    Das Goethejahr 1999 fiel in eine Zeit aufgeregtester Diskussion über ,Globalisierung'. Goethes Begriff der ›Weltliteratur Die Arbeit versucht, Goethes fragmentarisches Weltliteraturkonzept so zu rekonstruieren, daß seine drei wichtigsten Dimensionen - historische Diagnose, moralischer Appell und klassizistische Poetik der Moderne - gleichgewichtig zur Geltung kommen. Dazu wird im ersten Teil jene Theoriedebatte des 18. Jahrhunderts umrissen, die die Bildung des Begriffs ,Weltliteratur' in der Sattelzeit ermöglichte: die Anerkennung kultureller Verschiedenheit in der Philosophie der Aufklärung (Montesquieu u.a.); die Diskussion über die heraufziehende Weltgesellschaft bei Autoren wie Rousseau, Adam Smith und Kant; die Überlegungen Herders und Humboldts zum Prozeß ,nationalliterarischer' Besonderung und interkultureller Verflechtung. Der zweite Teil verfolgt anhand exemplarischer Texte die Genese von Goethes Weltliteratur-Begriff in drei Schritten: von den als Reaktion auf die Französische Revolution entstandenen »Unterhaltungen deutscher Ausgewanderten« (1795) über den »West-östlichen Divan« (1814-19) bis hin zu Goethes Weltliteratur-Publizistik der zwanziger Jahre in seiner Zeitschrift »Über Kunst und Altertum«

    "This study addresses the question of artistic identity and the myth of the artist as it has been shaped by the artists themselves. While the term artist is to be understood in a broad sense, the focus of this study is the literature of the Romantic tradition. Identity is largely perceived as a construct, and a central hypothesis of this book concerns its aesthetic value and the ways it creates dominant narratives of self-perception that produce powerful myths. The construction of the artist's identity, be it collective or personal, rests on a series of aesthetic praxes. Caught between the mythic idealisation of poetic genius and its social devaluation, the Romantic artist seeks to create a place for himself, and in doing so, he engages in his own mythmaking. This process is studied in an interdisciplinary perspective, approaching texts and writers from different traditions. The study analyses various typologies of the artist, numerous mythmaking strategies as well as several postural techniques; all of which have sketched major direct or indirect fictional self-portraits in the European tradition"--

    Exploring the experiments in individual and national self-consciousness conducted during the Romantic period, this essential comparative study of European literature, philosophy and politics makes original and often surprising connections and contrasts to reveal how personal and social identities were re-orientated and disorientated from the French Revolution onwards. Reviving a contested moment in the history of aesthetic theory, this study shows how the growing awareness of irresolution in Kant's third Kritik allowed Romantic writers to put the aesthetic to radical uses not envisaged by its parent philosophy. It also recounts how they would go on to force philosophy to revise received notions of authority, empowering women and subordinated ethnic groups to re-orientate existing hierarchies. The sheer range and variety of writers covered is testament both to the breadth of writing that Kant's philosophy so rashly legitimated and to the wider importance of philosophy to the understanding of Romantic literature

    Our perception of the Others is based on our conception of ourselves. In theory the Others should be different. If necessary, we alter their images to accommodate the apperception of ourselves. Thus Chinesia, an amalgamation of facts and fiction, was created. In order to avoid previous repetition of stereotypes and prejudices, the present study re-examines the parameters which created Chinesia and traces its development to the end of the 18th century. It discusses the reports of the European seafarers and trade embassies to China and analyzes the situation of the Jesuit missionaries and their European publications on China. These helped to develop a wondrous China during Baroque and early Enlightenment which, however, gradually became offensive to Christian pride.- After Christian Wolff was dismissed from the University of Halle and banished from Prussia for eulogizing Confucianism, China was steadily downgraded, particularly by the historicists who were re-evaluating the position of Europe in World History. The white race was perceived as superior to all other races (David Hume and Kant); consequently, the complexion of the Chinese became increasingly yellower. It darkened from the Meerschaum hue (Lichtenberg) to the color of dried orange peels (Gobineau) toward the end of the 19th century. Finally, the Chinese were considered to be too stupid to have created the Chinese culture. The literary works of these periods reflect this development. The literary study begins with the analysis of European dramatization of the Manchu Conquest of China and its subsequent fictional Christianization. Then the Jesuit plays with Chinese themes are discussed, for the first time in literary history.- Also analyzed is the reception of the Chinese Orphan motive in European literature which was the turning point in downgrading China, and subsequently Montesquieu's impact on Albrecht von Haller's novel "Usong" is examined. Thereafter, the study scrutinizes the contradictory positions of Herder and von Seckendorff (or Goethe, for that matter) in Weimar.     Our perception of the Others is based on our conception of ourselves. In theory the Others should be different. If necessary, we alter their images to accommodate the apperception of ourselves. Thus Chinesia, an amalgamation of facts and fiction, was created. In order to avoid previous repetition of stereotypes and prejudices, the present study re-examines the parameters which created Chinesia and traces its development to the end of the 18th century. It discusses the reports of the European seafarers and trade embassies to China and analyzes the situation of the Jesuit missionaries and their European publications on China. These helped to develop a wondrous China during Baroque and early Enlightenment which, however, gradually became offensive to Christian pride.- After Christian Wolff was dismissed from the University of Halle and banished from Prussia for eulogizing Confucianism, China was steadily downgraded, particularly by the historicists who were re-evaluating the position of Europe in World History. The white race was perceived as superior to all other races (David Hume and Kant); consequently, the complexion of the Chinese became increasingly yellower. It darkened from the Meerschaum hue (Lichtenberg) to the color of dried orange peels (Gobineau) toward the end of the 19th century. Finally, the Chinese were considered to be too stupid to have created the Chinese culture. The literary works of these periods reflect this development. The literary study begins with the analysis of European dramatization of the Manchu Conquest of China and its subsequent fictional Christianization. Then the Jesuit plays with Chinese themes are discussed, for the first time in literary history.- Also analyzed is the reception of the Chinese Orphan motive in European literature which was the turning point in downgrading China, and subsequently Montesquieu's impact on Albrecht von Haller's novel "Usong" is examined. Thereafter, the study scrutinizes the contradictory positions of Herder and von Seckendorff (or Goethe, for that matter) in Weimar. The book concludes with a concise analysis of the 'eschatological sinism' of Hegel, Marx and Weber to indicate the development of the later centuries

    Das Goethejahr 1999 fiel in eine Zeit aufgeregtester Diskussion über ,Globalisierung'. Goethes Begriff der ›Weltliteratur Die Arbeit versucht, Goethes fragmentarisches Weltliteraturkonzept so zu rekonstruieren, daß seine drei wichtigsten Dimensionen - historische Diagnose, moralischer Appell und klassizistische Poetik der Moderne - gleichgewichtig zur Geltung kommen. Dazu wird im ersten Teil jene Theoriedebatte des 18. Jahrhunderts umrissen, die die Bildung des Begriffs ,Weltliteratur' in der Sattelzeit ermöglichte: die Anerkennung kultureller Verschiedenheit in der Philosophie der Aufklärung (Montesquieu u.a.); die Diskussion über die heraufziehende Weltgesellschaft bei Autoren wie Rousseau, Adam Smith und Kant; die Überlegungen Herders und Humboldts zum Prozeß ,nationalliterarischer' Besonderung und interkultureller Verflechtung. Der zweite Teil verfolgt anhand exemplarischer Texte die Genese von Goethes Weltliteratur-Begriff in drei Schritten: von den als Reaktion auf die Französische Revolution entstandenen »Unterhaltungen deutscher Ausgewanderten« (1795) über den »West-östlichen Divan« (1814-19) bis hin zu Goethes Weltliteratur-Publizistik der zwanziger Jahre in seiner Zeitschrift »Über Kunst und Altertum«
