    Political Magic examines early modern British fictions of exploration and colonialism, arguing that narratives of intercultural contact reimagine ideas of sovereignty and popular power. These fictions reveal aspects of political thought in this period that official discourse typically shunted aside, particularly the political status of the commoner, whose "liberty" was often proclaimed even as it was undermined both in theory and in practice. Like the Hobbesian sovereign, the colonist appears to the colonized as a giver of rules who remains unruly.At the heart of many texts are moments of savage wonder, provoked by European displays of technological prowess. In particular, the trope of the first gunshot articulates an origin of consent and political legitimacy in colonial showmanship. Yet as manifestations of force held in abeyance, these technologies also signal the ultimate reliance of sovereigns on extreme violence as the lessthan-mystical foundation of their authority.By examining works by Cavendish, Defoe, Behn, Swift, and Haywood in conjunction with contemporary political writing and travelogues, Political Magic locates a subterranean discourse of sovereignty in the century after Hobbes, finding surprising affinities between the government of "savages" and of Britons

    The Additions to Daniel 3 fill the narrative gap of the Hebrew and Aramaic text with worship as if in a heavenly temple, offering a perspective over the entire cosmos. The Song of the Three in particular draws the whole created realm into this architecture, reminiscent of the heavenly journeys of the apocalypses. Comparison with parallels from the Enoch literature and liturgical texts from Qumran suggests a purpose behind the Daniel scribes' adaptation of these literary materials. Through their apocalyptic borrowings, the Additions to Daniel 3 assert the full sanctity of the Hasmonean temple and thus also provide a script for the later reception of this text in church consecrations.

    A review of Coen criticism, specifically attending to Elijah Siegler’s recent, significant collection of essays, indicates that Coen brothers’ films frame characters in harsh, amoral worlds. This esthetic "framing" is similar not only to Camus’ analysis of the absurd, but also to the "feel" of some biblical narratives. Where Camus urges one to move beyond the absurd to absurd creation and biblical narratives press on to faith - at least, in most religious readings of them - the Coens laugh. A selective overview of the use of bibles in Coen brothers’ films demonstrates that the Coens’ biblical hermeneutic is risible. Their films frame bibles in amoral worlds, displace the Holy Bible, deploy popular bibles, twist and subvert bibles, reduce bibles to implicit backgrounds, and use bibles to laugh at characters, stories, and the human condition. In this, the Coens are also laughing at themselves. The article concludes by asking whether the Coens’ hermeneutic can help academics read biblical narratives differently and, perhaps, even learn to laugh at themselves as they read.

    Während Schutzengel in der Bibelwissenschaft gerne thematisiert werden, sind kriegerische und kämpfende Engelwesen hingegen bisher in der Angelologie kaum beachtet worden. Die Untersuchung stellt nun erstmalig Kriegsengel bei Daniel und im 2. Makkabäerbuch in den Mittelpunkt und stellt fest, dass jede Schrift ganz eigene, spezifische Vorstellungen von kriegerischen Engeln hat. Im Danielbuch findet sich das Motiv eines Engelkampfes, um die Bedeutung der göttlichen Offenbarung herauszustellen, im 2. Makkabäerbuch erscheinen Engelwesen in Rüstung auf Pferden, um die Makkabäer in der Schlacht auf Erden zu unterstützen. Diese Motive werden traditionsgeschichtlich durchleuchtet und hierzu alt-orientalisches und griechisch-hellenistisches Material herangezogen. [The Angels and the War. An Angelological Motif in the Book of Daniel and in the Second Book of Maccabees] While guardian angels are popular topics in biblical studies, warlike and fighting angels have been barely noticed in angelology so far. The present study focuses for the first time on the issue of the war angels in Daniel and 2 Maccabees, showing that each of the books has its own specific understanding of warlike angels. In the book of Daniel, the motif of a battle of the angels is intended to highlight the meaning of the Divine revelation. In 2 Maccabees, the angelic beings appear in armour on horses to support the Maccabees in their battle on earth. These motifs are analysed against the background of different traditions, assessing Ancient Near Eastern and Greek Hellenistic sources.

    "Reading Old English Biblical Poetry considers the Junius 11 manuscript, the only surviving illustrated book of Old English poetry, in terms of its earliest readers and their multiple strategies of reading and makingmeaning. Junius 11 begins with the Creation story and ends with the final vanquishing of Satan by Jesus. The study is framed by particular attention to the materiality of the manuscript and how that might have informed its early reception, and it broadens considerations of reading beyond those of the manuscript's compiler and possible patron. As a book, Junius 11 reflects a rich and varied culture of reading that existed in and beyond houses of God in England in the tenth and eleventh centuries, and it points to readers who had enough experience to select and find wisdom, narrative pleasure, and a diversity of other things within this orany book's contents."

    Les littératures du Maghreb et d’Afrique subsaharienne constituent un espace symbolique où se déploie le processus d’hybridation et de traduction culturelle. Ce qui se constate dans ces littératures d’Afrique de langue française et portugaise, c’est un travail de disponibilité que l’écrivain opère à l’intérieur de son univers fictionnel en accueillant de nouvelles possibilités d’existence.
