others. The paper uses AidData on World Bank, Chinese, and the author's collected data on Asian Development Bank aid projects, 2002-2015. The study finds that donors do not respond to the needs of the recipient country. The maps and the analysis show that aid projects are predominantly in southern regions of the country and not in the war-affected districts.
