"By the second decade of the twenty-first century, the robust linkage between highbrow literary fiction and progressive liberalism was virtually axiomatic. In a 2014 cover story for National Review, 'Let Your Right Brain Run Free,' Adam Bellow, son of Saul Bellow, exemplified the typical conservative lament when faced with this fact. Unusually, though, Bellow transformed his complaint that a liberal ethos dominates the major institutions of the U.S. literary establishment into an argument for why 'conservative fiction' should be 'the next front in the culture war'. Using the left-brain/right-brain metaphor, Bellow claimed that for too long 'conservatives have favored the rational left brain at the expense of the right,' making the proverbial conservative mind 'hyperdeveloped in one respect, completely undeveloped in another'. By the left side of the conservative mind, Bellow meant the postwar creation of 'a network of think tanks, foundations, magazines, and publishing houses' that were the institutional and intellectual underpinnings of the modern conservative movement. To grow the right side, Bellow believed, conservatives essentially ought to recreate that massive organizational effort to produce American literature instead of political power: 'We need our own writing programs, fellowships, prizes, and so forth'"--

    Bryan M. Santin examines over a half-century of intersection between American fiction and postwar conservatism. He traces the shifting racial politics of movement conservatism to argue that contemporary perceptions of literary form and aesthetic value are intrinsically connected to the rise of the American Right. Instead of casting postwar conservatives as cynical hustlers or ideological fanatics, Santin shows how the long-term rhetorical shift in conservative notions of literary value and prestige reveal an aesthetic antinomy between high culture and low culture. This shift, he argues, registered and mediated the deeper foundational antinomy structuring postwar conservatism itself: the stable social order of traditionalism and the creative destruction of free-market capitalism. Postwar conservatives produced, in effect, an ambivalent double register in the discourse of conservative literary taste that sought to celebrate neo-aristocratic manifestations of cultural capital while condemning newer, more progressive manifestations revolving around racial and ethnic diversity.

While critics in the twentieth century and beyond have upheld originality and innovation as essential characteristics of literary achievement, they were not features particularly prized by earlier American audiences, Claudia Stokes contends. On the contrary, readers were taught to value familiarity, traditionalism, and regularity. Literary originality was often seen as a mark of vulgar sensationalism and poor quality.In Old Style Stokes offers the first dedicated study of a forgotten nineteenth-century aesthetic, explicating the forms, practices, conventions, and uses of unoriginality. She focuses in particular on the second quarter of the century, when improvements in printing and distribution caused literary markets to become flooded with new material, and longstanding reading practices came under threat. As readers began to prefer novelty to traditional forms, advocates openly extolled unoriginality in an effort to preserve the old literary ways. Old Style examines this era of significant literary change, during which a once-dominant aesthetic started to give way to modern preferences.If writing in the old style came to be associated with elite conservatism—a linkage that contributed to its decline in the twentieth century—it also, paradoxically provided marginalized writers—people of color, white women, and members of the working class—the literary credentials they needed to enter print. Writing in the old style could affirm an aspiring author's training, command of convention, and respectability. In dismissing unoriginality as the literary purview of the untalented or unambitious, Stokes cautions, we risk overlooking something of vital importance to generations of American writers and readers

    "Novelists Against Social Change shows how the writing of the best-selling novelists John Buchan, Dornford Yates and Angela Thirkell expressed their conservative fears and anxieties by politicizing their fiction and characters, from 1920 to 1960. Buchan's focus on national and European politics of the 1920s and 30s was embedded in his trademark adventure fiction for Establishment heroes. Yates's stylistic exuberance decorated his fierce defence of retrogressive social codes with an almost modernist attention to language. Angela Thirkell's Barsetshire social comedies were an elegy to Victorian values and a passionate defence of upper-class civilization as she conceived it. Resisting the threat of change in social class, political action, the freedom of women, and professionalization produced some of their strongest works. This book pays particular attention to Buchan's novels Huntingtower, Castle Gay and A Prince of the Captivity, to Yates's 'Berry' novels and short stories and his thrillers, and Thirkell's wartime and postwar fiction.     Bryan M. Santin examines over a half-century of intersection between American fiction and postwar conservatism. He traces the shifting racial politics of movement conservatism to argue that contemporary perceptions of literary form and aesthetic value are intrinsically connected to the rise of the American Right. Instead of casting postwar conservatives as cynical hustlers or ideological fanatics, Santin shows how the long-term rhetorical shift in conservative notions of literary value and prestige reveal an aesthetic antinomy between high culture and low culture. This shift, he argues, registered and mediated the deeper foundational antinomy structuring postwar conservatism itself: the stable social order of traditionalism and the creative destruction of free-market capitalism. Postwar conservatives produced, in effect, an ambivalent double register in the discourse of conservative literary taste that sought to celebrate neo-aristocratic manifestations of cultural capital while condemning newer, more progressive manifestations revolving around racial and ethnic diversity
