"How did Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population go from being the objectified subjects of documentary films to the directors and producers in the digital age? What prompted these changes and how and when did this decolonisation of documentary film production occur? Taking a long historical perspective, this book is based on a study of a selection of Australian documentary films produced by and about Aboriginal peoples since the early twentieth century. The films signpost significant shifts in Anglo-Australian attitudes about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and trace the growth of the Indigenous filmmaking industry in Australia. The study considers how developments in camera and film stock technologies along with filmic techniques influenced the depiction of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. The films are also examined within their historical context, employing them to gauge how social attitudes, access to funding and political pressures influenced their production values. Used as a form of resistance to the imposition of colonialism, filmmaking gave Aboriginal people greater control over their depiction on documentary film and the medium has become an avenue to contest widely held assumptions about a peaceful colonial settlement. The book aims to expose the course of race relations in Australia through the decolonisation of documentary film by Aboriginal filmmakers, tracing their struggle to achieve social justice and self-representation"--

    This collection of essays offers a critical assessment of Labour in a Single Shot, a groundbreaking documentary video workshop. From 2011 to 2014, curator Antje Ehmann and film- and videomaker Harun Farocki produced an art project of truly global proportions. They travelled to fifteen cities around the world to conduct workshops inspired by cinema history’s first film, Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory, shot in 1895 by the Lumière brothers in France. While the workshop videos are in colour and the camera was not required to remain static, Ehmann and Farocki’s students were tasked with honouring the original Lumière film’s basic parameters of theme and style. The fascinating result is a collection of more than 550 short videos that have appeared in international exhibitions and on an open-access website, offering the widest possible audience the opportunity to ponder contemporary labour in multiple contexts around the world.

    Die raum-zeitliche Konfiguration „Israel-Palästina“ ist das hochmediatisierte und affektiv aufgeladene Wahrnehmungsobjekt par excellence. Immer wieder stellt sich das „Nahostproblem“ auf der Ebene von kinematographischen und massenmedialen Bildern und Tönen. Peter Grabhers Studie untersucht, wie sich die audiovisuelle Repräsentationen Palästina-Israels und die visuellen Kulturen seit 1960 verändert haben und wie darauf die Essayfilme von Filmautor*innen der Avantgarde reagieren. Welche transgressiven Strategien entwickelte das zwischen Dokument und Fiktion changierende essayistische Kino? Was vermögen diese in Richtung einer Transfiguration der Wahrnehmung des Chronotopos „Palästina-Israel“? Grabher untersucht einen exemplarischen Korpus von Essayfilmen, die am Blick arbeiten und ihn verändern. Im ersten Teil der Untersuchung arbeitet er Fragestellungen und filmanalytische Methoden aus und referiert die Entfaltung der seit dem frühen Kino virulenten Idee eines "denkenden Bildes". Ausgehend von Eisenstein, Astruc und Richter wird die Poetik des filmischen Essayismus bis hin zur aktuellen Diskussion dargestellt. Die Analyse von vier filmischen „Kraftfeldern“ bildet schließlich den Kern der Arbeit. In dichten Beschreibungen wird gezeigt, wie französische (Chris Marker, Jean-Luc Godard/Anne-Marie Miéville), israelische (Ariella Azoulay/Udi Aloni) und palästinensische Filmautor*innen (Ula Tabari/Elia Suleiman) in ihren Filmen auf dominante Repräsentationen und kollektive Narrative eingehen und diese ästhetisch überschreiten. Die Analyse setzt 1960 ein, dem Jahr der Verhaftung Adolf Eichmanns, die jüngsten Filmbeispiele gehören der „Post-9/11-Welt“ an. Produktionsgenealogie, Poetik und Rezeption von emblematischen Filmen wie Chris Markers „Beschreibung eines Kampfes“ (1960) und des titelgebenden Hier und anderswo (1976) von Jean-Luc Godard und Anne-Marie Miéville werden erstmals umfassend dargestellt. Mit Ariella Azoulays The Angel of History (2000) und Udi Alonis Mechilot (2006) werden zwei radikale Werke des aktuellen israelischen Kinos analysiert; mit Ula Tabaris Jinga48 und Elia Suleimans The Time That Remains (2009) zwei Schlüsselwerke des aktuellen palästinensischen Kinos. Im Kontext der medialen Repräsentation des israelisch-palästinensischen Problems, in dem Bilder Mittel und Schauplatz des Krieges sind, die als affektauslösende Objektivitätsbehauptungen die Wahrnehmung kapern, kommt diesen Beispielen einer essayistischen Ästhetik eine radikale politische Bedeutung zu.

    This book analyses the authoring of ethnographic films between 1895 and 2015. It is based on the general argument that the ethnographicness of a film should not be gauged according to whether it is about an exotic culture, but rather by the degree to which it conforms to the norms of ethnographic practice more generally. On these grounds, it considers films made in a broad range of styles, on a wide range of topics and in many different parts of the world. For the period before the Second World War, it discusses films made within reportage, travel and melodrama genres as well as more conventionally ethnographic films. In the postwar period, it examines the work of film-makers such as John Marshall, Asen Balikci, Ian Dunlop and Timothy Asch and considers the modes of authorship developed by Jean Rouch, Robert Gardner and Colin Young. It also discusses films authored by indigenous subjects using video technology from the 1970s, and the ethnographic films that flourished on British television until the 1990s. In the final part, it examines the recent work of David and Judith MacDougall, the Harvard Sensory Ethnography Lab, and various films authored in a participatory manner as possible models for the future.

    Documentaries such as Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman's Born into Brothels, Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, Jeffrey Blitz's Spellbound, along with March of the Penguins and An Inconvenient Truth have achieved critical as well as popular success. Although nonfiction film may have captured imaginations, many viewers enter and leave theaters with a nanve concept of "truth" and "reality"-for them, documentaries are information sources. But is truth or reality readily available, easily acquired, or undisputed? Or do documentaries convey illusions of truth and reality? What aesthetic means are used to build these illusions? A documentary's sounds and images are always the product of selection and choice, and often underscore points the filmmaker wishes to make. Crafting Truth illuminates the ways these films tell their stories; how they use the camera, editing, sound, and performance; what rhetorical devices they employ; and what the theoretical, practical, and ethical implications of these choices are. Complex documentary concepts are presented through easily accessible language, images, and a discussion of a wide range of films and videos to encourage new ways of thinking about and seeing nonfiction film

    On January 9, 1866, a formal ceremony opened the doors of Fisk Free Colored School to educate whites and newly freed slaves in Nashville, Tennessee. This dissertation will argue that from the institution's opening in 1866, Fisk University Library evolved from a passive role of providing materials for students, faculty, and the public to a leadership role in the effort to collect, preserve, and shape the study of African American history and culture. By the twenty-first century, the library was a premier African American historical organization with connections to every sub-field of public history: oral history, archival science, historic preservation, programming, museum curatorship, documentary films, and digital humanities. Overall, this research will explore the various ways an underrepresented and under-studied group of people used their power and agency to produce a new historical narrative that included the contributions of Africans and African Americans to global society.

During the twentieth century, the invention of new technologies of audiovisual representation such as cinema, television, video, and digital media have transformed the modes of historical narration and with it forced historians to assess the impact of new visual technologies on the construction of history. This book investigates the manner in which this contemporary Western "crisis" in historical narrative is produced by a larger epistemological shift in visual culture. Ricciardelli uses the theme of war as depicted in these directors’ films to focus her study and look at the model(s) of national identity that Burns, Morris, and Moore shape through their depictions of US military actions. She examines how postcolonial critiques of historicism and the advent of digitization have affected the narrative structure of documentary film and the shaping of historical consciousness through cinematic representation.
