We analyze the extent to which occupational identity is conducive to worker well-being. Using a unique survey dataset of individuals working in the German skilled crafts and trades (2017-18, n=757), we use a novel occupational identity measure that captures identity more broadly than just referring to organizational identification and social group membership, but rather comprises personal and relational elements inherent in one's work. The latter are linked to significant social interactions a worker has in their job and the former to specific work characteristics of the work conducted itself. We find that higher job satisfaction is related to a stronger sense of occupational identity in our sample. This relationship is quite sizable and robust across model specifications, whereas income is not associated with job satisfaction in most models. Occupational identity is positively associated with a number of work characteristics, viz. task significance, task and skill variety, as well as social support, and our analysis shows that identity mediates the influence of these characteristics with regard to job satisfaction.

The renewed scholarly interest in the craft-based mode of competition, work, learning and innovation suggests that there are some unique aspects of the craft's way of doing business. Using a large panel data set, the present paper takes a closer look at this issue by examining the personality characteristics of business owners. Our results confirm that an individual's personality affects the likelihood of self-employment, but certain traits have a different effect in the case of crafts vis-à-vis non-crafts. We interpret this as evidence for the specificity of the 'crafts' at the fundamental level of human personality. Thus, personality traits can influence self-employment decisions differently, depending on the sector or field of entrepreneurship. The paper concludes with implications for policy and research.

Acknowledged as one of the most important sets of early English tapestries, the Four Seasons set at Hatfield House, Hertfordshire, raise many scholarly questions surrounding the design, production and uses of woven tapestry in sixteenth and early-seventeenth century England. In this new study Michael Bath challenges previous assumptions about both their date and their status as 'Sheldon' tapestries, whilst embarking on a long-overdue explication of their subject matter and iconography

Digital transformation determines the long-term viability of SMEs but poses particular challenges for crafts SMEs due to their lack of resources and their individualized products and services. We argue that the unique personality of a crafts owner is a missing link in the literature on the firm-level drivers of digitalization. Using the Big Five personality model, data of 554 crafts SMEs and quantitative methods, our results provide evidence that the personality traits of extraversion and openness are particularly beneficial for overall digitalization in crafts companies. Furthermore, we show that different personality traits are important at different maturity levels of digitalization and that the effect of personality on digitalization is to some extent mediated by the owner's local embeddedness.
