    The authorexamines the historical context of instructions for the everyday conduct of prosperous Christians and the authors of these instruction manuals from 200 AD and links this examination with a study of attitudes towardsthe human body as revealed in the instructions. The volume shows how, far from denying the body, the standards relating to health display a legitimate concern for bodily well-being. At the same time, however, there is a fear of the body, which makes it necessary to keep it constantly under control. Key Features it makes a contribution to the intensive research at present being conducted into the "Second Sophistic" it combines historical, philological, and theological methods and insights it is also of relevance for the history of medicine.

    The Cape Flats, a windswept, barren and sandy area which rings Cape Town, is home to more than a million people. Many live here in sprawling shack settlements. The post-apartheid state is attempting to eradicate such settlements by providing formal houses in planned residential estates. Raw Life, New Hope is a longitudinal study of the residents of one such shack settlement, The Park, who moved to new, 'formal' houses in The Village, at the turn of the millennium. It introduces readers to core social science topics and modes of theorising. Over 17 years the author has traced how ordinary people attempt to live in accord with their ideals of decency under almost impossible circumstances, and the effects of material changes in their lives after 1994, including the provision of housing. Photos, maps, anecdotes, recipes and philosophical reflections on subjects that arose during conversations elicit a sense of the everyday and of how people try to solve the problems of poverty.

    Memories of My Town is an exploration into how town dwellers experience their environment in a complicated way. As people in urban milieus relate themselves to the environment, this takes place on many levels, where especially the time level becomes problematic. The urban buildings and settings can be looked upon as a kind of collective history, as carriers or witnesses of times past. But it is only the town dwellers that experience urban time itself, the time they live in, but through their memories also times past. In this past some elements take symbolically dense expressions. Through reliving and narrating their experiences the symbolically important factors in this urban relationship will be outlined for investigations concerning three towns, Helsinki, the capital, Vyborg, the ceded and lost Karelian town, and Jyväskylä, a town with dense commercial and cultural dimensions in the middle of Finland. The aim of the book is to use different theoretical concepts as guidelines in analysing the different narrative texts.

    Abstract: Der größte Teil der pädagogischen Werke Deweys wurde geschrieben, bevor seine philosophische Methode ausgereift war. Die pädagogische Dewey-Forschung muss es sich zur Aufgabe machen, die methodologische Diskussion, auf die sich der spätere Dewey konzentriert, erziehungstheoretisch weiterzuführen. Das Ziel dieses Beitrags ist es, beruhend auf Deweys ausgereifter Philosophie auf die Frage einzugehen, ob es möglich ist, den Unterricht, in dem Bedeutungskonstruktion tatsächlich umgesetzt wird, ästhetisch zu gestalten. Dabei wird versucht, die Beziehung zwischen Lehrhandeln und Lernerfahrung, welche die Grundstruktur des Unterrichts bildet, einer ästhetischen Analyse zu unterziehen und aus der Diskussion über Medien und Ausdrucksakt zu folgern, was die pädagogische Kommunikation in der Schule sein soll. Damit wird herausgearbeitet, dass Untersuchung (inquiry) eigentlich darauf ausgerichtet ist, die Erfahrung ästhetisch zu vollenden, und dass erfolgreicher ... Abstract: Most of Dewey's educational work was written before his philosophical method had matured. Educational research on Dewey must focus on constructively developing the methodological discussion on which the later Dewey focuses in terms of educational theory. Based on Dewey's mature philosophy, this paper aims to address whether school lessons in which the construction of meaning is actually accomplished can be aesthetically designed. For this purpose, an attempt is made to subject the relationship between teaching experience and learning experience, which forms the basic structure of lessons, to an aesthetic analysis, and to deduce, from the discussion about media and act of expression, what the educational communication at school should be. This highlights the fact that inquiry is actually directed at the aesthetic consummation of experience and that successful lessons are based on the aesthetic inquiry conducted at school.
