    Este libro es un análisis de la censura literaria que Acción Católica (AC) implementó en España, a través del Secretariado de Orientación Bibliográfica (SOB) durante la década de 1940. El texto profundiza en este sistema de juicio y control cultural para demostrar que AC impuso a sus miembros una ideología propia, redefiniendo la literatura hasta convertirla en una herramienta más de su adoctrinamiento social. Como consecuencia, queda demostrado que AC cuestionó el autoritarismo discursivo del franquismo y, a partir de la labor de crítica literaria y de los informes censores analizados, se aporta una nueva perspectiva desde la que reconsiderar la relación entre el catolicismo y la dictadura. El estudio de las desavenencias y de los conflictos ideológicos que surgieron dentro del régimen pone de manifiesto la existencia de discursos diferenciados en ambas instituciones, rompiendo así el espejismo de homogeneidad y armonía aparente. La obra se presenta como una aproximación novedosa a las estrategias de represión cultural adoptadas por la dictadura y la Iglesia en la posguerra que abre una puerta alternativa para el análisis de los mecanismos de control intelectual y social en ese periodo y, además, conecta la bibliografía existente acerca de la cambiante y compleja naturaleza del franquismo con los estudios culturales.

    In der Abhandlung wird erstmals eine Gattungsgeschichte des deutschen Briefromans von den Anfängen im 18. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart präsentiert und als eine Geschichte der Subjektivation beschrieben. Mediale, gesellschaftspolitische und kulturelle Transformationen wirkten wie Katalysatoren auf die Form und Gestalt der Briefromane ein, was insbesondere an den E-Mail- und Facebook- Romanen im 21. Jahrhundert deutlich wird. Briefe, E-Mails, Foreneinträge, Posts und ähnliches geben zugleich als »Egodokumente« Aufschluss über die Konstitution des schreibenden Ichs, dessen Probleme, Gedanken und Gefühle. Die Äußerungen eines Ichs in einem Briefroman werden als Substrat genereller Probleme und Bedürfnisse eines Subjekts zu einer bestimmten Zeit interpretiert und die Transformationen der jeweiligen Subjektkonstruktionen untersucht. Zurückgegriffen wird dabei auf Butlers Begriff der »Subjektivation « und Reckwitz’ »Theorie der Subjektkulturen«. Subjektivation wird in der Abhandlung darüber hinaus als Ziel im bildungsorientierten Deutschunterricht aufgefasst. Es wird ein Modell für einen subjektivationsorientierten Deutschunterricht entworfen, das Persönlichkeitsentwicklung und Identitätsfindung mit dem literarischen Lernen verbindet.

    This conference proceeding (Sessions on "Otherness in Space and Architecture", International Medieval Conference, Leeds, 2017 and 2018) is a compilation of articles written by both young and senior scholars, who are working on the question of the ‘self’ and the ‘other’ in Christian, Jewish and Islamic cultures. The articles examine how material, ‘oriental’ objects and knowledge originating in non-Western communities helped building and strengthening the identity of Iberia’s, southern France and northern Italian nobility and its lineages. It is shown how, in the perception of Christians, the public image of Jews and Moslems became constructed as that of adversaries, while their cultural knowledge, at the same time, would be integrated into Christian culture in a paradox manner, in which the ‘self’ necessarily depends on the ‘other’ and how visual tensions in art and space have been used as symbols of power.

The book takes up three aspects of Beauvoir's work more recent feminists find embarrassing: "bad sex," "dated" views about lesbians, and intersections with race and class. Through close reading of Beauvoir's writing in many genres, alongside contemporaneous discourses (good and bad novels in French and English, outmoded psychoanalytic and sexological authorities, ethnographic surrealism, the writing of Richard Wright and Franz Fanon), and in light of her travels to the U.S. and China, the author uncovers insights more recent feminist methodologies obscure, showing that Beauvoir is still good to think with today.

Whereas feminist literary criticism has broadened the canon of war fiction to include narratives by and about women, queer scholars have seldom focused on literary representations of homosexuality during the war. Natalie Marena Nobitz closes a glaring gap in the critical attention of four novels dealing with the disruption of gender roles and institutionalised heteronormativity: Walter Baxter's Look Down in Mercy (1951), Mary Renault's The Charioteer (1953), Sarah Waters The Night Watch (2006) and Adam Fitzroy's Make Do and Mend (2012).

    Critical Alliances argues that late-Victorian and modernist feminist authors saw in literary representations of female collaboration an opportunity to produce new gender and economic roles for women. It is not often that one thinks of female allegiances – such as kinship networks, cultural inheritance, or lesbian marriage – as influencing the marketplace; nor does one often think of economic models when theorizing feminist cooperation. S. Brooke Cameron suggest that, through their representations of female partnership, feminist authors such as Virginia Woolf, Olive Schreiner, George Egerton, Amy Levy, and Michael Field redefined the gendered marketplace and, with it, women’s professional opportunities.

     

    Interdisciplinary at its core and using a contextual approach, Critical Alliances selects cultural texts and theories relevant to each writer’s particular intervention in the marketplace.     In Race on Display in 20th- and 21st-Century France Knox turns the tables France’s rhetoric of ‘internal otherness’, asking her reader not to spot those deemed France’s others but rather to deconstruct the very gazes that produce them. Weaving together a vast corpus of colonial French children’s comics, Francophone novels, and African popular music, fashion, and dance, Knox traces how the ways colonial ‘human zoos’ invited their French spectators to gaze on their colonized others still inform the frameworks through which racial and ethnic minorities are made—and make themselves—visible in contemporary France. In addition to analyzing how literature and music depicting immigrants and their descendants in France make race and ethnicity visible, Knox also illustrates how the works she analyzes self-reflexively ask whether they, as commodities sold within wider cultural marketplaces, perpetuate the culture of exoticism they seek to contest. Finally, Knox contends that to take seriously the way the texts interrogate the relationship between power, privilege, and the gaze also requires reconsidering the visions of normalcy from which racial and ethnic minorities supposedly depart. She thus concludes by exposing a critical ‘blind spot’ in French cultural studies—whiteness—before subjecting it to the same scrutiny France’s ‘visible minorities’ face.

    Was der gerade im post-jugoslawischen Raum heute wieder diskursprägende ‘nationale’ Blick auf die Kultur verbirgt, das zeigt diese Untersuchung, in der kanonische Literatur aus dem 19. Jahrhundert auf ihre geopoetische Vielschichtigkeit hin betrachtet wird, wie sie für imperiale Räume typisch ist.

     

    Die imperialen Strukturen, wie sie den europäischen Raum politisch und kulturell über Jahrhunderte prägten, sind auch für die südslavischen Identitäts- und Gemeinschaftsentwürfe aus der Zeit der ‚Entdeckung des Nationalen‘ von großer Bedeutung. Insbesondere die Literatur in ihrer Fähigkeit, Uneindeutiges, Überlagertes und Verschobenes mitzutransportieren, kann zeigen, wie sich das imperiale Moment vielschichtig und teilweise auch widersprüchlich in mentalen Karten, narrativen Konstruktionen von Eigen- und Fremdräumen, von Zentren und Peripherien, Grenz- und Kommunikationsräumen sowie von pluralen Identitäten niederschlägt. Eine geopoetische Betrachtung der Literaturen der Romantik jenseits des Nationalen eröffnet neue Perspektiven auf die jeweiligen nationalen Referenzepochen der heutigen Bosnier*innen, Kroat*innen, Montenegriner*innen, Serb*innen und Sloven*innen und legt die Grundlagen für eine transnational pluralistische Literaturgeschichtsschreibung im postjugoslawischen Raum.

    This book presents the first comparative study of notable literary shipwrecks from the past four thousand years, focusing on Homer’s Odyssey, Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe. James V. Morrison considers the historical context as well as the “triggers” (such as the 1609 Bermuda shipwreck) that inspired some of these works, and modern responses such as novels (Golding’s Lord of the Flies, Coetzee’s Foe, and Gordon’s First on Mars, a science fiction version of the Crusoe story), movies, television (Forbidden Planet, Cast Away, and Lost), and the poetry and plays of Caribbean poets Derek Walcott and Aimé Césaire.

     

    For survivors who are stranded on an island for some period of time, shipwrecks often present the possibility of a change in political and social status—as well as romance and even paradise. In each of the major shipwreck narratives examined, the poet or novelist links the castaways’ arrival on a new shore with the possibility of a new sort of life.

    Which forms of agency does literature offer to the reader in the twenty-first century? This study investigates migrant lives in contemporary fiction published by young British Asian writers. Examining the protagonists’ ideas of ›success‹ in becoming a full member of their society, Jessica Fischer carves out the naturalised model of homo economicus in these texts and in contemporary fiction more generally. She draws attention to the enterprising self as the preferred subject in today’s hegemonic discourses and postulates a new conceptualisation of ›agency‹. This book offers an interdisciplinary approach to narratives of transformation. Moreover, it is an urgently needed combination of cultural and postcolonial studies that tackles ethical questions concerning the normative construction of the subject in identity politics.

    Les conflits en France entre 1500 et 1800, qui résultent entre autres de bouleversements confessionnels (les guerres de Religion), politiques (la monarchie absolue) ou concernant l'histoire des idées (les Lumières), font naître un vaste panorama de poèmes épiques aux sujets mythiques, historiques, bibliques ou scientifiques. Depuis les premiers essais épiques au temps des guerres d'Italie jusqu'aux Colombiades au XVIIIe siècle, la dimension de la guerre, qui se veut une constante dans la tradition du genre depuis Homère, ainsi que celle de la paix, liée à la vision d'un âge d'or chez Virgile, sont représentées et évaluées de manière variée et polyvalente. Ces variations dépendent du modèle épique choisi, des considérations poétologiques ainsi que de l'arrière-plan socioculturel auquel les poètes appartiennent. Elles concernent tant la représentation de la violence sur les champs de bataille que la conception et la modélisation du héros épique. Au sein d'un genre fortement codifié émergent donc de multiples essais qui conçoivent de nouveaux regards sur la guerre et la paix tout en les intégrant dans le répertoire de la tradition épique.

    Till Hennings untersucht anhand der überlieferten Handschriften die Sammlung von Dichtung im Ostfrankenreich des 9. Jahrhunderts. Dabei werden die Verbindungen zwischen Institutionen und Personen im kulturellen Netzwerk der karolingischen renovatio offengelegt. Für zahlreiche Handschriften wird erstmals eine kodikologische Untersuchung nach modernen Gesichtspunkten vorgenommen. Diese Analyse der Nutzung der Handschriften ergibt eine Neusituierung der Dichtung bezüglich ihrer Multifunktionalität innerhalb der vielfältigen institutionell-pragmatischen Kontexte. Insbesondere das Verhältnis von Schule und Dichtung wird konkretisiert und gezeigt, dass Dichtung nicht nur Schullektüre und Handschriften mit Dichtung nicht nur Schulbücher waren. Die strukturelle Ordnung des Bandes nach Skriptorien ist ferner ein Beitrag zur Bildungsgeschichte der einzelnen Schreiborte. The topic of this volume is the Collection of Poetry in 9th century East Francia on the basis of the surviving manuscripts. It gives a fresh look on the connections between institutions and persons in the network of the Carolingian 'renovatio'. Many manuscripts have been analysed here according to modern codicological standards for the first time. The analysis of the use of the manuscripts has resulted in a new appraisal of poetry in the institutional and pragmatic contexts of the time. The topic of the educational use of poetry has been greatly expanded in this context. The arrangent of the study in terms of single scriptoria has also presents a educational history of these institutions.

    In this original study, Siobhán McIlvanney examines the beginnings of the women’s press in France. Figurations of the Feminine is the first work in English to assess the most significant publications which make up this diverse, yet critically neglected, medium. It traces the evolving representations of womanhood that appear over the first ninety years of women’s journals in France. McIlvanney’s insightful readings demonstrate that these journals are often characterised by a remarkable degree of ‘feminist’ content. This refutes the general conception of the women’s press as an idealised, hyper-feminised space inhabited by the intellectually idle – whether in the form of readers or writers – disseminating and legitimating a limited range of patriarchal stereotypes and idées reçues. Through textual analyses of different ‘generic’ subsections, whether the literary journal, the fashion magazine, the domestic press or more explicitly politicised outputs, Figurations of the Feminine challenges the critical commonplaces which have been applied to the women’s press since its genesis, both in France and elsewhere. It demonstrates the political richness of this medium and the privileged perspectives it gives us on female self-expression and on the everyday lives of French women from across the class spectrum during this key historical period.
